    I decided to try making a Lazy Susan for our kitchen. It's a quick and fun project -- you just need to glue up some boards and cut them in circles. The trick(?) is to excavate a spot in one of the boards to hide the ball bearing mechanism that allows the board to spin. There's a bit more to it than that, which is detailed in the build article.
    Dimensions: Top is 16" diameter, Bottom is 11" diameter. Thickness of each piece is 3/4".

    For you information “Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan in the 18th century, though they were referred to as dumbwaiters at that time. It is said that Jefferson invented the lazy Susan because his daughter complained she was always served last at the table and, as a result, never found herself full when leaving the table.

    What type of router do you use for digging out the circular section that the lazy Susan hardware sits in?
    I don’t understand the difference between a fixed, plunge and hand router.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      I'm using a Bosch Colt, which is a palm router -- which is just a smaller router.
      It is a fixed base router.
      A plunge router has mechanisms to raise and lower the bit WHILE you cut. With a fixed base router you need to adjust the depth of cut before you turn the router on.

    • @asherstein2770
      @asherstein2770 4 года назад

      Would you suggest a plunge router over a fixed base router?
      I thought fixed base routers weren’t adjustable and were dependent on the length of the router bits that you have?

    I might have missed it. How did you center the 2 pieces in both X- and Y- directions with only 2 access holes on the bottom piece? I can seen how it can be centered if there are 4 access holes. The reason I ask is the lazy susan I have only has 1 access hole built in. I can't see how I would center the 2 pieces. Perhaps, line up the Xs on the 2 pieces? I don't see how you would have done it when you had already sanded away the X you had marked on the wood in the beginning. Thanks!

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  3 года назад

      Yep, you missed it. The screw holes were pre-drilled earlier in the process. When mounting it, you just need to re-find the already drilled holes.

    Quick question, should stain go on before shellac right? If shellac will seal the stain will have to go on first right?

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  4 года назад

      I don't apply stain to cherry, as I prefer to let it age naturally. This article I found talks about using shellac first as a grain sealer - though I might use actual "wood conditioner" instead of shellac: www.familyhandyman.com/woodworking/staining-wood/how-to-stain-wood-evenly-without-getting-blotches-and-dark-spots/

    Very nice countersinking the bearings! 👍
    BTW, which drill is that 7:20? Looks very compact and light weight.

      It is a Ridgid 12v, and you are right, it is lovely and compact and light. you can browse them here, amzn.to/2aqt0u4 -- but Home Depot is the place to find them.
      They appear to be very similar to the Milwaukee m12 compact drills, but I have no direct experience with those.

    Great tutorial! No need to apologise, though - apparently Thomas Jefferson’s daughter Susan was a bit lazy at the table so they invented this as a dumbwaiter for her. Nice little nod to Johnny Cash there at the end (a boy named sue) ;)

    Growing up with a friend name Susan who was offended by those words Lazy Susan. I told her it's actually Sussy. Meaning 'Server'. It's actually called Lazy Sussy. It was invented in Europe like the 'Dumb Waiter'. Later in time, at my wedding, she did her part to toast to me and my husband. She told the story of me explaining to her about Lazy Susan. Then she concluded the story with, "She did everything she could to put me at ease. I just didn't have the heart to tell her I knew she was full of s**t" 😂 Thanks for the DIY! I'm making her a birthday present!!!! LOL!!!

    Nice work, I don't know why it's called this there are quite a few stories when looking it up but this one seems to blame it on marketing
    “It is more than likely that ‘Lazy Susan’ was styled on previous
    combinations in English that use ‘Susan’ (‘black-eyed Susan’ being the
    most common). There are many such words in English that use names in
    thus generic way - for example ‘Peeping Tom’, ‘Jim-Dandy’ and ‘Jolly
    Roger’ are just a few. It is also possible that the combination of the
    ‘z’ sound in ‘lazy’ and the initial ‘s’ sound of ‘Susan’ appealed to the
    manufacturer of the Lazy Susan, and in a brilliant Marketing move, the
    ‘Lazy Susan’ was born.”

    Hi Art...i noticed on this video, you r using 12volt Ridgid drill, is it noisy??? , my 18 volt Ridgid is way louder than Ryobi-Makita-Milwaukee (Thee other big 3 brands in Home Depot).

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  5 лет назад

      I don't find it to be noisy at all. I originally bought 12v drills for my shop for their compact size -- in a hobbyist workshop I don't think there is any need for the long run time of a huge 18v battery. They do have a bit less power, so an 18v is still handy on occasion.

    i have a hard time getting past 4-5 coats of wipe on poly , too much time , so i cut that wipe on poly with mineral spirits 50/50 . then it dries in 1 hour vs 4-6 hours. last coat i always put on full strength . then finish with steel wool and mineral oil mixed with beeswax mix then i buff that shit , turns out real nice , i like this project i was thinking about making one a few months back saw one on IG/// is that maple or cherry . looks like you milled it yourself? , but you answered my question at the end of the vid

    My question is how many inches of "reveal" do I need to hide the base? In other words how much smaller diameter should the base be than the top and still be stable? Also what size bearing in relation to the base? How deep a recess works for you? Thanks! These questions are really hard to find so far. Great video otherwise.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  2 года назад

      There was no magic formula for reveal, just what seemed to work. The restriction may end up being the bearing. It's been a few years, but I recal that finding different sizes of bearings was a challenge. And again, the depth of the recess depends on the thickness of the top. half of a 3/4" thick top is about the most I'd excavate.
      Sounds to me like you should just dive in and experiment!

    Lazy Susan name: Is a revolving table that was first used in 13th century China, the same idea was taken by Thomas Edison (some others say Jefferson) that have a daughter that complained about being served last, leaving her craving more...so I guess that the servant place the plate and turn the table to her...Have to say that in the 18th century, England; the name means dumb waitress...what ever!
