    Alternatively... You know what's a lot easier to memorize than the twelve letter long tomatoflames acronym? "91.205," the regulation this list comes from. Many examiners will ask about required equipment, the student will work all the way through the acronym, and then the examiner will follow up with, "Great. Now, where does this information come from?" Too often, the student is dumbstruck, because they have no idea where to find the regulation. In the Denver area, at least, this is where a lot of oral exam failures occur. Instead of straining yourself to develop rote memory techniques, please learn how to use your resources. 91.205 - Required Equipment and 91.213 Inoperative Equipment are your best friends for any checkride.

      @@AirplaneAcademy Thanks for the reply. We have a DPE around here who always asks students to explain where the tomatoflames list comes from. If the student gives him a blank stare, he knows they've been memorizing information without comprehending it. They can save themselves a lot of trouble by having a sticky note in the FAR/AIM. I made it through private, commercial, and CFI without ever reciting that terrifying acronym.

      @@valblome4913 my checkride is next Friday and I was advised by my CFI not to worry about memorizing the list but to memorize 91.213 (the reg, not the content so much) and be able to flow from there to 91.205 if need be.

    • @Mysteroo
      @Mysteroo Год назад

      Isn't the contents of 91.205 way longer? Or do they not require you to know its contents if you know where to find it?

    • @valblome4913
      @valblome4913 Год назад

      @@Mysteroo Since pilot certifications don't expire, the examiner tries to determine if the applicant has the skills to remain a safe and smart pilot for the next 20 years. The reality is that after enough time, that pilot probably isn't going to remember those acronyms or the exact regulation. But they'll be able to navigate the regulations to get where they need to be. So usually cracking open the book is an acceptable answer.

    Thanks. Working on CFI. Trying to memorize is like playing whac-a-mole. Just as I get some list memorized, I forget something I had previously learned.

    You see the WHOLE POINT of mnemonics is for a person to relate lol when they made tomato flames lol it's not related up to the person who made it smh acronyms are supposed to relate to the person. Lol so this makes alot more sense

  • @zz3709

    The problem with memory aids like this is remembering which acronym to use for what. *Understanding* the reason why I need which one takes longer, but I remember it 20 years later.

  • @johnvalentine265
    @johnvalentine265 3 года назад

    OK, I can see an application for this for some things, but how can you apply it to a number, say 85 for example?

    • @AirplaneAcademy
      @AirplaneAcademy  3 года назад

      Hi John - good question. In the book "Moonwalking with Einstein" that I referenced, the memory champions often develop memory mechanisms for numbers themselves. When they have to memorize a deck of cards in a few minutes, they assign certain things to numbers and suits. So "moonwalking" might have been the number 7, and "einstein" could have been the suit of clubs. So the 7 of clubs is now imagery of einstein moonwalking. Basically anything that needs memorization and is hard to associate with something to memorize naturally, they would associate imagery with it to make it easier. Awesome book if you're at all interested.

    Instead of considering memory short cuts, cheating or hacks, I strongly recommend reading and FULLY understanding the meanings of the acronym TOMATOFLAMES. I can guarantee when you do, you will have no problem remembering it for a test.
