WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT'S WORTH IT!!!!! My dad was born in Durango, and I've been on the train many times over the decades. Summer trips, winter trips, you name it. I have a lot of family all over the SW Colorado, and NM area. My Great grandfather and great-great grandparents rode that train in the late 1800's I did the cascade winter train with the actual owner of the train, who happened to be taking the ride, hell of a nice guy, like a kid playing with his trains.
We have loved Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass WV for many years. We went with our parents as kids then we took our kids. They still sell a postcard at their store of a stagecoach they used years ago as an attraction and my husband, at the age of 13, is riding beside the driver! Now he is 63! Thanks for your train video!
There is a train in Central CA that goes from Felton to Santa Cruz. (3 hour tour) It is an awesome train ride through the redwoods and fern groves and drops you right off at the Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk!! It was really fun. There is also another one that is called Redwood Forest Steam Train that takes you up on the top of a nearby mountain. It is a 75 minute ride. Both of these are out of Roaring Camp in Felton, CA. We enjoyed them both!!
Not to be missed along with this train ride is their amazing (and included free) museum. It is just down the path from the depot. It is collection of actual planes, trains, & automobiles. It is owned by the family that owns the train and is one of the most interesting museums I have ever been in.
If your in the neighborhood of Skagway, AK.... ride the railroad going to the Canada boarder. It follows the route that the 1898 gold miners took to get the Klondike. Each person had to carry food and supplies to last the entire trail plus mining supplies. Most miners had to traverse the 'stairway' 2 or more times.
Check out the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway in Chama, NM. Not too far from Durango. It is really scenic, too. (Hint: take the run that goes half way and stops for lunch at the Osier station, and comes back to Chama - Best run, especially with kids!!) Lots of beautiful camping in or near Chama.
In 1969 we drove up Mt Washington on our honeymoon, 50 years later we camped at the bottom in the parking lot for the cog railway and took it to the top through the clouds. It was fantastic both times. Stay safe from Nova Scotia.
Weather is much better in Colorado! I lived in New England many years, and weather for Mt Washington was always iffy. The summit for many years held the world record for wind speeds at 372 km/h. Durango/Silverton can get extreme weather, but its much more predictable!
Ride the Cumbres and Toltec from Chama New Mexico to Antinito Colorado. It is an all day thing, you might want to let Jay Jay get a little older. But if you like scenery and trains it is a must.
The Durango Silverton is the best by far. The California Zephr on AMTRAK runs from Chicago to San Francisco. It is fabulous. Sunsets over the amber waves of grain in the plains Southwest from Chicago. Then, traverse the Rocky Mountains between Denver and Grand Junction through Glenwood Canyon beside a roaring river.
A very short ride is from Utica, NY to Thendara, NY on the Adirondack Railroad. Some excursions are complete with “train robbers” on horses! Our adult children still talk about it from when they were little.
There is a Texas State Railroad in Palestine, TX. It is an old train they used to have a train robbery re-enactment. We did it years ago when our kids were small. They enjoyed it, my husbands back did not enjoy it.
A few years ago while visiting Durango my friend and I took this train ride and we loved it! It was so beautiful and peaceful. We actually took the bus up to Silverton and rode the train down. I recommended this if it's colder that day, because by the afternoon when riding back the sun was out, it was warm comfortable and beautiful. I would love to do this train ride again.
There are so many amazing train rides in Colorado alone! The Georgetown train is really cool because it has unique bridges that loop to go up the steep grade to Silver Plume through the narrow canyon. Right off I 70 in Georgetown. There is a related mine tour, separately, and they have a Santa train in the winter. We haven’t yet done the La Veta train or the one in Leadville. But both of those areas are gorgeous. The train out of Chama New Mexico is also stunning. Pagosa Springs CO is worth a visit down in that area and the road to Chama is gorgeous. So many options! Trains are neat. Rail trails are neat too! The outdoor museum loop around Leadville is worth it! Clockwise! Enjoy your travels and experiences!
I was an electrician on NJ Transit, the headlight is a federal requirement for safety. Most people ignore the multi-ton engine coming at them but notice the headlight when they hear the horn. I went to many a collision where people did not see the train! HUH!!
We went on the Durango “long trip” years ago. It was amazing but we were tired when we returned. We also had boarded our pup and was late getting back. JJ looks just like Hensley when she was little. Love watching you guys.
I am absolutely stunned how conversational JJ is already. I think I felt the same way when Hensley was that age. Time truly has wings. 🦄 Or was that Hensley's unicorn?
The Sugar Pine train south of Yosemite National Park is beautiful. It's a shorter train ride but does include a meal during the summer months. They allow well behaved dogs to ride the train as well. My kids got to panned for real gold too.
The headlights are a requirement by law. Friend and neighbor is a railroad conductor. Our 4 year old grandson would love this. (Also Grandpa) 3 blast means backing up. Learned that from truck drivers backing into the docks at a warehouse I once worked at. I do it backing our Diesel Pusher up even though it has a beeper.
Always wanted to ride those trains. Thanks for taking me along! Loved the million dollar highway. When I drove through it was early morning and in places we were above the clouds. Unforgettable.
oh my heavens I ride amtrak and thru colorado is my favorite part I leave from maryland and have gone all the way to California ... I am in tears watching this ... This has been one of the things I wish that amtrak had open windows as we ride thru oh heavens this is stunning ... Thank you !!!!!!!!!!
Last time I was on this train I was probably close to Hensley's age. What a fun train ride!! I can't wait to take my wife on it. Train whistles... 2 forward 3 reverse 2 long, 1 short.. crossing The headlight is an Federal Railway Admin. (FRA) requirement
Just loved this video! We have never done this train ride so gives us a reason to go back to Colorado! This video was so visually appealing including the shots inside the train of the kids. Great job! You two make me smile tonight.
What a cool train ride it looked amazing, and the drone shots were awesome. Cup refills love that 😍. Thank you for sharing your journey and taking the time to put these vlogs together. Have a great week take care. ❤❤🇬🇧
You need to do the Pikes Peak Cog rail. Starts in Manitou Spring and goes to the top of Pikes Peak. You can see 4-5 states from the summit. Just remember to drink LOTS!!! of water. You don't want to get altitude sickness.
If you go back to Alaska, you have to go on the The White Pass and Yukon Route train! It's a Canadian and U.S. Class III 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge railroad linking the port of Skagway, Alaska, with Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon. Fantastic train trip and very educational.
When I was young....a VERY long time ago...we took the train from Denver to Glenwood Springs in Colorado. EPIC!!! Not sure it's still like that but I have such wonderful memories of the trip.
We have ridden the D&RGW RR four times the full round trip Durango to Silverton and never have tired of it. Made a trip when our two sons were young and again in their teens....always beautiful and different as the seasons change. It has become pricey no doubt but worth it!
You should take the kiddos on the Polar Express through Williams, AZ on the Grand Canyon Railway. I also recommend adding in Bearizona and the Grand Canyon deer farm if you do the trip.
Hensley and JJ are adorable! I have watched every video you have posted almost since the start of your channel, imagine my surprise when I saw you came through my home town and visited The Wild Center!
To be able to ride a train with such history and nostalgia is well worth the money. Our family rode it way back in 1960 when the Denver Rio Grand Western RR was contemplating shutting it down due to operation costs vs revenue. Back then it was still operating as a freight line year round, with special summer passenger excursions.
Thanks for the great video! The drone footage was amazingl You need to take the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seweard, AK. It's an amazing trip and the scenery can't be beat. We've done it 4 times!!!
Back in the 90’s me and a buddy stashed our road bicycles on the train going to Silverton and rode it over there. Then after exploring Silverton we hopped on our bikes an rode them back over the mountain passes and down into Durango. The train finally caught up with us around Hermosa and blew smoke on us at passed by.
There is an amusement park in Blowing rock NC called tweetsie railroad. It was an actual railroad through the mountains of North Carolina. They have a steam engine that takes you through the park with a cowboy and Indian show.
I rode from Durango to Silverton as a teenager and I can't wait to ride it again as an adult. Not too long ago I found an article online about the best vintage train rides in America. I've lost the link but I copied them all to my traveling list. Durango/ Silverton was on it of course.
It's expensive, you get cinders in your eyes, and in general It's AWESOME! I took the one that stops for two hours in Silverton. People come to meet the train, One kid dressed as a gunslinger and he did the whole spinning revolvers thing. In the Saloon where I met lacy Black playing piano, also had bus boys/girls that looked to be 12. I asked about children working and was told, "It's different here." BTW, they all seemed happy and well adjusted.
In 2017 I moved back to MN to care for my senior father I found out he loves trains. He’s a private person and before I figured out his love of trains he made a comment about taking the Darango train ride when we were rving through Colorado, I said I’d never get stuck on something I couldn’t get off when I wanted to so we never took the ride. He is now 92 and I didn’t know about the Duluth train. So thank you! I will make sure we make a special trip there next summer just to ride the train!
Hensley's face at 4:23 mins. She has lost the little girl child face. You can see the beauty she will have as an adult. I laugh every time JJ talks.."I'm so tired" 🤣
Since your in Colorado, you may try the Royal Gorge Railway. It's out of Canon City. Diesel Electric runs along the bottom of Royal Gorge. Right by the river.
There's also the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. A few minutes west from Colorado Springs in the town of Manitou Springs. You guys are great to watch and your children are beautiful. That train ride looks like a blast. We hear so much on youtube go here go there it's hard to even remember the states it's in. Love your videos. Be safe.
That looks like so much fun!! Thanks for taking us all along on the ride!! I miss my kids being young & cuddling- so adorable. Get as much of it as you can 💓
I was literally going to recommend this. I travel from Ohio to West Virginia in the Monongahela National Forest ever year. The scenery from those old logging tracks is amazing.
Last time my wife and i rode the train it started a bunch of fires 🔥 and we had to wait in silverton for about 6 hours. Been on it probably 6 times starting on about 1965. Love it everytime. Don't wear good clothes on the steam train as they may get burn holes in them.
Go to Chana, NM and ride the Cumbres and Toltec train. It is east of Durango and it was another leg of the train when it ran from Antonio, CO to Durango CO.
One of our favorite train rides is the Great Smokey Mountain Railway in Bryson City, NC. When you ride the train it includes entrance to the model railroad museum as well.
We absolutely love the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge steam scenic train ride In the fall, stunning! We have rode the Great Smoky Mountain Scenic Steam train ride. We have also rode Conway New Hampshire Scenic Train ride. We are always looking for a great Scenic train to explore our beautiful country
The Pikes Peak COG was one of the best ever! Don't know if they've opened it up again, as it closed a few years back. It starts in Manitou Springs (just outside of Colorado Springs & goes up to the summit of Pikes Peak.
I took that train ride and spent the night in Silverton and returned on the train the next day. I think it will be around for decades more to come, they had mail stops and pick ups when I rode it.
Btw you do the Polar Express on the Durango Silverton RR it is truly a memorable experience. We took one of our grandkids about 5 years ago and he still talks about it.
I rode the Amtrak coast starlight from LA to Salinas Ca and rode my bicycle back to Southern California along the coast. Beautiful train ride and bike ride!
WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT'S WORTH IT!!!!! My dad was born in Durango, and I've been on the train many times over the decades. Summer trips, winter trips, you name it. Oh wow! That is such a neat story!
Thanks for sharing that history.
Is the train enclosed and heated for the winter train ride?
I’ve been on the Durango-Silverton rail ride twice in my life. As a child and as an adult. It never gets old.
We have loved Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass WV for many years. We went with our parents as kids then we took our kids. They still sell a postcard at their store of a stagecoach they used years ago as an attraction and my husband, at the age of 13, is riding beside the driver! Now he is 63! I loved Marissa"s face, when you said. " We did bring lunch ?' That was priceless.
😂😂😂, we love our food!

Absolutely beautiful.

Durango / Silverton #1 of course but the Cumbres and Toltec from Chama NM to Antonito Colorado (Do it that way) not far behind.
There is a Texas State Railroad in Palestine, TX. It is an old train they used to have a train robbery re-enactment. We did it years ago when our kids were small. They enjoyed it, my husbands back did not enjoy it.
Y’all need to do the cog railway in Colorado Springs We have done it 2 times. They just reopened.
I would love to do that one! Glad to hear it is reopened!

Strasburg Scenic Railroad in Strasburg, PA and the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad in Bryson City, NC are two of my favorites.
At 12:27, that's a Ponderosa Pine. They smell amazing.
The headlights are a requirement by law. Friend and neighbor is a railroad conductor. Our 4 year old grandson would love this. (Also Grandpa) 3 blast means backing up. Favorite Train Rides
Kuranda Scenic Railway - Queensland, Australia
Alaska Railroad - Talkeetna, Alaska
Agawa Canyon - Saulte St Marie, Ontario
These sound amazing!
Wow, what a super fun experience for your family and I just love how your zest for life comes through and brings joy and inspiration to others.
We went on the Georgetown loop over the royal gorge in Colorado a couple years ago we loved it
Always wanted to ride those trains. Thanks for taking me along! Loved the million dollar highway. When I drove through it was early morning and in places we were above the clouds. Unforgettable.

U guys can travel to Canada too, borders are open and Banff is a good place to be.
The views from that train are absolutely breathtaking! The whole route we kept saying ooooooh ahhhhh. Ooooooo. Ahhhhhh. Ooooooo ahhhh!

We enjoyed the Chama, New Mexico - Antonito, Colorado train also.
You need to try out the Heber Creeper in Heber, UT

Sleepy / Cuddly theory: the rhythm of the steam pistons is a nice multiple (or harmonic) of the kiddo's heart beat.
🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ I like trains! 🚂🚂🚂

The train between Georgetown and Silver Plume was a good one. It’s a nice short one for people worried about their kids.
My wife an I went on the Durango to Silverton Ride. What a Beautiful trip would love to do it again.
Another great video! Scenery was breathtaking! Thanks again!
Thanks for the great video! The drone footage was amazingl

I need to look up that list. Love train rides!
Definitely on our to do list now thanks for sharing! So glad your comments are back!
Hope you enjoy it!
Royal Gorge Train in Canon City, Colorado. Runs along Arkansas River under Royal Gorge Bridge.
It's expensive, you get cinders in your eyes, and in general It's AWESOME! I took the one that stops for two hours in Silverton. The cog railroad in Pikes peak is awesome!!!
Fave: the Leadville, CO train to the top. Winding around and up to the top of the mountain. It’s a really old train.
Duluth Minnesota has a fun train museum and a fun ride we’ve done a few times. I believe there is one in Oregon that also has a polar express as well.
Love Durango, Silverton and “The Train”😎
Expensive!!!
took steam train rides with dad. best memories. god bless you guys
As a Coloradan, I’m now officially mad and jealous. We take it for granted. Great stuff you jealous Volunteers!
We just road the COG in New Hampshire this past August, inspired by your video. Fun trip! Thank you!
Fun! Isn’t it amazing???? We love that ride.
There's also the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. A few minutes west from Colorado Springs in the town of Manitou Springs. Very scenic area there Manitou Springs, and the railway just reopened after getting some upgrades/repairs.
Also, I live in Albuquerque and wanted to say I'm glad you enjoyed your stay for Balloon Fiesta. I crew for a hot air balloon and always enjoy hearing about folks having a good time doing what I do almost every weekend.
That was a fun video. Marissa has the "The Far Country" vibe going.
We rode the cog up Mount Washington in NH a couple of weeks ago. I loved it so much. I’ll definitely do it again.
I can’t believe you can capture drone footage … more specifically, you get a drone to return to you in a moving train.
Beautiful artistry
My favorite train ride is the "Polar Express". WOOOOOOOOOOO. Great video y'all.
The Pikes Peak cog railway in Colorado Springs is pretty cool too.
This is on our list!
They turn you on a "Y" at Cascade Canyon....I am a retired locomotive engineer....all the signals do have different meanings. In modern day railroading they are not used as much as everyone has battery powered radio pack sets....verbal communication has taken place of hand and whistle signals.
Everybody love’s trains, great video guy’s. Love watching.
You guys are great to watch and your children are beautiful. That train ride looks like a blast. We hear so much on youtube go here go there it's hard to even remember the states it's in. Love your videos. Be safe.
It helps to take notes when you hear of a cool place you want to revisit. 😀
My favorite is the White Pass Railroad that leaves from Skagway, AK and travels up into the Yukon.
That looks like so much fun!! Thanks for taking us all along on the ride!! I miss my kids being young & cuddling- so adorable. Get as much of it as you can 💓
You are so welcome!
You would like the Cass Scenic Railway in Cass, WV. They use a Shay locomotive to travel to the third highest peak in WV, Bald Knob.
I was literally going to recommend this. I travel from Ohio to West Virginia in the Monongahela National Forest ever year. The scenery from those old logging tracks is amazing.
@@timothybockhoff1075 doesn’t compare to the Rockies out west tho !! 💯
Love that steam whistle sounds amazing. They have to blow at railroad crossings.
The color of the water is crazy, almost like Caribbean blue. Woah. How did you manage to get the drone back into the train.
The drone footage was from the ground.
@@LessJunkMoreJourney lol. I guess that would make more sense
@@dawnvierra4063 I was thinking the same thing.
Last time my wife and i rode the train it started a bunch of fires 🔥 and we had to wait in silverton for about 6 hours.

We absolutely love the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge steam scenic train ride
In the fall, stunning! We have rode the Great Smoky Mountain Scenic Steam train ride. We have also rode Conway New Hampshire Scenic Train ride. We are always looking for a great Scenic train to explore our beautiful country
We agree!
I think the Pikes Peak cog railway is up and running again.
Looks amazing! The ride from Anchorage to Seward is gorgeous! And the ride over Hurricane Gulch in the winter (also Alaska) is incredible too.
The transition from the turning train car to Marissas face was really good. Well done. 6:44
Thank you.
During summer, the local tubers and floaters going down the river will “bare all” making for quite a show!
😂
I LOVE GOING THROUGH THE ASPEN FORREST... I WENT 40 YRS AGO
Another great adventure....thank you for taking us along
The train ride looked epic.
