Do Running Shoes Make You Stupid?

  • Despite 50 years of "advances" in running shoe technology, injury rates are still high (over 50% of runners and 80% of marathoners get injured every year).
    Why?
    And, more importantly, what can be done about this?
    Harvard's Dr. Irene Davis and Dr. Peter Attia had a GREAT conversation about this at peterattiamd.c...
    You'll hear Peter repeatedly mention the shoes he wears -- Xero Shoes -- and WHY.
    So, do running shoes make you "stupid"?
    Well, traditional running shoes -- with toe boxes that squeeze your toes, elevated heels, excessive padding, arch support and motion control -- inhibit natural motion and dramatically reduce (or eliminate) the sensations your feet are MEANT to transmit to your brain (so your brain knows how to intelligently control your body).
    More, the marketing from "Big Shoe" (a.k.a. "B.S.") are GREAT and convincing stories... they're just not always true!
    For example, showing how well a 2 pound steel ball bounces off of a new kind of foam makes you think, "YES! I want that kind of 'energy return'."
    Unfortunately, you are not a 2 pound steel ball, and that foam starts breaking down FAST and can lead to postural imbalances.
    Convincing you that you need cushioning (the research shows it has NO benefits), can make you blind to the information that IS helpful (for example, footwear that lets your feet bend, flex, move and feel naturally can build foot muscle strength as well as an actual foot exercise program).
    Check out your new "Smart Shoes" at xeroshoes.com and discover the fun and benefits of natural movement.

    I was taught this stuff in the 80s. I was told that modern shoes are stupid. I have worn a kind of mocasins since then. I always looked for thin soled flexible shoes. They are hard to find with cosistancy. This guy is absolutely right. The man teaching me this was teaching me how to run and do other physical activities and you need good footwear for that.
    Xero shoes are the best thing I've found outside of handmade moccasins. And unlike a shoe here and a shoe there from different companies that always vanish, Xeroshoes has many great shoes in one place.
    Modern shoes actually feel like foot coffins to me. I won't wear them.

    These work. Simply put. Just buy some.
    I have been dealing with trying to find a shoe that didn’t hurt my arch. This past September the tendons in my foot got so bad I had to go to a cane...I am 37 and relatively in shape and active. Nothing felt good unless I walked Barefoot.
    I remembered you all on Shark Tank and your ad came across RUclips. I gave you a shot and man they worked nearly same day.
    My arch isn’t fully recovered, but on its way to healing and I can now walk without a cane simply because of these shoes. Just great. I am convinced I would be no better right now had I not tried Xero Shoes.
    Thank you all so much. I think I own four pairs now!

    Watching this after finishing up a 5 mile run with a 20# weight vest in my HFS shoes! I’m seriously in love with your shoes, exactly what I’ve been looking for these last few years. My only regret is not getting a pair sooner. Don’t see myself going back to the “traditional” shoe and good luck convincing me otherwise. Expecting my 2nd pair of HFS Xero shoes tomorrow 😝

    I have recently got back into running, and barefoot running kind of sounded weird at first, but I started to walk barefoot, and doing toe stretching exercises, and it's odd how I never actually realized that my toes actually have so many useful muscles in them. It's like spending your entire life trying to type on a computer with mittens, and then suddenly one day you remove the mittens, and realize that you have fingers.
    I never trained my toes and foot musclse, and conseqeuntly never understood how to put specific parts of my foot under tension. It's literally unbelievable at first, realizing that you have all these muscles, and slowly working away and rehabiliting your foot. I remember that I was barely able to move my small toe, and I don't even know what my big toe was up too, because it was most certainly not doing what it should.

    My 9/4E feet were finding it painful to wear most other brands as most don't even cater to more than 9W and who knows what that width really is.
    Now having found Xero Shoes. Started with a couple sandals and now have moved into a sporty and dress style whose wide toe box and barefoot soles are like a dream come true. My feet have only felt this good when I walk actually barefoot, which has been most of my non working life. Unfortunately for me, I developed a bunion that splays outwards as opposed to inwards from tight toe boxes and artificial arch 'support' than must have weekened my large and small toe joints allowing the bunion problem. These shoes hug my feet and have made them feel natural in shoes.

    It’s scary how smart these companies are at buying what you don’t need. I’ve been a huge fan of Danner and went on tons of hikes with them but noticed my foot did change shape and not for the better. My toes felt too squeezed together and my balance is out of sync. It’s slight changes but it definitely made me worried about the long term. Glad I found out about you!

    I now own 3 pairs of your shoes and they are indeed smarter, at least from my initial perspective. However, I am 69 years old and will not be doing any running any time soon. However, I have a question regarding use of the shoes. How long do you think it will take (or maybe, how many hours of use will it take) for someone of my age who has run or played tennis on padded shoes all of his life to get acclimated to the effect of walking more naturally on your shoes? Right now, it feels a bit unnatural but yet a bit more "freeing" at the same time, if you get my drift.

      I wish there were a simple answer, but it's different for each person. I have a theory about "4 different neurological types" and what each of them needs to make the shift... but even that model doesn't predict time.
      I guess my best answer is, "Hey, there's no rush... take your time and listen to the feedback from your body. Then, one day, you'll realize you didn't even notice that you've changed, but you did!" ;-)

    I've been looking into changing from the shoes I usually wear, aside from working on my walking posture & reawakening all those muscles/tendons. My feet, knee and hip have pain that's been gradually getting worst and my toes are pretty cramped together, fell for the whole arch support and cushion bs most of my life but better late than never! I found a few different minimalist shoe brands and I've decided on giving your shoes a try, I'm pretty exited about it! No more dumb shoes :)

    I was ar about mile 11 of a 15 mile long run (long for me lol) and I was passing a huge field on both sides, there wasn’t anyone else in sight at all but this older gent and his dog, as I pass by he literally stopped me, at first I thought something was wrong, and he says “hey man, what are you running in?” (Z-trails) I was wearing the black/grey ones w black socks so I didn’t think anyone would notice my feet, and it was still super early. I gave him a quick story about how running shoes are really a new thing, and how we have basically what we need. Plus the best men of all time wore sandals, or went barefoot (Muhammad, Jesus, Abraham, Moses, Noah عليهم السلام ) so if they’re good enough for them I’ll be ok for most earthly applications

    i find i have to think about not heel striking while walking. Running i can understand hitting the ball of your foot like while sprinting. But walking means a short stride in order to hit flat or ball first. if I want to walk fast like 3 mile per hour I find myself reaching for padded dumb shoes.

    • @xeroshoes
      @xeroshoes  3 года назад +2

      When walking, "rolling" over your heel is fine. It's mostly about trying not to overstride and reach out too far in front of your body, and using your glutes and hamstrings.

    There is a term called Due Diligence and you need to do your due diligence when checking these claims by big shoe companies.

    • @xeroshoes
      @xeroshoes  3 года назад

      I've done the due diligence over the last 13 years which is what led me make this video.
      If you'd like to do the same, go to PubMed and check out the research by, among others, Harvard's Dr. Irene Davis and Dr. Daniel Lieberman. Dr. Sarah Ridge, Dr. Isabel Sacco, Dr. Christine Pollard, Dr. Peter Francis. Or, look at the footwear recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine and compare what they say to what Big Shoe companies are producing (the ACSM white paper and my comments about it are at xeroshoes.com/shoes/pickarunningshoe)
      Or check out the podcast with Dr. Peter Attia at www.peterattiamd.com/irenedavis or the Freakonomics podcast at www.freakonomics.com/podcast/shoes (called "These Shoes are Killing Me").
      Let me know what you think after you've checkout out those sources (and, again, there are many more, but I didn't want to be too overwhelming).
      Oh, in the FWIW category, some Big Shoe claims are simply debunked by an understanding of physics or anatomy or biology (depending on which claim you're investigating).
      While I'm not a practicing physicist or doctor, I have a long history in both -- I started tutoring physics to people of all ages when I was 15, and I started pre-med training at 17 which continued at Duke University. My interest and exploration of both has continued to this day.
      There's more to my autodidactism, but the above should give you a sense that, well, I'm not pulling these statements out of nowhere, and should you decide to head down this rabbit hole, you may come to agree.

    • @tazyou11
      @tazyou11 3 года назад

      @@xeroshoes I guess I was misunderstood, I meant that I agree that some of these claims by big shoe companies aren't backed by nothing , but some people don't do their due diligence and just buy into the claims and buy their shoes, which is what I had done until I saw one of your videos and bought my first pair of Xero shoes, the Hana style by the way, not because my daughter is named Hannah, but because I liked the look of the shoe and I couldn't get the Aptos because it was sold out in my shoe size. I can say that I received the shoes on the 28th of August and tried them on and then just last night went walking in them for 45 minutes with my wife on nice hard pavement. Wow, did I feel the pavement and it made me realize I need some adjustment time and that's okay. I have time left on this planet to get used to them, but I do like that you are lower to the ground, you have more room for your toes in the front of the shoe and they hug your feet like no shoe ever did on my feet, so thank you for making these shoes. I look forward to wearing these shoes out over time by walking on more hard pavement.

      @@xeroshoes i am not sure if I mentioned I am 54, now I am. It's been just over a week wearing my Hana style Xero shoes and I really like them. I am still or should I say, my feet are still getting used to them, but I can wait for my feet to not feel sore sometimes, like yesterday I was out all day in my Xero shoes and then at night went for a 45 minute walk and near the end of my walk my feet started to feel like on pins and needles and I was wearing socks, but when I took off my shoes and socks I noticed the bottom of my left foot was dirty or black mostly on the toes and the big and second toe felt like pins and needles when I touched them. My right foot wasn't so bad. I was diabetic some years ago, so that might explain the pins and needles, also I walked a lot that day. I lost weight and started exercising to become a non diabetic, but I have been told that even not being diabetic now , I can still get affected by it. I also noticed an indentation on the side of my second toe caused by my big toe. I could see how the side of my big toe fit with how the other toe looked. I know that wearing the type of shoes I did before were basically squishing my feet and that might take more time to change. Anyway I know this was a long message, but overall I like these shoes and will keep wearing them. I need to give my feet more time to adjust, I realize that. Thanks for developing these shoes. I believe they are the best for anyone's feet.

    The North Face has its new tech gimmick “Vectiv”. I admit the commercial starts off cool, then it says “VECTIV technology turns energy into momentum to propel you forward.” I’m like damn don’t my feet do that anyway?!? LOL
    Edit: it just noticed they’re also saying it reduced impact my 10% but it’s foam padded as hell which is proven to increase impact due to lost feedback. Continue to be a thorn in these liars necks

    Feet are hands. Nobody wants to wear gloves when they don't have to, and if they do have to a very minimal glove is much preferred. But feet are much tougher than hands, yet imagine people encasing their hands in something like a shoe that squashed their fingers together and started breeding fungus because they were afraid of injuring their hands. Would you call such people stupid..?

      If you read the 50,000+ reviews at xeroshoes.com/reviews/ you'll hear that your concerns about injuries are not the common experience you seem to believe.
      I'd never recommend doing anything that would be harmful. And what those of us who've gotten OUT of "normal" shoes have found is that those shoes were, in fact, harmful -- weakening the feet by preventing natural motion and reducing the feedback your brain needs from your foot for effective movement.

      Nobody is saying "wear uncomfortable shoes."
      I'm saying that research shows that what is often sold as "comfortable" (usually, cushioning, padding, motion control, and arch support) is DEMONSTRABLY bad for you, despite how good it may feel when you first put it on.
      Think of it this way: A memory foam mattress feels great. But it's not good for jumping on, or balancing on. A neck brace can make your neck feel better... but wear it too long and your muscles will atrophy causing more problems.
