For sure. If you aren't in tears after this scene, thereis something not clciking. I remember seeing this film in Toronto when it came out and in the funny parts the whole cinema was laughing but a scene like this is very emotionally powerful. When he says "merry Christmas John" I lost it. Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon were superb in this.
2:38 such beautiful piece of music it brings tears to my eyes every time. The scene between John & Ariel holding hands looking at each other lovingly gets me every time too.
I first saw this in high school. A scene like that hits you when you see it 25 years later because you understand it more later in life after you witness losing your family and going through the things in life that are harsh. This is WHY you take care of family and should be there for each other.
I remember going with my grandma to see this in the theaters even back then I could appreciate the all star team of talent Lemmon , Matthau especially I think he was the real star of these films
I think when Walter is holding back his tears to say “friend” is the true golden moment. It’s not just this movie but their career in hollywood together that this feels to encompass.
I was 12 years old when this movie came out and I didn't realize how important the friend or family scene was. Now in my 40s I wish I had someone like Max in my life.
Nearly 30 years later I still get choked up watching Walter Matthau come to the realization of who he truly is to Lenmon’s character….. “friend.” That one word acted out so perfectly always leaves me a little feeling a little emotional and speechless.
I would not be imagine if that wasn't me and that situation having a heart attack. Before the holidays. But at the end in this scene where Max knows he cares about his best friend. All it matters is to keep his friend Happy what what is the true love of friendship That forged a bond. But this movie was a good movie tells us about life friendship and family we all have to care for each other throughout all of our life
Well, first he had to contend with the fact that Maria was condemning his favorite Fishing spot since he was 5 years old, so she could build her ristorante.
To me, they had known each other for so long they were not friends, they were family. I always thought when he hesitates its because he fears the nurse won't tell him anything if he says friend.
For America to exist, we need Republicans and Democrats to co-exist, for the good of the country...for your neighbor. That is what it means to be an American to me...
Let’s be honest: grown men were brought to tears by this
Absolutely
This hits very different knowing that they’re no longer with us. Easily one of the best duos on screen.
How does dude not win an Oscar for how he says “friend.”
Fuck that’s powerful shit
yep .such a humbling moment which Walter matthau conveyed flawlessly

I lose it every time
Powerful moment with the realization that the person he a decades long feud with was truly his best friend
So many confuse bantering between two close friends to mean feud.
The way he says friend, kills me 😔

Damn right

Well said. 💯
Max has a heart of gold yelling for someone to call an ambulance then. Going to see him in the hospital that is not only loyalty but true friendship
What a wonderful cast and acting. It gets me every time.
Best film ever made.
You could see the sadness in his eyes when he said Merry Christmas.

This is what you call acting ❤😢
Preach !

This just goes to show you that even through their silly little feud they still care for each other
The hospital scene I forgot I was watching a movie and thought I was watching real life event. Beautiful acting. Absolutely legendary
Walter can make you laugh and cry and even hate him. Dude is so powerful
Yes he was able to make you feel many different feelings at the same time
Nearly 30 years later I still get choked up watching Walter Matthau come to the realization of who he truly is to Lenmon’s character….. “friend.” That one word acted out so perfectly always leaves me a little feeling a little emotional and speechless.
You could tell Max was upset that John was going through this.
This is where Max and John finally buried the hatchet, and ended their decades long feud.
Life sure is too short..
Life’s too short to be bearing grudges.
@@Agent-cz9rjThat's a wise lesson. I need to remind myself of that more often
You know if life has taught me anything it's that crisis tends to have a way of bringing people together
To me, their feud was indeed their whole friendship, they both just had too much pride to admit they actually like one another.

When he says “friend” it breaks me every time.
Same here. The other thing that break me every time is when Max and Jacob saved John's home by paying off his debt he owed to the IRS.
I still cry at this scene
Ariel is John’s Angel she made him happy again.
Second chance at love again.
this scene broke me wow
As funny as this movie was it had heart. It played with emotions and it done a damn good job. They can’t make movies of this caliber anymore.
At 1.14 my eyes start misting up!
Walter Matthau was such a great actor, he really sold that scene, it's one of the best in the movie. Gets me every time too.
I felt bad for Max, but little did he know that the beautiful, exotic Sophia Loren was on the horizon.
