Bob Knight’s team just won a national championship, undefeated, in a runaway, and he looks like his team just won an early December non-conference game. No celebration. This game is already in the rear view mirror. Next game.
In 1972 the Miami Dolphins had a perfect season and won the championship In 1976 the Indiana Hoosiers had a perfect season and won the championship Again in 1976 the Cincinnati Reds had a perfect postseason and won the championship And then no team would ever pull off anything perfect ever again for the next 46 years. 85 Bears just missed 98 Broncos were close 07 Patriots just needed to win the Super Bowl against a weaker opponent 09 Colts tanked away the Jets game because they were so scared Peyton might get hurt 01 Lakers missed perfect postseason by 1 game 16 Warriors weren't going for perfection, just to finish off a wins record with a title, failed by 1 game 17 Warriors were 1 win away from a perfect postseason, couldn't do it 15 Kentucky couldn't finish perfect season in the final 4 2021 Gonzaga lost perfect season in the finals 96 Bulls, 98 Yankees, not perfect but best they could have possibly been. A tip of the cap to them.
Without their best athlete, an 18 point win over the quickest team in the nation. No other championship was ever won under such an adverse situation. IU had to improvise a whole new system.
I read somewhere a michigan player said Indiana was a bunch a wide bodies. Took a lot of effort to move them and get around them. He thought michigan had more skill.
@@davidr5961 That's on RUclips. But Walton's performance wasn't that good. Even he wrote that it was not his top game. If you add up goal tending calls, an illegal dunk and his accidently knocking a Memphis miss back in the basket (yes, he did that), he was 21 for 26. Still spectacular totals, but all 3 Memphis front line players had fouled out in the late going, because of touch foul calls by the refs.
If any of the networks this year were doing this broadcast, we'd know more about the two motormouths than the game, and at 4:00 one of them would say, "Our viewers don't want to see that!" in a voice that means we're all in need of supercilious fools' advice
And the pregame would feature eloquent waxing on the meaning of basketball to these two states, complete with 1920 sepia pictures of farm kids shooting hoops on barn doors while Jim Nance reads from Carl Sandburg.
On this night, Larry was back home working on a hotel cleaning crew, figuring his decision a year and a half earlier to leave IU meant he'd permanently blown his chance to get to the NCAA title game.
I look at Scott May celebrating WILDLY, & think to myself....winning a championship doesn't mean as much to today's kids. Debate me all you want, but it doesn't. The Transfer Portal don't lie; it's all about the player now....not about the name on the front of the jersey.
Very true, obviously this was a different day and time. Also I don’t think migration meant as much. Now when recruiting a coach has to look at the region a kid is from as well. I live in metro Atlanta and you’d be surprised at how many moved here from elsewhere because they feel the gym culture here will prepare a kid for the NBA or NFL(whether realistic or not)
College basketball is irrelevant anymore, due to one-and-done. The absurd salaries for coaches and ADs have everyone looking at young talent as tools for their personal wealth.
Scott May four years earlier was an unknown high school in Sandusky, Ohio who was offered a football scholarship by Michigan and a basketball scholarship by Indiana. He picked IU more or less on a coin toss, then sat out his freshman year to qualify academically. With no fine tuned basketball skills, he came out of this obscurity to work his way up to be the unanimous national Player of the Year and leader of an undefeated national champion in the most competitive year any team ever went undefeated. He had a _lot_ to celebrate wildly that night.
@@michaelleroy9281 I thought Isaah was on this team. Thanks for the clarification. I moved to Indiana from Kentucky right before the start of the seaon. Became a Hoosier and became a Hoosier fan. Make a PILGRAMAGE to "The Hall" every yaer, good season or bad. Love my Hoosiers.
U-M SHOULD NOT HAVE LOST TO GULLY KNIGHT & INDIANA . THE PISTONS SHOULD GO BACK TO FORT WAYNE INDIAQNA WHERE THEY CAMEFROM . WITHOUT THE LIONS & THE PISTONS THIS STATE WOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST .
The voice of Curt Gowdy, the best ever.
Saw it live. IU fan. Michigan showed a lot of heart.
Michigan fan here. The IU team of 75-76 is the greatest team in the history of sports. Any sport. Any level. 'Course I am a little biased.
Stephanie, right on I agree. You made a solid strong comment!
@@stephaniegormley9982greatest coached team ever yeah, skill wise this iu team isn’t in the top 25 teams of all time

This is so cool great vid
This Indiana team is the last team to go undefeated to date.
Correct. But did you know that the 1975 team, one loss team, was .called twice as good as this team?
In 1972 the Miami Dolphins had a perfect season and won the championship
In 1976 the Indiana Hoosiers had a perfect season and won the championship
Again in 1976 the Cincinnati Reds had a perfect postseason and won the championship
And then no team would ever pull off anything perfect ever again for the next 46 years.
85 Bears just missed
98 Broncos were close
07 Patriots just needed to win the Super Bowl against a weaker opponent
09 Colts tanked away the Jets game because they were so scared Peyton might get hurt
01 Lakers missed perfect postseason by 1 game
16 Warriors weren't going for perfection, just to finish off a wins record with a title, failed by 1 game
17 Warriors were 1 win away from a perfect postseason, couldn't do it
15 Kentucky couldn't finish perfect season in the final 4
2021 Gonzaga lost perfect season in the finals
96 Bulls, 98 Yankees, not perfect but best they could have possibly been. A tip of the cap to them.
1979 Indiana State basketball unbeaten season until the championship game against Michigan State
Curt Gowdy was amazing!
Does college football count?
Agree, he did football, baseball.and basketbal!A excellent announcer!
Awesome comment 👏🏾

The three point line didn’t exist in college basketball until 86

I think all of Michigan"s losses that year was to indiana. thats first year conference runner made the tournment.
How about NC State vs. Marquette 1974?
I'd like to see replay of UCLA win, in 73, when Walton went 21-22, from the floor

That game was anti-climatic, as NC State's win over UCLA in the semi round was the most dramatic and historic Final 4 game ever.

I don't think any college team has done that since
Correct
A lot of NBA draft picks here; most had so-so NBA careers. Ricky Green was probably the best
milart12 Not Ricky Green. Quinn Buckner had a pretty good career.

Yeah The 1979 Final vs MSU
Bird enrolled at IU but never played.
