I collect Ghostbusters merchandise and I have a lot of stuff. I even have an empty can of Heinz Pasta of The Real Ghostbusters from the 1990s. I'm going to wait a little while until I sell it. I've had it for 30 years and it's in great shape. In 2019, I had an offer of $250.00 however, I turned it down.
also i love the other girls being all "get out! out! i'll scream!" all flustered and frustrated and then Ripley is just "get. out." and he shuffles off before she can get her flamethrower.
I love the idea that Janine created the logo. It makes a lot of sense to me. Like she suggested it as a dismissive joke when Ray went to interview her for the job, but he took it as a serious suggestion. I can't imagine either Egon or Peter being that bothered about a logo at all.
If I thought they'd put in that much effort, I'd almost think that's why they had Chris Hemsworth's character pitching logos in Answer the Call, as a reference to the book.
Ah the Richard Mueller novel. It does give greater insight into the characters backgrounds and motivations. It's no wonder JMS hired him as a writer for The Real Ghostbusters.
It's nice when the novelization is a bit different than the film it's based on. Much like BTTF novel. They can write in some deleted scenes, ideas that were good but were either too hard to film/didn't work pace wise, and adding characters that had to be cut.
Yeah I read the novelization to Albert Pyun's The Sword and the Sorcerer by Norman Winski, liked how he added some more lore to the setting but was also kinda funny how "horny on the main" some of the writing was.
I remember reading the novelization of E.T. The Extraterrestrial as a kid a few years before I got to see the actual movie on VHS. I was very confused at how much was missing from the movie. Especially not hearing ET have full blown conversations with his potted plant.
The first scene with Dana and Peter in her apartment definitely only works because she's so clearly not really threatened by him. Props to Sigourney Weaver.
Wonder what the Q5 version of this story would be. Probably just a picture book of Slimer and the rest going on a picnic (prepared by Jeanine of course). Then Slimer eats all the food, and Peter proclaims "I love you, spud!" The last 3 pages are blank because the story was cancelled due to low interest.
With the "modem" science. It was probably that the reprint was made by scanning the original into a computer and the OCR fucked up. This happens with a lot of reprints where they don't bother proofreading
It’s not just novelizations. Some Kindle editions of books are scanned from a print edition, then not proofread at all. I got a Kindle version of the usual Penguin Books paperback edition of The City of God by St. Augustine. Thousands of copies of several of the same few scanning errors, plus a few each of dozens of others. They didn’t even have some unpaid intern flag the errors for correction, they just did nothing.
Man, novelizations are awesome. Even if they're not as good as the movie, you get to see some of the previous version of the film make it onto the page. Also, impressive note taking, that's a full on clipboard there. Overall, this review makes me wanna watch Ghostbusters again. Timeless classic of a film.
The X2 novel is a great example of that, since it includes the ending where Jean Grey survives instead of being lost at Alkali Lake... and also has much more visceral descriptions of what Stryker's Anti-Cerebro does to mutants.
One thing that will always make me curious about reading a novelization or the comics of a movie that has a cartoon...Whose voices do you imagine saying these lines more? The movie cast or the cartoon cast.

Your Ghostbusters content is my go-to when I'm in a bustin' mood. I recommend the IDW stuff if you haven't yet.
I always enjoy novelizations that are based on early drafts and scripts. The Back to the Future novelization by George Gipe is a favorite of mine. The original ending with the DeLorean driving to a nuclear bomb test site is bookended brilliantly with the original book opening of Marty, already in school and in class where a film of the bomb test from 1955 is being shown to the class. There's a lot of odd changes and I find it interesting that the description of Marty in the book as the outfit that Eric Stoltz is wearing in his performance of Marty, including a US Patent Office T-shirt with an electric guitar on it and green sneakers.
I actually do remember reading the ghostbusters 2 novelization and being very confused about extra scenes not featured in the movie. Thanks for the memories, Phelan!
I love unhinged movie novelizations. I once read a Creature from the Black Lagoon released 23 years after the movie. Where the Gill-Man was changed to a giant frog-dolphin and the doctors spend a whole chapter looking at his junk.
@@UJEvans I mean if they could spend an entire chapter about looking at this thing's dong I'm sure lascivious and lecherous thoughts are plentiful among the male characters. I mean considering the stuff in this otherwise pretty tame Ghostbusters novelization that doesn't surprise me one bit.

Amazing video Phelous. Novelizations are kind of becoming a lost art, replaced more and more by things like Disney’s kind of reimaginings like UnBirthday and what have you, so it’s interesting to see media like this discussed. Loved it.

I also like how you still post consistently after all these years. Even though you didn't gain that many subscribers throughout time on youtube, nor are you getting many subscribers today, which you certainly deserve, you still do what you love.
17:40 Maybe they just changed the design of the prop, but I'd imagine that "trinocular goggles" are supposed to have three lenses rather than two. Either it refers to a different piece of a equipment or they just made regular goggles and changed the name because they didn't want to deal with that.
I agree novelizations are interesting. Take for example the Dragon Ball Super: Broly light novel which reveals Broly achieved his Super Saiyan form not due to rage but intense sorrow over Paragus' death. I personally like the idea as losing someone can make one feel a variety of emotions as I imagine Krillin's death made Goku feel other emotions besides intense rage (guilt over failing to finish Frieza off & sorrow over losing his best friend & not having a way to resurrect him as Krillin had already died once before & the Namekian Dragon Balls were a no go at the time)! One could argue that Kale achieved her LSSJ form due to her intense jealousy brought on by her fear of abandonment. Sure it may seem counterintuitive to make a light novelization of a Dragon Ball film, but I think it can be interesting & besides anything that might get a person to read is a plus! Nice to hear that they hired Ricard Mueller to work as a writer on the Real Ghostbusters cause he did the novelization of the films, as its good to have writers already familiar with the characters & setting. Also, the fact he gave Janine credit for the NO GHOST LOGO is a good call as far as I am concerned!
Novelizations of movies are fascinating in that they’re kind of like world building! I’ve also read novelizations of other 80’s films like ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Clash of the Titans’; and they really do have the luxury of expanding on characters and settings more than a movie is allowed to within so much time given.
I once saw the kid's picture book version of George of the Jungle, and even that included a scene deleted from the movie. Had a photo of the scene and everything.
My favourite was the novelisation of The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (not as good as the comics but superior to the crap movie in every way) That made it a book based on a movie based on a comic based on a series of books
7:49 That reminds me of a scene from an episode of a show on Fox in the 90s called Bakersfield, P.D.. A cop is really exited because his new partner is black, just like in the movies!
honestly the unused "Later, man!" scene with winston is incredibly fucking funny. i dunno if it would've killed the pacing in the montage, but the delivery is ace.
As a young kid, I used to not like Ghostbusters for a very odd reason - at the time, I didn't realize other people could be named Ray. Certain parts, like when Venkman encounters Slimer - "It's right here, Ray, it's looking at me" - I used to think Venkman was talking to ME. That weirded me out so much. Anywho, I'll do what Phelous says at 8:07. He was totally talking to me when he said that.

Ahha, so I was right all along! Ray's ghost BJ was a wet dream all along! As a kid, that scene thankfully went over my head, though I always felt it was a weird dream Ray was having & as an adult I could always accept Ray might have a ghost fetish (consciously or subconsciously) & that it was just a wet dream resulting from said fetish. My other theory was that Ray had an interaction with a SUCCUBUS as its a supernatural entity (demon) that preys on men sometimes in their dreams. Personally, I think it works best as a dream sequence rather than something that actually happened! Still, the writer could have gone with the SUCCUBUS angle as some versions depict them as invading the dreams of men! I assume it was meant to be a dream in the script, or that is how the writer interpreted the scene!
This is the stuff I like about these books adaptations of movies. More specifically the ones based on earlier scripts before finalizing them. The differences in favorite quotes, the deleted scenes, reordered scenes, inner monologues, all of that is great to discover.

Glad you made it through the hurricane safely! But ugh, being without power for so long must have been just dreadful. So happy you're back to normal! Stay awesome, Phelous. ❤
I don't think there are as many interesting differences in the GB II novel but if I find I'm wrong about that I might go over it. I'd like to possibly go over the comic The Real Ghostbusters in Ghosbusters II at some point though.
i admire your restraint in not adding tasha yar saying "i don't belieeeeeve this!" at denise crosby's audition/read bit. also i hate thinking too deeply about the proton packs but man does the fridge logic of the guys getting radiation poisoning from those fuckin proton packs strapped to them for ages really get to me, especially in the novelization's descriptions lol
Great video, I'd love to see you do more novel 📖 adaptations of classic movies like: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Gremlins Transformers Masters of the Universe etc
Great video. I love novelizations that add extra backstory, scenes, and dialogue. As a few other people have said, the Gremlins novelization by George Gipe is great and definitely worth a read if you enjoy weird movie novelizations.
I actually found a children's Ghostbusters book recently called "Lights Out For Ghosts: An Adventure with The Real Ghostbusters" The art is pretty bad and I wouldn't be surprised if it was done by the same people who did the illustrations in the Ghostbusters joke book from a while back. A highlight is Winston left at the station sorting receipts, and Ray apparently has no face.
It’s interesting to see how the Novelizations work. For instance, the worst X-Men Film- The Last Stand- had its novelization Written by Chris Claremont.
How sad is it that the Superman discussion immediately made me think "Yeah, that's right since Krypton had a red sun he would've been little different from a human."
I love how the book gives a backstory to the Frightened Librarian Lady from the first movie about her love life sucking and how the last date she had the guy stole her TV... Richard Mueller is funny as hell
I loved the original novel. Read it several times until I had to tape the already shoddy cover back on. Before the advent of the internet and all the deep-dive wikis, this book had the most information we'd ever gotten on the guys--whatever remained canon or not. Love that they finally reprinted it for a whole new era of GB fans to discover.
25:44 Woah! What a difference 2 words makes. I never took the line "Dogs and cats living together" to mean the animals were boning each other whenever I heard it in the movie.
If you think that was wild, just wait til you get your hands on "Ghostbusters: The Return" by Sholly Fisch, which was kind of considered the unofficial GB3 before the newer films came out. It's quite a ride.
How’d I miss this upload?! I find the idea of novelisations of movies interesting, never read any myself but watched RUclips videos like this on them. I love the little differences in the story from the original script and random ideas from the authors minds
The novel is like listening to a very water down version of the movie, it's a curious take on the characters as well as adding in some delete scenes, as well as the characters acting out of character.
Ghostbusters! They're back in town! You need to pee? That is so crazy! Wut da fuq? There are ghosts in your bladder! You call the Ghostbusters, they extract it!
Those Baby Ruth references plus your caricature voicing of a more dumbed down Egon (and probably the 80's connection) and I couldn't help but think of Chunk in The Goonies.
It's nice to know that Janine and Egon's relationship came from somewhere, and how it was expanded upon in both cartoon series. I always hated how they pawned her off on Louis in the sequel, and then turned them into morons for some reason.

I remember starting but never finishing the novelizations of Batman and Back to the Future Part II. The BTTF novel had the deleted scene of Marty meeting Dave outside if Biff's casino. I gotta find those and buy them and finish them.
I always thought the bums would be stand-ins for eventually having Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy reprise their roles as Mortimer and Randolph Duke from Trading Places (which had Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy), since they had also appeared as them as bums in Coming to America (which also had Eddie Murphy).

That would be so awesome! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the comic - you've always got the most interesting and unique takes on things!
I'm glad there is no rap rap joke in the book
i admire your restraint in not adding tasha yar saying "i don't belieeeeeve this!" at denise crosby's audition/read bit. also i hate thinking too deeply about the proton packs but man does the fridge logic of the guys getting radiation poisoning from those fuckin proton packs strapped to them for ages really get to me, especially in the novelization's descriptions lol
Fridge horror.
I didn't know Denise Crosby auditioned for Dana Barrett
Great video, I'd love to see you do more novel 📖 adaptations of classic movies like:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990
Gremlins
Transformers
Masters of the Universe
etc
Great video. I love novelizations that add extra backstory, scenes, and dialogue. As a few other people have said, the Gremlins novelization by George Gipe is great and definitely worth a read if you enjoy weird movie novelizations.
Potato face, huh? Well I guess now we know why Peter loves to call him "Spud" so much in RGB.
The cheery receptionist was probably q5 Janine
I always wondered what the novelization was like. Thanks for making this video
I appreciate the dedication of the handwritten notes! The power was gone for so long!
Yeah, I was glad reading and taking notes on this novel gave me something to do during part of the black out at least.
It's funny to hear Ramis and Aykroyd portray Venkman in these auditions.
...I thought I imagined this book but some of these excerpts were like a slap to the face
We need more movie novelization reviews on RUclips.
I always took it that way, actually. Murray pauses ever so slightly before "living together", as though he was about to say something else.
R.L Stine (creator of Goosebumps) wrote the Ghostbusters 2 novelization.
He wrote the one aimed at younger kids, the full GB II novelization was written by Ed Naha.
@@phelous Whoops. My poop.
The novel is like listening to a very water down version of the movie, it's a curious take on the characters as well as adding in some delete scenes, as well as the characters acting out of character.
This was so fun. I'd love more videos like this.Phelous should going over more novelizations of films.
Ghostbusters! They're back in town! You need to pee? That is so crazy! Wut da fuq? There are ghosts in your bladder! You call the Ghostbusters, they extract it!
"Never order spooky spaghetti!"
1:31 Oh come on, can't we all just get...Beyond Thunderdome?
:D
Those Baby Ruth references plus your caricature voicing of a more dumbed down Egon (and probably the 80's connection) and I couldn't help but think of Chunk in The Goonies.
12:36 oh don't worry, I'm sure Egon only meant to build a Death Ray for peaceful purposes
This episode was brought you by Baby Ruth
So the Ghostbusters novelization is like either an expansion pack or a parallel dimension version with extra content?
Seeing older cinematic snapshots of famous places like New York City makes me sad. Good review though!
It's nice to know that Janine and Egon's relationship came from somewhere, and how it was expanded upon in both cartoon series. I always hated how they pawned her off on Louis in the sequel, and then turned them into morons for some reason.
Great video! I often wondered how a novelization would read, when one of the lead actors famously improvised most of their lines.
The novelizations of the Raimi Spiderman trilogy were excellent. They fleshed out the stories and added a lot to plot of the movies.
Keep up the awesome work! Love the channel.
I grew up on the novelisation that came out a few months before this version. It was written by Larry Milne and kept some of the swearing in it.
Great meta with that upload game. 😀
And great video, as always - I wish, we could see you more often! ;)
There's a new video almost every Friday.
@@phelous Damn YT! I rarely get notifications, although following you for years now and hitting the bell icon every time... even twice! :p
Just for you, I will go back to the good old days, make an entry in Google Calendar to remind me and then I check manually from now on! And yes, I will do this! :)
Greetings from Germany and have a great new year! ;)
my headcanon is that the character of Mr. David is actually Dave Saville who is down on his luck after the Chipmunks had a bitter split.
Honestly, the book makes me appreciate the final films all the more. :) Now, about the Twinkies… how much spores, mold and fungus can they grow?
I'd guess the Baby Ruth was a winking reference to when Bill Murray ate the one from the emptied pool in "Caddyshack".
Please do more phelous book reports!!
Love the name 🥳
The title thumbnail for this video is very apt. The novel IS pretty wild.
i'm listening to the audiobook of GhostBusters, the narrators voice for Lewis is spot on rick morannis
Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy would have been hilarious as the bums, particularly when one of them starts referencing Chuck Wepner.
I love my copy as it had stills from the movie halfway through. It's a bit dog eared these days though but it's a book that I'll never get rid of no matter what state it's in
Cool. I hope this new series continues, and you eventually review the Resident Evil novel series by S.D. Perry.
Oh that shit is gonna be hilarious.
Was that Denise Crosby and Kelly LeBrock trying out for Dana?
Yup!
It frustrates me your videos don't get more attention. Like you are consistently entertaining and informative, I blame RUclips. Anyways, I always enjoy your videos a lot, you're awesome
