That's a pretty concise description of how to brush gradients like that. I've tried to explain it to others, but you summed it up really well. Also helps having the video to illustrate as well. Thanks for contributing to the 8k+ videos on making crystals!
I made Crystal scenery recently and there are two things that this tutorial missed: Cover the rough bubbly texture of the foam, and harden the models, as they are susceptible to getting caught. I did this by coating my models in filler, then PVA glue mix for strength. For hardening them I used varnish, which also made them shine. I'm selling a huge set of crystal scenery - enough to fill a board - so message me if you're interested.
This is a great idea now for 9th edition, as terrain and cover have increased greatly in value. I'm going to build a bunch of these for my new Necrons. Awesome work on the cheap too!
Awesome job, my friend! I was thinking you could also use this same technique if you were to make the crystals for a cosplay outfit or armor. I'm glad I found your channel, you've given me a lot of ideas!
I've GOT to get me one of those tables! Great idea making that fence out of foam; I've seen wood fences, but using the materials already on hand is just so... Wyloch
Actually no, it's just a sheet of printer paper. And it's there to give a smooth surface (the foam is very porous and trying to use it as a fence causes binding, so this solves that). Bonus: yes, protects against melting.
Can't believe I just noticed this. Wyloch, can you do a tutorial on how you made your own tall rip fence for your cutter? Looks like you used 1 inch XPS pieces to do it
I want to do this for my vintage he-man Castle Grayskull to make a crystal chamber of Power. what size will work it will be hidden within a chamber in a wall.
I don’t know how much those citadel paints cost but you can thin out that 99¢ acrylic paint and spray it through your airbrush. I’ve gotten excellent result with it
I have indeed. And after discussing with Jeremy (Black Magic Craft), agreed he could cover that, since he really focuses on the Proxxon on his channel, and it would make sense with his content.
Awesome love what you done I copied a lot making terrain for my 40 k tables. Would love to see your take on both Eldar and or Tau Terrain ( As I will be working on producing both over the next few months.
As a geologist, without getting too much into crystallography: I like how you have crystal faces running parallel to each other. Weird mismatched angles always make a crystal seem cartoony to me, I don't know if that's something anyone else notices, haha.
powersave2 black base or 50/50 gw fang(black + dark grey/blue) highlights in fang then heavy wash > rehighlight with fang or a mid tone grey on the sharpest of corners keeping a majority of the crystal black/fang . E.g tip and the corner points and along the light source edge if the grey you use is too bright rewash in black wash . Too add shine mix it with a medium gloss. Trick to paint black is extremely sharp high lights.
I do not have a video, it is just two slabs of XPS foam hot glued together at a perfect right angle, and then a small square shaped runner that fits in the guide channel also hot glued on.
Oh oh oh I see the proxxon table guide (I kept thinking like a backyard "fence"). I have not done a tutorial on that yet, but it's made just how it looks. In fact, you don't need perfect 90 degree cuts. You only need to ensure that the vertical piece is perfectly vertical when you hot glue it to the horizontal deck. To do that, I put an old CD jewel case up against it, held in place as the glue cooled.
Wow your job is amazing!!!! A question about your proxxon. What do you have for the foam support and guide? Congrats about your job. For people starting like me is like a roadmap xd
@@WylochsArmory thanks for the answer!!! how do you fix it to the table so it doesnt move when you cut it? Example min 2:04. Thanks! Love the idea I will make one for my own. But please give me the tip hahahaha xdd
@@jocruzf There's a thin block of foam glued on underneath which fits exactly into that ~1 cm channel you see running along the closest edge of the table.
On Amazon for about $10 I think, 50 17ml bottles. Make sure to get the ones with the little funnel, that helps a lot. Thin down the paint w/ distilled water, you were going to do it anyway and it helps it to pour from the pot.
Thanks for your advices gentlemen, those might help any thread reader out there, i already have my own methodology to transfer those. Just came to say GW - Citadel please make your paints practical. Cheers!
A foam cutter is a tool you don't 100% need but if you're going to be serious on terrain crafting do NOT be afraid to splurge, it is worth the investment. Look at the Proxxon foam cutter table used in this video, you will not regret it.
Music makes hearing you difficult, I have hearing issues and the additional drone of the music makes it very difficult to follow your talking. Hence, not subscribed
If you ran a Dragon Age themed game, these painted blue and red would make great Lyrium and Red Lyrium sets!
Sweet project, and doable even with the cheap, battery operated foam cutters, or a knife. A definite must for the terrain collection. (y)
Thx!

Probably the best crystals tutorial I've ever seen. Very nice work. Need to experiment with blues... Like StarCraft minerals...
Thx!
Bless you for showing the method with and without an airbrush!

is that just a thin piece of cardboard you put on the foam facing the wire? I assume you put it to prevent that fence from melting :)
Actually no, it's just a sheet of printer paper. And it's there to give a smooth surface (the foam is very porous and trying to use it as a fence causes binding, so this solves that). Bonus: yes, protects against melting.
I know what I'm going to do when I get home from work :-)
I love the stuff u are making but I really enjoyed the inn you made and I wish you could make more of the medieval type bulding
Thx for watching! I'll continue to be mixing it up, genre-wise.

I’m about to do a blue crystal video. Liked how you showed two versions of making them.
I dont know if you will see this and its probabbly a lot easier than it looks, but HOW did you make that fence on yer proxxon at @2:01
This was really helpful thanks!
how bout a video on how to make that jig to get straight cuts
Very nice looking Crystals also that army is looking bad ass!

Certainly - and I often do that. But in this special case I wanted them to match my army exactly.
Love the craft.but can i use packing foam? I don't have XPS in my country.thanks
Another great video..... every think of doing a video on the proxxon table jigs you have made?

What if I wanted a different color glow, let say a bright red. What colors should I use?
Color combo for some obsidian crystals? To match with RuneHammer's Dark Suns stuff?
Perhaps black base, purple mid tone, no high tone, and pure white for edge highlighting?
powersave2 black base or 50/50 gw fang(black + dark grey/blue) highlights in fang then heavy wash > rehighlight with fang or a mid tone grey on the sharpest of corners keeping a majority of the crystal black/fang .

I want to use this with white crystals will the paint tips work the same with different whites ?
Great tips Thanks!
From your video it looks like citadel finally got rid of the paint pots - or as I like to call them - dry out pots. Or am I seeing things?
Thank you for another great vid!
Thx!
This is why Superman doesn't do crafting! Love those crystals.
Very amazing. How would you do one that stones with energy?
I like the he brushed crystals but the air brushed look better.
Impeccable
Thx!
Nice one...

What music is used
Great video!

Have you tried working with upholstery foam yet?
is there a video or any other information on the XPS jig you use on your Proxon table?

really cool.
paper minis is so cool
Thx!
What mm nozzle did you use in the Airbrush. I have .35mm and .5mm. Thanks in advance for the info!
Wyloch, could you please show in more detail that fence you made? You probably did already and I missed it.
Tommy D fence? Mmmmm....not sure what you're referring to....what time?

It looks simple enough as long as I can get a few perfect 90° cuts.

Isn't that a valejo paint bottle with a citadel sticker on it?
It was an Army Painter bottle, which I reused and poured GW paint into.
awesome, thanks

The fence, I just made out of insulation foam board and covered the wire-facing side with a sheet of paper.

is the airbrush you are using the one you posted in the description?
Man, I can't remember. But the one in the description could absolutely do the job in this video. There's no fine detail work anywhere.
Wow very nice project! The highlights are genius! What is the name of the song in the background??
Thx! Lord of the Land, by Kevin MacLeod
Wyloch's Crafting Vids Thanks !
Hi sir very nice, it's too good.
What is the Metirial name and it is available please? Like wich deportment related to stationary or?
I would definitely do this if I had a wire cutter, it’s hard to find one at a decent price.
Why not just use a knife like I did? :-)

Tiberium!
You have not enough minerals!
C&C tiberium :)
there's a easier way using spare sprues to make small crystals ;3

I can't for the life of me paint my crystals right.
you mean tiberium
