  • Our friend Marcel James reviewed the new hot-rodded upgrade to Antelope's popular Discrete 4 audio interface. The Discrete 4 Synergy Core gives you dual DSP chips plus an FPGA processor working in harmony to run Antelope's expansive library of effects, as well as 3rd-party effects joining the Synergy Core platform. The Antelope Audio Discrete 4 Synergy Core interface offers 4 console-grade discrete mic preamps, 14 total inputs and 16 outputs, renowned Antelope digital clocking, and both Thunderbolt and USB connectivity for your Mac or PC. Best of all, the Discrete 4 Synergy Core comes with $3,000+ (worth) of Antelope's top effects plug-ins included free, so you can record, monitor, mix, and master your projects with world-class sound from start to finish.
    Key Features:
    Synergy Core - New Milestone Technology & Future-proof FX processing platform
    Best-in-class AD/DA conversion with 121 dB dynamic range
    36 Synergy Core effects plug-ins included -- a $3,000+ value
    Sub-millisecond round-trip latency
    Antelope clocking technology on board with Word Clock output to keep your studio in sync
    Desktop USB/Thunderbolt audio interface with 4 console-grade mic preamps
    4 XLR-1/4" combi inputs for mic/line/instrument sources
    L/R Monitor TRS 1/4" line outputs plus 4 TRS 1/4" line outs
    Expandable via S/PDIF and ADAT
    35 effects expansions available separately, including AFX2DAW Bridge
    All effects can be automated in DAW without CPU load, thanks to AFX2DAW Bridge (Mac only)
    Hand-built in a road-worthy metal case
    Synergy Core Processing: Future-Proof Your DAW
    Under the hood, the Discrete 4 Synergy Core is loaded with twin DSP chips plus an FPGA processor that work together to run Antelope Audio's vast collection of vintage-inspired effects plug-ins -- without sapping power from your host Mac or PC. Synergy Core increases your recording rig's stability by offloading audio effects processing to your Discrete interface's dedicated chips. Adding the Discrete 4 Synergy Core to your system means your DAW can make more efficient use of available CPU power - extending the life cycle of your existing Mac or PC, so you don't have to upgrade to a latest-spec computer just to run all your favorite plug-ins. With Antelope effects running on Antelope hardware, your system is optimized right out of the box - allowing you to shorten your audio buffer size, reduce latency, eliminate clicks and pops, and free up your host computer to run CPU-heavy VST synths, samplers, and native time-based effects.
    1 FPGA + 2 DSP = More Effects, More Variety
    Antelope Audio's industry-leading FPGA audio processing platform gives you lower latency in effects chains, allowing you to stack effects while adding mere microseconds, not milliseconds, to your signal. The Discrete 4 Synergy Core fuses both FPGA + DSP chips in one Antelope audio interface, harnessing the parallel processing power of FPGA alongside the latest-generation state-of-the-art ARM DSP chips developed for cloud computing and mobile tech - processors that deliver a faster clock rate than other DSP chips used in the audio interface market. This exclusive hybrid architecture offers computing power synergies unique to Antelope Audio, greatly expanding the variety of Antelope effects that can be developed -- including time-based delays, choruses, flangers, and beyond. Your Discrete 4 Synergy Core arrives loaded with 36 Antelope FX included free - classic compressors, studio EQs, must-have reverbs, tube guitar amp models based on iconic vintage gear - and all the processing power you need to run them!
    Uncompromising Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Conversion Quality
    A-to-D and D-to-A converters are at the heart of every DAW-based audio recording and playback system - and your converters can make or break your studio. That's why the Antelope Audio Discrete 4 Synergy Core is loaded with proven, best-in-class AD/DA with 121 dB of dynamic range on the analog inputs and monitor outputs - so you can capture and monitor your sound with Antelope clarity at up to 192 kHz/24-bit resolution.

    Please don't call this a review, it's an advert. To pretend otherwise is deceptive.

    • @monomono

      i mean, its made by antelope lol. I dont think they meant otherwise

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic 4 года назад +3

      @@monomono then they shouldn't present it as a review from a 3rd party, he says 'they' not 'we' when referring to Antelope, despite having worked for them and sounds like he's reading a press release. From the comments and likes I'm not the only one that thinks a review should be independent and transparent. I occasionally do product reviews myself but I think you have to be very clear about your relationship with the company.

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic 3 года назад +1

      @Wayne Brown I'm well aware, I often review products from audio companies myself. My objection is that the 'reviewer' here was employed by Antelope, so the review is unlikely to be balanced.

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic 3 года назад

      @Wayne Brown I'm not screaming anything, the title was edited from review to overview, (likely after mine and others comments). He also says 'my review' in the opening line.
      Sometimes when I review a product the company who makes it will feature it on thier own channels or social media but I always state where a product was given for free or if I have any involvement with that company.

    • @WilliamMorrisMusic
      @WilliamMorrisMusic 3 года назад

      @Wayne Brown it seems you've not read my comment properly so I don't think we can go any further on this.
      I'm sure there are lots of other cases like this one of reviews being presented the wrong way or without transparency, I've said the same thing about RME when they did it.
      If you don't mind being mislead then that's fine but myself and everyone who has agreed with my comments prefer things to be more transparent.

    Nice review. This interface seems to be very good. You presented it most professionally. I really like how solidly built and good looking Antelopes interfaces are and the spec's of course. Just still concerned regarding what I've been hearing for a while regarding their Product Support. I really hope they have changed in that aspect. Customers want and expect many years of Updates and Support for their chosen Interface's. Antelope, I've read and heard Great reviews and opinions on how good and great your interfaces sound.

    This would be more believable if you gave out the device to someone not affiliated with the company. This is just an advertising, the marketing material read from the monitor. Give it to Sonicstate or someone who would actually put it through its paces and has an actual reputation as a reviewer.

    The Discrete 4 SC is AMAZING. Coming from a MOTU I’ve had for a while the 4Pre it is totally worth the investment. I was surprised. There is a learning curve when it comes to routing on PC but I like learning 😉The raw sound quality is totally noticeable instantaneously. I couldn’t believe it man great great interface. I was stuck trying to choose between this the Audient ID44 and the Arturia Audiofuse. Totally glad I pulled the trigger on this bad boy. Many thx!!!

    So, in 2021, does this still hold up to the new zen go or zen tour or even beat them in certain areas? Also, mixing in post. I know you have real time plugins, but what about when you record dry, and mix in the box after recording post production mixing. Are the plug ins on your computer like any other plug in, so you can tweak and mix, or do you have to use like a hardware insert and print to track, meaning no tweaking after the fact.

      The Discrete and Zen devices are separate lines with a different form factor and different features. The Discrete 4 SC has 4 combo mic pres, 4 line outs and 4 headphone outs, as well as ADAT, S/PDIF and word clock connectivity. They also differ slightly in terms of conversion - all of this information is available on our website.
      In terms of effects workflow, they do differ only in the design of the control panel. The technology is the same and yes, as the processing takes place in real-time in the actual interface, you do need to print the audio into your DAW.
      Hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to reach out to our technical support team if you have any further questions. Our support is available 21 hours a day during the business week and would be more than happy to assist - support.antelopeaudio.com

    I see this examples are shown on Mac OS and seems to work perfect. As it should.
    Its a pity on Windows with usb connection sometimes there are problems like pops and cracklings.
    With Thunderbolt in Windows you need to workaround with a virtual mixer in order to detect the interface...
    All in all I think this device is more recommended for Apple users.

      The drivers are usually finicky with windows. You can still use the AFX like a hardware insert though as long as you use whatever the I/O plugin is in your DAW and use the routing matrix for that

    Why not USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 or only USB 3.1 Gen 2 type C?
    USB 3.1 Gen 2 type C is fully compatible with thunderbolt 3 and is more than enough for every audio interface!

      Usb 2 and 3.1 C gen2 have no latency difference thats why they dont bother , and thunderbolt 2 is the same speed as gen 2 but then again not the same operation . The thunderbolt 2 port offers more bandwitdth and allows to use afx2daw on mac
