Larry was the man, I watched the Celtics all through the eighties. (I’m 71). He was top man then and now. There was nothing like sitting down with a cold beer and watching Bird do his thing. Really something to look forward to after a hard week. Bird was special.

They beat the Lakers to get to the finals. Sampson hit a ridiculous shot at the buzzer to advance. I really wanted to see the Lakers get beat by this great Celtics team, it would have been one for the ages.
Your enthusiasm is infectious. No one ever mentions the importance of touch passes. Larry did them all the time because he knew that the defense couldn't respond quickly enough to defend against them. The jump ball that Larry Bird won was against Olajuwon, a 7-footer.
Thank you! I just get really immersed in the game for some reason, even though it’s old… and yeah Larry was all over the floor in this game… definitely playing high IQ basketball

I enjoyed watching the game with you. Larry Legend was EVERYWHERE on the court. Offense and defense rebounds, taking the ball out of bounds, incredibly complicated passing and scoring as it is presented. Watching him never gets old, thanks for the memories.
It's amazing the way he was able to take control of his team and the game in a way that empowered his team to play better without him. Bill Russell is the only other player I can think of who did that.
He also called this game his perfect all around game but in Phoenix one year after the 3 rd quarter he was 1 steal away from a quadruple double. Once the coaches realized that they asked Larry if he wanted to go in and get that one steal. He said nah I’ve killed them enough today! His stats were 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 9 steals.
There really is no better skill player ever. Than Larry Bird. The guy knows at all times where everyone is. He can shoot, pass, and rebound. He really LIVED basketball. Not like players of the new millennium. They aren't even close.
I watched this live. His stats certainly didn't tell it all. He was doing it all, if you study this game. Great player for the ages. Remember, it isn't all about points or stats.
This Rocket's team was loaded too. Rodney McC won an NCAA title with Louisville. Reid was very good and then Samson and The Dream. Thing is, when Larry and the Celtics turned it up, then beat everyone. Jordan, Magic, Hakeem, DOM, Pistons, Sixers, Bucks. Everyone. Larry Bird is/was the best all around basketball player of all time. Parrish was a damn track star. So underated. So many hustles for long outlets for easy buckets. His hands her like glue and was a great finisher. McHale's FG% was pretty tasty too. Hustle was rewarded with dimes from Bird, DJ, Danny and Walton.
It's not about how much you score or how many three's you can make. It's about what you contribute, how much you hustle, keeping your team involved....even when they are not at their best but you push them to succeed and the willingness to sacrifice yourself every game....that's what makes Larry the true goat and the best all around player in my opinion.
I like your reactions on Larry Legend. Thanks man. Early on you mentioned how Good D.J. was in these highlights you have been watching. You hit that right on the head my friend. Larry has always said even with Mchale and parrish that D.J. was the best player he ever played with.
Really wish that they would remaster these old games , so that we could really watch in HD , I would love to go back and watch old sports , not just Basketball , tennis , boxing , football .
It was naturally assumed every season that the Lakers would come out of the West. They were that dominant. So it was a surprise that Houston broke through in 1986. BTW, one of the bench replacements as Bird comes out was Rick Carlisle, who was on the 84 and 86 Celtics championship teams, and then (I think) Bird gave him his first assistant coaching job in Indiana. And the Rocket that scores the final basket before the fans swarm the court was Craig Ehlo, more famous from when Jordan hit the famous buzzer-beater in 1989 against him (when he was a Cav).
Ralph had a chance to play with the Celtics. Red went to his house , trying to get him to come to the NBA a year early. Talked to his family and one of Ralph's uncles convinced him to finish college. Just imagine the Celtics with Ralph also , IE Bird would have 5 ring's and magic only 3.........and get this , the same uncle that convinced Ralph to stay in school asked Red to be the guest speaker at a college graduation a few years later . Oh Just so you know broski , Boston was known for the DEFENSE on the ball not when they bring the ball up but down, they would strip and strip like it was nothing. All three in the low post. It was crazy way to play but they were masters at it. 3:45 Dream shake wasn’t working on Bird,You would need to bring it up and forced to shoot cause if you bring it down to fake or dribble, they would strip you clean baby. Detroit was victimized by that soooo many times….it was fun watching them play. Look into Cleveland play too, they was also fun to watch but you don’t hear much of them if at all…. Giving credit where it’s due that all
The thing about bird is that he could have averaged 30 plus a game. But he was far more dangerous when he got others involved. I used to love when they got out on the break and didnt dribble but rather passed 2 or 3 times for the easy buckets. The 86 celts lost 1 home game all season.
In his book Drive, Bird said some things he feels more comfortable doing left handed such as eating or writing, yet when he would write on a blackboard he just naturally did that right handed. I think he naturally played basketball right handed, shooting, dribbling, and at some point worked to become proficient with both.

Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks.
