I purchased this one just when it was released, I had it plugged to my living room TV to sample obscure TV movies on sundays afternoons.
Roland, if you're reading this, we need a 202 MFX on the 404 MK that emulates the different sample grades and possibly the filters as well. Please make it happen!
Dude I agree 100% with you. I feel like when Roland took over BOSS, we lost the best sample grades. Who knows if they could even reproduce it the same way. Still love my OG404 and 303 but almost everything gets filtered thru the 202
100% One of the best machines for lofi and vaporwave. Great to see you’re still giving it the love it deserves !!
Just picked one up in great shape with a memory card, and it brought me to your channel. Thanks for the playlist, cheers!
The MS-1 was my first ever sampler back when I was just out of high school. I wish I'd kept it.
Its a great little device. I love the crappy looper on it!
Having a 4MB smart media card added a lot when I owned one. I bought it as soon as they dropped and sold it about 8 years ago. I used it for DJ sets and all sorts of projects while I had it. 😎
I agree, a 4mb card is worth it if you can find one for a reasonable price. The main use for it IMO is recording an entire beat to a pad
Using the midi in with the 202 is actually quite fun! You can make some surprisingly complex arrangements doing that.
Definitely need to try that yeah!
I can't imagine doing any serious production on it in the present day, but it definitely stands out as an effects box. It just has a color you aren't going to get exactly anywhere else.
100% - I only use it for sample treatment
The SP 202 paired with a modern sampler is heaven. The new stuff lacks the character and punch, the old lack the sophisticated technology and speed. Perfect pair 💪🏾
As long as you can use a sequencer on any other machine or even on computer, the 202 serves as a holy grail within all my shits I have
Magical box
🪄 👍
SP-202 gang rise up! 🤌🏻
P.S. Lofi1 is definitely the best sample grade, glad you're enjoying it!
Glad to get back into it! Great device
It was meant to be paired with the DR 202. That is where the midi comes in. Will always love it for pitch and lofi1.
@@I.O.M.the pitch is so gd good
Right here baby 🤘
SP Gang here!
💪🏾 202, 606, 404A, 404MK2
That was my first sampler🤘(bought it back in the 90’s)that thing was/is a beast! Really just a one trick pony at this point but it does that trick really well!
I was looking at an SP404a to finish off my Aira collection... but, was made aware of the pitch on the SP202 and I changed direction. Literally took delivery of my SP202 yesterday and spent a whole afternoon and evening messing about with it. It is so simple to use and while it can be frustrating getting the samples cut just right, it is a lot of fun to play with. I don't know how much I will use it, I have some really nice EMU ESI samplers, but it is so easy to fire up and use the SP202, while the EMU's are more of an effort.
the 202 is great for sample processing and nothing much else IMO. I look at it like a guitar pedal. I don't even attempt to find start and end points, I'll just get the goodness out of it and then move it to another piece of gear for further processing!
I think it's the best looking SP in my opinion
still my main machine! I love it so much
That’s dope! Hoping to use it more again now 🙌
My favorite sampler to play with I like it so much I want to buy another one just in case lol
Standard mode for drumloops and lofi 1 for melodic samples.. 💪🏻
Sounds about right man!
The DR and SP are an invincible duo.
The 202 warmth is amazing fam! I had the 303 but never the 202, and been on Reverb and Ebay searching for a good price lol! Great video my friend!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Fingers crossed one comes up for you man! 🙏
Really glad the algorithm brought me here.
🙏🙏🙏
Nice video man!
Thanks bro!
Love mine!
Man I just sold mine in great shape. It's the 2nd time I buy it at a reasonable price. I sold it and immediately regret it and I never used it more than a few hours.
Its always tough to know how you are going to feel once the gear is gone
I'm keeping mine 😼 I'm lucky to have the smart media card which I tracked down sometime later. A good friend of mine is fixing the Dr.202 for me .🍻 Excuse me for being dopey, but how does the drum machine and this device work together ?
The thing I love about this sampler ( my first ) , is that it is so easy to use. Playing bass in bands back in the day , I didn't understand " keyboard stuff" . I saw people with rack samplers ( akai ) which looked complicated. This is direct , and fun. I just have to start using the sp404sx , or sell that and get another one of these 😼

The problem with the SP-202 is that it is basically half a device. There is a video somewhere on youtube discussing how it's counterpart the Dr. Groove was always meant to be plugged directly into it. That brings it closer to the 303, but still a bit away.
Also, the pads on the 202 are lovely. I love how they had not figured out pads yet, and have the oddball behaviour of being able to stop the note length by pressing them again. Awful for finger drumming, but you can make some really interesting effects that way that would be trickier in gate mode.
Yeah, the pads on the 303 were perfect. The pads on the 202 aren't as responsive IMO. It makes getting an accurate loop using the Mark button a bit challenging
love your videos man, the 202 is magical
also can i ask a question about the sx? if i wanted to connect my mpc live ii to the sp404sx what cables would i need? got the sp because of your videos :)
You need a double 3/4” jack at one end and phono at the other. I’ve got loads of them 👍
Are there any other stand alone sampler devices that affects the pitch like the 202??
Roland/Boss knocked it out the park!
I'm enough of a sucker to buy some kind of weird 202 reissue with sd support, longer sample time, a faster processor for saving edits, and virtually no other improvements. Same sound , effects, and layout. Maybe a usb-c port and a battery option. I'd love that shit. Like an sp202 deluxe reissue, kinda like how Capcom puts out so many ports of street fighter 2 but with minor modern conveniences.
Same man! A lot of people have said they'd be interested in rebooted SP legacy models
Sequence it with the Circuit Rhythm
Yeah defo need to hook it up to something. CR would be dope! 👊
I have been looking everywhere to see if I could run a drum machine through the sp and use its low pass filter. Thankyou seriously. How would I utilize the function?
1st sampler I ever used, borrowed it from a friend.. 😂
Get a lot of stories about 202s! 😃👍
I own this, the SP505 & 404og, an Akai S20 & Zoom ST 224. I get around not having the 2-4 mb 5.5volt cards by backing up to the S20 on floppys. A bit time consuming, but the S20 can downgrade & pitch it further if I want to somehow re-sample BACK into the 202. Thinking of getting a Yamaha SU10 & a Korg ES-1. Also buying a Sonicware LoFi 6. I can try to sequence the 202 from that. I have a MS-1 but I forgot where I misplaced it.
Always wanted a Yamaha SU10 myself as well!
You just noticed that about it telling you what grade you sampled onto the pad lol
😬🤣
just upgraded to the sp404 mk2 and one of the main things i love about it is the pitch. i HATED it on the SX. Actually impressed with how pitch sounds on 202 it may be better than the sx in my opinion
Agreed - The SX/A was garbage for repitching stuff!
🖤
I've looked at a 202 a couple of times but can't really justify it as I already have a have a Zoom Sampletrack and an MS1. Does have a cool sound though
Yeah you’re probably covered there man!
Nitty gritty 202
Only thing the 202 is missing is a sequencer
This might sound weird, but I actually like that there's no built-in sequencer. Instead you can use MIDI to pair it with a capable external sequencer like a Arturia Beatstep Pro or Pioneer Squid.
Had there been a built-in sequencer it probably would have been garbage and/or very basic
That's what the DR-202 was for. It couples with the SP-202. Same color scheme and everything. 💯
@@thetruemrstallings Yeah they look dope together. But there are better MIDI sequencers for the 202 nowadays. Although a dope feature of the DR-202 is using MIDI tracks and drum tracks alongside one another
@thetruemrstallings I have one but how do I use it as a sequencer with the SP 202 any idea?
Got mine for like 200. They now go for at least 400 which is ridiculous. It’s a good piece to add to your arsenal for sure. But not for anything over 300
Yeah the prices have gotten a little silly lately
That is nuts got a 202 and a 404 sx for 300 quid a good while back.
@@jimmyjesus8384 yea, many sites take a percentage of what your selling so the seller only gets half about what he’s asking
You either have a separate skateboarding channel or an identical twin so which is it?
I have a skate channel too yeah. I've not really been uploading to it recently though as its been winter here in the UK
Sp404 really needs to give up the circle thing, the asymmetry is def bad, but nowhere near as bad as MPC One
I still regret selling mine, 20+ years later.
I think I’d end up regretting it if I sold it so going to hold on for now!
I just saw someone post this on Reddit lol, is this a sign to get one!?
Looks like it 😅
@@spvidz found one on reverb for 130 but got some flaws, worth or not just want a beater
What kind of memory card does it take?
Smart media cards
Don’t sell it. Even if you only used once a year at Halloween you will regret selling it the moment you do.
Agreed 🙌
Hah! I dunno why but it seems like the perfect Halloween jam device. Just one night of the year, sample a drum break and a few seconds of a horror movie and crunch it all down into oblivion with lofi 1.
i still record my drums into a tape player to get them crunchy. old is gold
Definitely a good thing to be doing! 🙌
