This is a funny song. I never saw this video, we heard it on the radio, a LOT! Fun! Growing up in Miami, this song was a huge hit, yes it was silly, and we needed silly! It was also used in the movie Full Metal Jacket
My mom had a canary that very very seldom would sing. I would put on this song and crank the volume and the bird would go nuts ....singing and hopping around like crazy. Funny as he'll. 😂
It's a song that needs no analysis. It's frantic, catchy, manic, insane, loud, rude, fast, full of energy, absurd and memorable. Enjoy it without thinking and you'll love it forever.
Back then, if you needed to liven up a party, you would invite that dude over. This is actually a combination of two different songs, originally done by The Rivingtons, a black R & B group in the very early 60's. The two songs were "Papa Oom Mow Mow", and "Bird's The Word". The Trashmen were one of those bands that had a big hand in setting the groundwork for punk rock. There's always the argument about who was the first punk band and so many people point at the Ramones, but listen to the Ramones' style and listen to the Trashmen and you can hear a hell of a lot of influence trickled down (along with other garage and surf bands of the era such as the Ventures).

During the huge Surf music craze of 1963, The Trashmen were probably the most landlocked group of them all, hailing from Minnesota. This is their most famous single, but they released a few others that were just as good or better. Their version of Malaguena is seriously good. The Trashmen don't actually appear in this video. The guy dancing is just the host of whatever show this was dancing to the single.

Hi again, Jamal! First things first! There officially was never a video for Surfin' Bird. What you see here is a visual simply thrown together for a pop music TV show for teenagers, in which the drummer for The Trashmen, Steve Wahrer (who also did the Surfin' Bird vocals), improvised a "Chicken Dance" (Get it? "Bird"!) for the camera. SONG HISTORY - In 1962, a black Doo Wop / R&B group out of Los Angeles, The Rivingtons, released a novelty recording, Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow. The next year, 1963, The Rivingtons released another novelty recording, The Bird's The Word. In 1963, a Minnesotan Rock group, The Trashmen, having heard both Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow and The Bird's The Word, realized that the two songs could be combined together. When The Trashmen were performing the combined arrangement, Surfin' Bird, in a club, a local DeeJay liked what he heard and arranged for The Trashmen to record and release Surfin' Bird, which became a big hit. The Rivingtons threatened to sue The Trashmen for plagiarism.
In Cleveland in the '60'-''70's-'80's.... Late night/bad horror/ sci fi movies w/skits.... and this song during breaks....."Goulardi", then" Big Chuck & Hoolihan"then Big Chuck and Little John, were the hosts👻👽👾
That old "live" footage from American Bandstand was such an unfair representation. The Trashmen were a 4 piece group, my understanding is the studio was only willing to pay the airfare for Steve Wahrer (drummer & the voice of the bird) for the TV appearance. There an incredibly talented surf/garage rock band. Surfin' Bird and its follow up songs (Bird Bath, Bird Dance Beat and Bird '65) might have nonsense lyrics but when you consider the era There incredibly aggressive almost proto punk songs. Without a doubt The Bird Is The Word!

He did not do this chicken hawk dance though as he was busy playing guitar, hahaha.
This clip is not actually the Trashmen. It is the clip that made the Dutch comedian Andre van Duin famous for this crazy performance! He is stil around today.
Its about the moment when jesus was on the cross & looked at him tormentors, the Romans, & looked up to the heavens & said “forgive them father, for they know not what they do”; Supposedly, the lyrics of this song is what god, the heavenly father on high, said back to jesus, & in that moment, Jesus knew that everything was gonna be alright...naw, just kidding, this dude was on some serious drugs.

Has there ever been a funnier music video? The dude's career as a comedian was launched that day and later he became the top comedian in Dutch history. He performed this song in 2010 in Sweden and the kids went NUTS dancing to it, especially when he hit the oo mau mau part. They went NUTS hopping on the stage and all manner of good fun. He did not do this chicken hawk dance though as he was busy playing guitar, hahaha.
It is Andre van Duin from the Netherlands. A famous comedian. Who did a sketch of the song. Because everone knows the bird is the word ;)
Wow, my ex ended up walking like that…right into the funny farm🤣🤣🤣
My dad would have said, turn that crap off! I never saw the video back then. TV programs were very limited.
This clip is not actually the Trashmen. It is the clip that made the Dutch comedian Andre van Duin famous for this crazy performance! He is stil around today.
The Cramps (Goo Goo Muck) also covered this. Boy what a bass rift! :D
3:10 - this part makes me wonder if he predicted techno/rave... 😆
Oh and that's a toucan in the background, not a chicken..
This was a combination of two earlier doo wop novelty songs, "Papa Oom Mow Mow" and "The Bird is the Word".
