British museum agrees to return stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

- A museum in London has decided to return a collection of treasures stolen in the 19th century to Nigeria.
The items, including the famous Benin Bronzes, were taken as European powers scrambled for colonial domination of Africa in the 19th century.
But as Western museums start to reckon with their colonial past, many are choosing to give back what is not rightfully theirs.
Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from London.

Also for drawing arbitrary borders all over the continent and dividing peoples and cultures and lumping together other peoples that don't want to be lumped together. These arbitrary borders have been the source of many conflicts in Africa, European former colonizers need to apologize and pay reparations for these long term damaging effects.

Why? Those countries were colonies. Meaning they were occupied by foreign forces laying claim to the country being conquered.
They should give the Benin bronzes to the African Americans so that they can return them to the current Benin King.
It would be ironic to see them give back these objects to the ancestors of those who enslaved their ancestors, considering the metal in these objects was the very price paid for their ancestors' enslavement.

The brass in the statues came from bracelets made by the Portuguese used to trade with black slave traders for black slaves. Slavery continued in Benin long after slavery had been abolished in Britain (the first country in the world to outlaw slavery). Britain was trying to end slavery in Benin, as well as the awful practise of human sacrifice, when it’s trade delegation to Benin were slaughtered. That’s why Britain responded by invading. Britain is why there is no slave trade there now. No human sacrifice. And we left a large modern city in its place when we left 60 years ago.

Couldn't an agreement be reached to loan some artifacts to museums around the world (perhaps for a fee) so that people in the UK, America, Europe, etc., may learn about the history and cultures of Africa? Same for Native American artifacts.
