Starter as contingent électrician in 1978 assigned to the Duquesne. I enlisted as ASW technicien in 1981 and two times assigned to the Duquesne for the implementation, maintenance of towed sonar ,torpedo room and Malafon system.

Those are UYA-4 NTDS Consoles in CIC. They were early models as they still have the manual numeric dial on the bull nose which were later replaced by a key pad. Spent many years operating them from 77 to 97 in the US Navy.
I served as a radar operator in the US Navy in the 80s so some of the equipment in the Combat Information Center actually looked somewhat familiar. Thanks for this.

Actually the ship is desarmed but the military base next to it is the french navy diving school. The ship helps to break the wave in front of the school.
They also use it to train their underwater welding skills.

I lived in Le Brusc for two years as a child, used to love looking at all the navy ships across the water when we went by there. Lovely part of the world

Oh man, I worked a couple of months on the FLM DUQUESNE in 1990, 1991 when I was in the Navy. It's so weird to see her desarmed and retired.

Just that short section from 29:01 to 29:10 that shows the wiring and piping, thinking how much of that is prevalent through the rest of the ship is wild.
It’s no wonder that new ship programs end up taking so long to work out the bugs in all of the systems and sub-systems. Quite the feat of engineering and packaging.
Can’t think of anything scarier than being below deck while under enemy fire. You would be stuck in there. Absolute hell.
Getting anything to work on this ship would not be easy, however would be rather entertaining.
Running it by yourself wouldn't be possible.

Definitely one of the better ship URBEX's where the people actually had a working clue as to what they're looking at, and film quality is excellent!! Good job gents!!

I explored the exUSS John Paul Jones DDG-32 when she was moored at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1992. It was too damn cool wandering around her and seeing the shell damage from where she had been shot at with 5" guns.

Abandoned ships always look amazing! I'd love to explore one... one day! All the abandoned ships we have in Australia seem to be underwater.
They use them as a target to practice?
Occasionally they will want to see if their $5,000,000 torpedo work but usually it’s cheaper to just sink them offshore in order to create artificial reefs for marine life and divers.
Exploring the Unbeaten Path Yeah, a lot are sunk to be man-made reefs... not sure about torpedo practice!
If you ever go by adelaide. check out garden island shipwreck graveyard, ships are by no means in one piece at all and are damn ancient by this point. but they aint underwater.. *yet*

Thank you so much for this excellent trip to a somewhat rare ship. I guess life wasn't easy on this one but that's the thing on all old warships. The construction of the massiv radom looks really interesting. I also like the artwork and stickers in some areas giving the ship a personal note.
I just want to add some information on that one:
The areas where you can find these floor plans are usually battle stations for the inner battle (fire, water, injured people). There is one guy on the radio and usually several Sergeants who control a huge group of sailors. The guy with the radio receives the orders and forwards them to the Sergeants. They order the sailors to take action against fire, water and so on. Everything which happens during the battle to the ship is "plottet" on the floor plan usually with the time discovered and with the time when the problem was solved.
The area where you found the post card is, I am assuming, part of the "Umformerraum" (don't know the english word). There the energy from the engines is transferred to electric power since especially the electronic systems of a warship need an enormous amount of power.

Great Explore Guys . Thanks . I always find it Amazing when exploring old Ships . The basic ship will stay the same for it's lifetime . However tech advances faster . So you can see things that are old and things that are newer on these . Added or replaced during refit . Mainly Weapons , Radar and other Electronics . Very Cool . Stay Safe Gang .

Very nice, it is fun exploring. This video does give me an appreciation for restored museum ships like the USS Hornet, in Alameda CA with lighting, placards explaining stuff, well informed docents, and not having to wade through environmental hazards nor having to check for oxygen levels. :)
29:03 the yellow box is actually a mailbox, with the old logo of the french postal service.
Ok , I gotta ask . Does anyone know why there is tape on all the radar and sensor screens ? Is it to keep the glass from splitting or something??
@ian cotcher Not even close. The tape is installed haphazardly, it is brown and thus covers up part of the information on the screens, and does not cover enough area to prevent the glass from injurying people. Really does not serve a purpose on an active warship.
It's calibrated and ready for use, or it's no good and marked for deletion.
I assume when workers are removing gear during decommissioning, this is a way to mark that work on a console is finished.
As partykristian said, it denotes that all important/potentially classified information has been removed/destroyed.

@ 11:20 You can control the speed per shaft because it probable had a cruise CODAG (Combined Diesel And Gasturbine) setup per shaft. So you can set a configuration for transit with cruise diesels and if you need to sail fast you can have gas turbines, all connected with a big gear box. Furthermore you can "push" the ship to port or starboard, pending on how much thrust you give at one shaft.
@12:20 the big box with the glassplate is a plotting table (I have worked with a similar model). You would draw a lat/long chart and you could plot ship/submarine positions on it. As all the other equipment, it is rather old stuff from the 80's :)
@ 12:55 This is a "Duty Table", if you sail in a group of ships, several ships will have designated duties. Like the major air defender will get dutie 20 (AAWC = Anti Air Warfare Commander) the ship needs to have a back up companion in case it will get destroyed, hence the P (primary) and S (secondary). This ship would not have all the duties that are on that board, that would be crazy xD
@ 14:50 My best guess is that is the radio room. The most secret devices that would stand there would be the crypto devices to secure transmission, those are the devices that are taken out.

@ 23:01 Those "plotting boards" are mostly situated at deignated area's where a lot of battle damage material is in the vicinity. If there is a battle damage or another severe damage, these area's would be manned with personnel to atack fires, stopping inflowing water and restore broken equipment. Also teams wich will recover wounded personell and bring them to the sickbay.
@ 28:11 I also think this is the "clutch" this cogs will couple either the gas turbines or the diesel engines to the shaft.
@ 29:48 It is defenitly in the generator room, however I think this is a fire pump, it will pump up seawater to pressurize the fire fighting system :)
@ 30:15 These seem to be the generators (looking a little bit small :D)
@31:14 these are possibly the switch boards for the ships electricity

I'm not certain permission is a huge factor at all. Most of these places are no longer considered important enough to be under strict guard (hence abandonment, hence no one really gives a damn about trespassers). It is usually quite clear that they are far from the first visitors to these locations. They attempt to make their excursions, while still cool, far more dramatic than they actually are (but of course)
A french youtuber (Mamytwink) got his video put down by the french navy for doing an urbex explore in a similar ex-military boat. He did not have the permission of course and came across some classified documents inside the ship wich lead to an investigation by the authorities...
I believe that it is very unlikely to get permission to explore such boats and that they are still garded and under control of the french navy.

the red tape will be that because there may be secrets on board, and also they don't get anything out of letting you explore it... it'd cost them too much money to certify it's safety
Only some countries criminalise trespass, although this is usually the case in some military bases. But even then, theyre generally not going to be interested retrospectivley when they can see no wrong has been done

Good of you guys having a oxygen meter with you. Those confined places can be deprived of oxygen. This happens when iron is rusting away, this reaction uses oxygen.
You can not tell the difference by smell or taste.

Great video, thank you for this. I love to see military machinery that was active right at the end of analog before the technology went digital. The amount and complexity of the wiring is mind boggling. I was hoping to see the main engines, not sure if they are fossil fuel reactors or turbines. Thanks again.

There are some real wacky dials on that ship, I thought that sign with the ring finger getting sliced off was really creepy!!
That's actually a safety poster. According to google, the legend, "pris avec la bague au doigt," translates to, "caught with the ring on your finger." The graphic isn't a the finger being sliced off. It's been pulled off. The poster is a reminder to the crew to remove rings and other items like necklaces and bracelets before entering machinery spaces or servicing equipment.
@@respectbossmon I was an MM1, I refused to let any of my guys or girls wear any jewelry in my engine room. Got a lot of push back but my chief and officers always backed me up. You can be angry at me but at least you have a finger to put that ring on.
