I learned during the AoS reacts that where Rana's analysis flag goes, so goes my nation. If I was still plying the writing trade, I'd want her as a primary reader. She sees, she considers, she knows.
Pat has a point. Buffy has never once told Riley she loves him. She told Angel she loved Riley , but hasn't expressed that to Riley. But, yes Riley is showing his insecurities.

Also I agree wholeheartedly with your comments re Riley's insecurities. It's understandable that he has them, he's told buffy he loves her quite a few times over the last few episodes and she has not said it back. For someone in his insecure state, that's probably eating at him/weighing on him even more, BUT he should vocalize that to her as Suraj said. Buffy may not love him OR she may just have a different love language. Either way, he should talk to her and not assume.

100% agree. Though I feel that there are a fair amount of folks out there who don’t possess that kind of emotional IQ. Which is unfortunate.
As Pat was trying to point out, Riley likely feels he can't confront her directly because he thinks she'd lie, she'd say she loved him regardless of what she actually felt. And the alternative is worse, she'd admit to not loving him. So the only outcomes of confronting her is that he is either still not sure what she feels, or she ends it. There's no positive outcome.
There is nothing she could say that would convince him she loved him, because just saying it doesn't mean anything, it's how you behave with a person over time that shows your actual feelings. If she starts acting as if she loves him after being confronted she could just be pretending. If he doesn't confront her, and she starts acting more like she loves him, it's easier to trust her. So confronting her would make it harder to tell what she actually feels.
At this point Riley does the only thing he feels he can do, he tries to figure out what he can do to make Buffy love him before she realizes she doesn't love him
@@avon8794 I understand your point, but it only means that Riley doesn't trust Buffy. Because if he did, he would trust her if the answer was that she loves him. Not everyone shows love the same way. Not talking with her, not trusting her... he's destroying their relationship little by little.
Right here, in this episode. She poured her heart out to him. It may not be enough for him, but that's his problem. I'm not being sassy against Riley, I'm just saying, he can't change her. If this is how she expresses her love, that's it. She can't be what he wants. Either she is enough for him, and the way she loves him is. Either it's not. But if he doesn't trust her and doesn't talk to her about it... He can't blame her, not really.

Though she had a discussion w/ Willow about how the normalcy isn't satisfying to her. Her relationship w/ Riley actually improved once they found out about each other's secrets. But now, he's back to being normal.
Spidey screaming "You're not real!" at Dawn has me HOWLING - I love it.
Riley's actor played basketball in high school and college and earned a sports scholarship, which is why they gave his character a basketball hoop in his dorm room and a basketball scene in this episode.
I believe they mentioned some of that in the video.

Earlier in the episode Buffy says "if thats what i wanted, Id be with Spike". In the youtube version of this watchalong, seems like they missed that. Which, fair enough. It was such a casual, throwaway line that you really only notice on a second watch.
The genuine shock at the end of the episode was pretty great, and the dream reveal. The collective sigh of relief was amazing as well.
This episode was kind of a pivotal one, setting up some significant pieces for the rest of the season, even if you don't quite realize what it is yet.

I think I understand what Pat is trying to say.
Riley seems uncertain on how Buffy feels about him. From Riley's perspective, she doesn't truly love him like she did Angel, he feels like she has love for him, but is not IN love with him. So when he addresses the issue, Pat is saying she'll say anything just to keep the peace but deep down knows she's not THAT into him.
Notice in this episode Buffy says "Riley I need you." which is not the same as "Riley I love you."
Pat's got it, but he was getting gaslighted because he couldn't say it eloquently like you did.

I don’t think Riley’s insecurity is entirely unfounded. Riley has openly said he loves Buffy twice now and both times Buffy has never said it back
In my honest opinion I don’t think he the problem is Riley wanting to be as strong as her. I think the real problem is that he’s clinging on to Buffy too much. The initiative was Riley’s purpose what he dedicated himself to. After that went under Riley didn’t have a purpose so he clung to Buffy, It’s just like what Graham said in the episode, he had mission and now he’s just the mission’s boyfriend. Riley trying to make Buffy his purpose but Buffy doesn’t need him like that, which caused him to put his insecurities and doubts on to Buffy, which was definitely wrong. But not completely off base.

It's love, not in the way he wants it, apparently. And he's entitled to feel that way and wanting a different kind of love. But so is Buffy in the way she expresses her love. If it's not enough for him, it's because he is insecure and doesn't trust her. Yes he's lost a lot. So I get where he comes from. But... that doesn't change that he is only making assumptions based on his feelings only.
If Buffy told him directly, he wouldn't believe her. He'd just say that she was just saying it to make him feel better.
