As time moves on the nostalgia and love of the old 8 bits keeps us all enthralled and entertained so much we're in my opinion going through a second wave with these old machines.
New Crash and Zzap mags, new games for all the old systems. New and improved RUclips videos from multiple retro sites like yourself will make sure our hobby never fades away into obscurity.
Fantastic list from back in the day, my number one would be Chuckie Egg, a perfect execution of a game with fantastic playability and physics which is far above all the other versions.

I don’t know why I am interested in the Spectrum as I didn’t own one or play the games.

I look forward to the redone vid since I didn't grow up with a Spectrum, but I find it pretty fascinating with its weird graphics.

Brilliant list of some of the best speccy games around mate, I was thinking of doing a top 20, but its going to take a while to choose from the classics. Just subbed👍🏻

Is it just me who didn't see what all the fuss was about with the Ultimate games?

I think it is because in some things they were ahead of time. Their games from years 83-85 were quite good. Of course later with many great games from other companies they were outshined. It is hard to beat atmosphere of 'Tau Ceti' (I was honored to record RZX for that title) or visual brilliance of Probe Software products.

I think a piece of the puzzle that's missing when we're looking back at the Ultimate games on videos like this was the extremely clever marketing. Once their name had been established with their early games like Jet-Pac and Atic Atac, they created a bit of a "house style" for their next wave of games.
Games like Sabre Wulf, Knight Lore and Underwurlde were priced higher than other games and came in these premium black card boxes, almost like jewelry boxes, with nothing but the name in a classy font and some evocative glossy artwork - and no screen-shots on the back to tell you what the game actually WAS.
It was all designed to create a feeling of having bought something mysterious, high-end, and special. But, yes, looked at in the cold light of day, with all that marketing mystique stripped away, they're just decent little games with prettier-than-average graphics for the time.
I recall being particularly disappointed when, as a kid, I rushed home with their newly-released "Alien 8" game - poring over the artwork and the deliberately vague instructions, wondering what kind of experience awaited me - only to find it was basically a sci-fi re-skin of Knight Lore; a game I hadn't much liked. That was the last time I was drawn in by their mystery-box marketing.

still have yet to venture into Spectrum territory after all this time.. so I love watching your top lists of other systems. I started with Apple II back in the day before the C64... so if you ever want to dip your toe in those waters, I'd love to see your Apple II list! ;)

@@osg-extrabits3152 yep that was great, there's some gems in there, and I actually think its been overlooked as a retro gaming system, it had a quirky charm to it, not unlike the Spectrum itself.

Great list, though I prefer more 'fresh' games. Something from Probe should be definitely there, as well as some of Spanish games and at least one from Pete Cooke.
