The proverb of the time was "Fortress besieged by Vauban, fortress taken. Fortress built by Vauban, fortress impregnable". Many people also forget his writings on agricultural yields, animal husbandry, how a farm should operate with maximum efficiency, the guy was a practically universal genius.
I feel such pride hearing this man's achievements even though I have no connection to him. Even though this video states that he wasn't given enough post-mortem honors, I think that it's best to reward people while they're still alive anyways- and to that end, I'm happy that he was honored with the title of Marshal of France, and also that the King was a fan of his book. Altogether, I think this guy must have had a very fulfilling life. Good for him! :-)
Its amazing how they can get the stuff up there, you should have a look at some Indian castles on top of rocks with sheer cliffs with only rough cut dangerous steps into the mountain the only way up
at some point in history, french government told the local people to cut down all castles by one or two thirds. that worked wonders.... I read about this at Cheateau Gaillard, an amazing castle from earlier medieval times.
The city I hail from called Menen, 20 kilometres north of Lille was fortified in 1666 by Vauban. I was always taught that those fortifications where his real masterpiece
@@naradaianWRONG it's actually because this is an upload of a TV program. As always the French boast on what they did and pretend to be the first ones. In this case these sort of fortresses were already used by the Italians and the Dutch, long before they even heard of them in France. It were the Italians who were the first inventors of these forts, already in the early 14-hundreds. The same goes for using water as a defense weapon, the Dutch we’re already using this mean of defense 200 /to 300 years before Vauban !!
Castles used moats well before 300 years, as water as defense is not only a Dutch thing at all... the rest of your post is on the same vein with little more than the clasical nationalistic offended mind ... maybe you should read a little more, yes many things were ''before'' that, but Vauban was by far the best military engineer of his time, with Van Coehoorn on that list, that doesn't mean at all he invented everything. But very few did so many siege and a the same time the scale (and the number) of the fortifications he designed, plus great thinking in military logistics... Star forts of his time were on much larger scale and with much more complexity that the ones of the 15th century in Italy...did you even see the vid ?
If you would have watched the video, you would know that it is mentioned from the beginning that the star fortress was invented a century before Vauban. And if you had just an once of knowledge on the subject, you would know that Vauban developed it to its pinnacle and was considered by all nations of Europe at that time, the model to follow.
lol.....Jacques Cartier and Samuel Champlain choose to erect they camp at a base of hill in Quebec losing it twice....once it 10 min no the french where bad at military but one italian....

The key is/was REPURPOSE. I suggest existing foundations; from "star fort" designs.
Nice to see a military leader more concerned with his soldiers than his accolades

The video also ended with a really great musical score which was a bit surprising.
Damn, when you think about it, this guy was such a freaking genius

I was visiting France, its a shame how a lot of the forts falling appart.

the amount of thinking he obviously did is incredibly daunting. I would have run out of energy so fast
AMAZING
These are the starforts the folks who believe in the empire of Tartaria are convinced as being from a previous civilization.
He was comparable to Da Vinci only that his drawings were blueprints not paintings. A modern Renaissance man.
Excellent

One time ago. Many positive with forceful happiness. Stone with fortress make big success journey.
He brilliantly, masterfully, used his MATHBRAIN to see that a fortress on a hill was a good idea.
20 secs in and im looking at subs........... WOOT why you have so few!!
Ai channel read by a BOT pretending its a person - usual reason for disinterest

As usual a textbook example of the Dunning-Kruger effect gracing the comments section 😅
Casltes? 😅
Too bad the AI voice and CC wasn't able to pronounce Vauban's name properly.
