    So cool that you continue to make quality shit and don’t get discouraged by low view count. You’ll day will come soon. As of now this is a hidden gem of a channel but soon you’ll be a synth authority like sonic state. I feel if you do more reviews and videos like these you’ll get more views. Keep doing what ur doing

    I am, really proud of you for digging into a synth to create a sound. It is the most satisfying experience ever! When you really learn a synth is like learning a computer language... literally!!! And then you start to experiment and create crazy sounds and you create your own sound. =)

    I was having trouble finding all the different parameters inside the D-05 menus. I kept going around in circles.
    Thanks for this video! It really helped!
    I know where everything is now.
    I'm still thinking of making a flow chart though. It's easy to get lost in all those menus.

    Great tutorial! Thanks for pushing for the four letter word "RTFM" which is almost a lost art form these days. Lazy people don't RTFM, lazy and smart people do and understand so much more and save so much headache and get so much more out of the rest of their lives just from a few hours of RTFMing :D

    real talk bro: i liked how you talked about the guts of this instrument. i've had the d-05 for over a month and have not gone into that part of it. i have been re-living the early 90s and playing all the songs i loved back then that used this instrument. i agree the parameter guid is worth the time to read. the synth is actually very easy to program!

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  7 лет назад

      Thanks Marctronixx, really am glad that this video is effective. I agree that once the menu hierarchy is gone through a handful of times it's not too bad at all to program, at least for someone who has a general understanding of subtractive synthesis anyway. But yeah is alright, I owned a real D-50 not too long ago and I never got into it and I always felt bad, so when I scooped the D-05 up I really wanted to dig into it. I did check out your vid using the Apple PG-8000 emulation, that looks pretty sweet!

    The "lever" in the manual refers to the little lever the D-50 had instead of your usual pitch and modulation wheels.
    Bend left -> pitch goes down, bend right -> pitch goes up and push lever -> modulation increases.
    Personal taste maybe but I had no problem with it and sometimes it's better than standard Moog configuration.
    The only downside is you can't leave the modulation halfway because it's spring loaded so it goes back to zero when you let go.
    The joystick lets you also adjust two parameters at the same time if they're on the same screen like filter frequency and filter resonance. Having that in a joystick totally ROXX compared to just have to do them one at a time . Hit the button named [edit] to the right of the joystick to change the mode. When you edit you can either chose to edit one parameter [value] or two parameters [local] at a time. You can also set the balance between the upper and lower tones either live as performance stunt or while editing and it's again much better than do it one at a time with inc/dec buttons ...
    That's all fine and dandy BUT ... do yourself a favor now and thank yourself later and download the free and absolutely magnificent D50 Librarian program and get everything you can think of inside your D synth on screen and everything will revealed to you!!! And you can also do librarian stuff, export text list of sounds, import/export SysEx file and move presets between D50 and D05 and more things than you can shake a stick at. So what are you waiting for? Do it! Now!!! It's and order!!!!!
    And I mean it!!!!!!!!!!! :D

    Weird little fact that many don't know is that some of the MC Grooveboxes had some of the same edits like TVA and TVF in patch building with 4 tones. That along with the sounds, drums and samples you could do a lot.

      yeah the MC-909 was actually a beast it had a similar engine to the XV-5080. But it had a glitchy operating system that would occasionally lose your saved work.

    • @Hhyperspace
      @Hhyperspace 7 лет назад +1

      Heathcliff haha yeah. There was always something up with the Grooveboxes that just didn't help at all. I think they should think about revamping them in the Aira series. A groovebox with the System 1 engine, some quality PCMs and the D-05 reverbs and delays would be the sh!t.

    For anyone with little money but an interest in this synth
    =====
    Just ordered a D110 module - cheapsssszzz. We'll see how easy it is to programme, but it seems it comes pretty close to the D50 - main things it lacks are chorus and EQ, and 1 LFO instead of three. It has 8 outs though so you can always send each voice through a chorus pedal and a tremolo pedal to compensate for lack of LFO for amplitude. The only thing you're missing then is the LFO routed for PWM and for Filter modulation. Not too shabby! The screen is tiny though, so you might want to edit it with a computer.

    great video! i followed your suggestion and downloaded (and donated) to the D50 Librarian. Do you feel it is easier to make custom patches via the software or through the synth itself? I've been trying to make a custom patch to sound like Van Halen's "1984" intro...without success. lol

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  7 лет назад

      alexxx101 that's great! I do like the D50 librarian better for realtime sound design for sure, there is far less menus diving and setting things like LFOs and Envelopes is much easier with the software! Good luck with making the "Jump" synth sound let me know if you are able to achieve it on the D05!

    Okay, possibly a stupid question but i’m gonna ask it anyway, the user sounds in d05, are they initialized patches? I’m asking because I’ve been looking to buy a specific boutique synth that can let me create custom sounds without the fear of overwriting factory presets

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  Год назад +1

      The user banks are duplicates of the factory presets. The factory banks you cannot over write, but the user banks can be edited and saved. It's been a while, but I think there's a few banks with all init patches if you don't want to over write any of the user patches that are duplicates of the factory patches.

    Hey, fantastic walkthrough!
    One question, -Maybe I’m missing it when I Edit my sounds, but where does one adjust parameters like ”attack/decay/sustain/release”?

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks! That is actually a good question. In the D-05 (D-50 /D-55) to edit parameters like the ADSR is a bit confusing. Roland called this the Time Variant Amplifier Envelope. To access it using the front panel navigate to:
      EDIT>
      RIGHT ARROW>
      Select the tone, either upper or lower>
      RIGHT ARROW>
      Select Part 1 or 2>
      RIGHTARROW>
      Select TVA>
      Hit RIGHT ARROW twice to see the TVA ENV, adjust the T values to your hearts content :)
      There is a diagram on the front of the synth to show you the envelope slopes. Hope that is helpful!

      Marshal Arnold Thanks for the help! Much appreciated! Gonna sit down and try it out this weekend! The D-05 sounds fantastic and has a really unique character but has some serious menu-diving when crafting your sounds! Thanks again for the reply! :)

    • @MarshalArnold

      Skydds Rum my pleasure! Yeah, lots of menus in these, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. There is an editor called the D50 librarian which if I remember correctly you can do some programming with it using a much more user-friendly UI I'll get you a link to that here shortly it's a free tool on works really well.

    Question: I see you can load SysEx Patches onto the Korg Volca FM via DEXED vst....Is it possible to load a sound coming from the DEXED library into the Roland D-05.
    I am wondering if the patches used by the DX7 and by the D50 back in the days are the same....do they share the same language?

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  4 года назад +1

      As cool as that would be it's not possible. The D50/D05 and DX7 are totally different with their forms of synthesis and architecture so patches made for one will not work on the other.

    I can't figure out how to save my patches. Whenever I hit the Write key I always get the message "Int Memory Protected". There is no explanation for that message in the parameter guide and I'm still waiting to hear back from Roland.

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  6 лет назад +3

      Ah yeah, sounds like you have write protect turned on maybe. To disable that try the following steps:
      Press the FUNCTION key
      Select (Func)
      Under Protect if it says ON hit the F2 button below the screen and the ON letters will pulse
      Press the Decrement button - ON should now show as OFF
      Press the F2 button to save the change.
      After that make sure you are editing patches from the User preset banks. The way to tell is that if there is a P in the upper left hand corner of the screen it means you are in a factory preset bank, those to my understanding cannot be changed. To navigate to a user preset bank do the following:
      Press the PRESET/USER button
      Use the Increment/Decrement buttons to scroll through the preset banks. P1-P6 are the factory presets, U1-U7 are the user banks. Navigate to one of the U banks
      Select a button from the flashing PRESET NUMBER section
      Now try to make a parch and save it, should be golden :)
      Hope that helps.

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  5 лет назад +1

      The D-05 and the D-50 are not multitimbral so unfortunately there isn't a way to have more than one patch active at a time, but you can split the upper and lower tones so you can create splits within a patch. This was an unfortunate limitation of the D-50 and was the primary reason why the Korg M1 became more popular when it arrived on the scene. The D-05 is an exact recreation of the D-50 so it has the same limitations. That said, the Roland Cloud is the best way to get multitimbrality from the D-50 by using multiple instances of the D-50 plugin within a DAW. Hope that helps!
