- Swahili, a Bantu language spoken widely in East Africa, uses a set of specific question words to gather information. These words are fundamental for forming questions and are crucial for effective communication in Swahili. Here’s an overview of the main question words:
Nani - "Who": This word is used to inquire about a person’s identity. For example, "Nani anakuja?" means "Who is coming?"
Nini - "What": Used to ask for information about something. For instance, "Nini kinachoendelea?" translates to "What is happening?"
Wapi - "Where": This word is used to ask about a location. For example, "Wapi unapoishi?" means "Where do you live?"
Lini - "When": Used to inquire about time or a specific moment. For instance, "Lini tutakutana?" means "When will we meet?"
Je - "Do/Does" (used at the beginning of a yes/no question): It’s a prefix used to transform a statement into a question. For example, "Je, unapenda chai?" means "Do you like tea?"
Kwanini - "Why": This word seeks reasons or explanations. For example, "Kwanini umekasirika?" means "Why are you angry?"
Gani - "Which": Used to specify among options. For example, "Kitabu gani unachotaka?" means "Which book do you want?"
Muda - "How long": To inquire about the duration of an event or situation. For example, "Muda gani itachukua?" means "How long will it take?"
