I bought this song on a 45 record when it came out with my allowance money. I was only 10 years old. I still dig it today. Too bad when this did this video that they didn`t show the whole band instead of just the lead singer.
i remember this song as a kid. i wonder then, and still do now, just how in the world did he make his voice sound like. special sound effects , if it even existed back then, was in its infancy. hahaha listening to this song, and watching this dude still makes me smile. thanks for posting this one here. it excited every one i knew once upon a time.
I still wonder if Dick Clark knew about The Bird? Hahaha!!! This is Awesome! Peace and TY...I say that because did DC ever let anyone sing live or just lip sync?
Wonderfully goofy song. I sure wish someone had synked a re-mastered version of this song with this video so we could hear it with the heavy bass line as it was originally recorded. This is about as heavy as rock got before the Beatles, not matched until the hard rock groups of the late 60s. And only one chord for almost the whole song. No wonder Seth McFarland loves it. Would love to hear a true stereo mix of it. Glad this was posted even if we don't get to see the rest of the group.
'F' Family Guy! I was born and raised in Minneapolis (hometown of the Trashmen) and we had this record. I was in first grade, 1963, and was nuts about it! The Trashmen recorded on the 'Garrett' record label. If you have one of the original 45's it says Minneapolis, MN right on it. It ranked number 4 on the Billboard 100. Very popular. I understand it is still a major hit in Brazil for some reason. Then the new year came along and in February 1964, on Ed Sullivan, came the Beatles and the British Invasion. Everything changed and hair just kept getting longer until Disco, Rap and Hip Hop ruined everything. Anyway, we had another local band called the Castaways and in 1965 they did a song called 'Liar, Liar'. It was recorded on the 'Soma' record label which was started by a guy named 'Amos' something or other and he just spelled his name backwards. That 45 also say Minneapolis, MN on it. You know "Liar, Liar Pants On Fire'. It was big enough to make Hollywood and was done in some of those 1960's beach movies. Very popular, ranked number 12 on the Billboard 100. Debra Harry of 'Blondie' did a version of it years later. Both The Trashmen and The Castaways recorded in Minneapolis and their records were done on local labels and were pressed in Minneapolis. Total LOCAL packages that went national. That doesn't happen anymore. There is no such thing as regional record companies anymore. It's totally Corporate and pre-packaged now which is why everything sounds the same and we're still hammered with the same Rap and Hip Hop crap we've been listening to for over ten years.
Got a few 45s of this . But I'm Not too far from the CITIES .... up in Moorhead/Fargo .. :) .... Got a few on GARRET ...... Stupid and Funny stuff . :D
I was born in the 2000s (I’m not saying which year for obvious reasons) and I’ve found myself liking only music from before the 2000s . The Beatles and The Trashmen are two examples . I’m also into stuff like Nirvana and I feel like I should have been born in the 60s at least
Fall 1982, Arizona State University. I asked my little sister back home to make a cassette tape copy of the new Go Go’s album and mail it to me at the dorm. The cassette arrived. I pulled it out of the envelope and told my room mate to get ready to hear the greatest new wave song, “We Got the Beat.” Plugged it into the cassette recorder and cranked up the volume. Instead we heard the opening chords of “Bird is the Word.” The look on my room-mate’s face was priceless. Best practical joke ever! Long live “Bird is the Word!” ❤️ P.S. Whatever happened to these guys? Almost 60 years now. Hope they lived long and happy lives.
Drummer , Steve Wahrer (Shown here.) died many years ago. Bob Reed , the bass player , also died a few years ago.The Trashmen were still going with guitarist , Tony Andraeson's Brother , then Bob Reed's Son on drums until Bob passed away. I saw them four times in the 2000's. They were still great.

I remember this song very well in early '64. I couldn't believe how crazy it was ( and still is ) when I first heard it, but it's one of those songs that's so bad it's actually good. If that makes sense. Which of course it probably doesn't. lol
It does makes sense to me!! Still, it was unsual for that time !
There's a certain cathcy rytme to it
I bought this song on a 45 record when it came out with my allowance money. I was only 10 years old. I still dig it today. Too bad when this did this video that they didn`t show the whole band instead of just the lead singer.
Dick Clark was too cheap to fly the whole band in. He had Question Mark perform without The Mysterians once, making him look like a solo act.
A masterpiece!
Wow, what an oldie. I remember hearing that as a kid...
agree, punk as hell! some of the best sounds around, for my sore ears!
i remember this song as a kid. i wonder then, and still do now, just how in the world did he make his voice sound like. special sound effects , if it even existed back then, was in its infancy. hahaha listening to this song, and watching this dude still makes me smile. thanks for posting this one here. it excited every one i knew once upon a time.
My favorite forever!!!!!!!!!!!
Dick Clark, it's still very big in 2016. Love this and love watching that guy dance.

De 1963 al 2022 ...mucho más de 50 años y este tipo era ya un adelantado en un estilo de música con un ritmo muy contagioso...realmente un genio.
I'm eatin' up every word...
***** ................................................ " TURD " is a word.................................................
It's beautiful...
I remember when this came out. I still love it.
Steve Wahrer died from throat cancerat age 47 on Jam. 21, 1989.
RIP 🔥
I still wonder if Dick Clark knew about The Bird? Hahaha!!! This is Awesome!
Peace and TY...I say that because did DC ever let anyone sing live or just lip sync?
Dick Clark only let artists lip -synch , but , that was standard practice at the time.He was too cheap to fly the whole band in.
And decades later Morris Day and Time did a sexy new dance called The Bird! ☺
How on earth did this song become such a hit?
because the bird is the word
Musically challenged much?
I've known this song for my whole life and I've just realized it was 60 years old ! 😳
R.I.P Steve Wahrer

Bellissimo brano..mi riporta indietro nei miei 13 anni!!😢😢😢
This came out the last year I was at school. The dance, known to schoolkids as "The Birdie" became popular for a short time.
Ничего себе его колбасит!
Glad this was posted even if we don't get to see the rest of the group.
informative song
Epic song with Epic interview!
Adam i salute you regarding the family guy nonsense!!!
I was 12 and remember that crazy song.. LOL
R E P E T I T I O N
Again! Again! I love repetition!
I was 11 years old in 1963 and my parents laughed so hard at that song.
1:30 why did he say *fucking*
I love bird is the word
