The Trashmen were one of those bands that had a big hand in setting the groundwork for punk rock. There's always the argument about who was the first punk band and so many people point at the Ramones, but listen to the Ramones' style and listen to the Trashmen and you can hear a hell of a lot of influence trickled down (along with other garage and surf bands of the era such as the Ventures).

  • @supafrogg258

Hi again, Jamal! First things first! There officially was never a video for Surfin' Bird. What you see here is a visual simply thrown together for a pop music TV show for teenagers, in which the drummer for The Trashmen, Steve Wahrer (who also did the Surfin' Bird vocals), improvised a "Chicken Dance" (Get it? "Bird"!) for the camera. SONG HISTORY - In 1962, a black Doo Wop / R&B group out of Los Angeles, The Rivingtons, released a novelty recording, Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow. The next year, 1963, The Rivingtons released another novelty recording, The Bird's The Word. In 1963, a Minnesotan Rock group, The Trashmen, having heard both Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow and The Bird's The Word, realized that the two songs could be combined together. When The Trashmen were performing the combined arrangement, Surfin' Bird, in a club, a local DeeJay liked what he heard and arranged for The Trashmen to record and release Surfin' Bird, which became a big hit. The Rivingtons threatened to sue The Trashmen for plagiarism.

That old "live" footage from American Bandstand was such an unfair representation. The Trashmen were a 4 piece group, my understanding is the studio was only willing to pay the airfare for Steve Wahrer (drummer & the voice of the bird) for the TV appearance. There an incredibly talented surf/garage rock band. Surfin' Bird and its follow up songs (Bird Bath, Bird Dance Beat and Bird '65) might have nonsense lyrics but when you consider the era There incredibly aggressive almost proto punk songs. Without a doubt The Bird Is The Word!

Original songs by The Rivingtons: 1) Papa-Ooom-Mow-Mow 2) Mama-Ooom-Mow-Mow, 3) The Bird is the Word. The trash man took the chorus of the two or three songs to make their version. Lawsuit now states that they must give the Rivingtons credit for the song.

I don't know if I've posted this here or what. But the flipside of this record should have a tune called King Of The Surf, same band, but you wouldn't know it. Link:

Dude, I love ya, but none of your viewers were around when this came out. You know, 60-some years ago? I'm 59, and I grew up with it. (My Pop had the most bizarre collection of 45s in the state. This was one of the normal ones. I live for novelty records.)

I know that this is a combination of 2 songs by a band called The Rivingtons. One of which was called Bird Is The Word, which I'm not as familiar with, but there is another song of theirs which I do enjoy called Papa Oom Mow Mow, which I would definitely recommend checking out. Very fun song.

This song is a favourite of Peter Griffen and there was a cover done by Pee Wee Herman for the movie back to the beach. It is song if the t8mes where silly novelty song could make the charts. Like Monters Holiday by Buck Owen's, Kick out tge jams by the tubthumpers, Ernie (The Fastest Milkcart in the West), Funky Gibbon, and of course Monster Mash. It would be good yo the reaction to some of these sill songs

This is actually a cover of two songs originally recorded by the Rivingtons; The Bird is the Word and Papa Ooo Mow Mow. I think it was the prior year. There is no video of them that I know of but the audio is on You Tube. This is much funnier.

Has there ever been a funnier music video? The dude's career as a comedian was launched that day and later he became the top comedian in Dutch history. He performed this song in 2010 in Sweden and the kids went NUTS dancing to it, especially when he hit the oo mau mau part. They went NUTS hopping on the stage and all manner of good fun. He did not do this chicken hawk dance though as he was busy playing guitar, hahaha.

Its about the moment when jesus was on the cross & looked at him tormentors, the Romans, & looked up to the heavens & said “forgive them father, for they know not what they do”; Supposedly, the lyrics of this song is what god, the heavenly father on high, said back to jesus, & in that moment, Jesus knew that everything was gonna be alright...naw, just kidding, this dude was on some serious drugs.
