I've lost at least 2 games I can distinctly remember to Runick banishing my most important cards. One time I activated Double evolution pill and my opponent chained Destruction banishing exactly every single target I had in my deck. There's probably many more examples but none are quite as vivid memories.

Almost every Runick player I've spoken too agrees the engine would be more fun to play against and not really less fun to play if they just didn't banish.

@@Xeroxthebeautifulwhile I agree with the sentiment I have to ask what becomes pure runick’s win condition if they lose the banishing? Remember archetypes should be able to stand on their own and have a win condition, do you think it would’ve been better for them to be designed as they are now without the banishing but also no bp lock? If you are still itimidated by floo after all the nerfing it got, then sorry but it might be a skill issue. They take very little time in their turn, they literally just summon 3 mons to get to Empen (rarely extend) and that's it. So taking some time from their opponent's turn as well is probably necessary to get even with times. There are not much frustrating things left within the deck anymore....Empen allows the opponent to use its effects as normal, only locks link mons, the birdies can be stopped with a simple imperm or ash and completely ruin their day because they are not allowed to special summon like ALL the other decks do, so if anything, they are in the disadvantage, not their opponent.

Every runick is opt. Just saying. Its a good deck but comes with alot of drawbacks. Obviously no bp means you can either otk or control. The deck dies when fountain gets ashed and/or removed. Just because hugin protects doesnt make it op.
Also for draw 3 you need 3 different runicks + fountain obviously and also have 3 applications. If runick goes first its barely possible to draw more than 1 card.
Control will always be annoying in a way but at least runick is a trade 1 for 1 deck and heavily relies on fountain to win you the ressource game. The engine is so big that you can only play small non engine.
That being said, floodgates are ridiculous but that has nothing to do with runick.

I can't think of a way to address the generic usability of Runick to cycle through your deck in ways that isn't pretty convoluted (such as all Runick monsters having the effect that a monster made with them as material or tribute would inherit, stating that it cannot activate its effects; or maybe is just returned to the deck immediately).
Then again, limiting the archetype like that also kind of sucks.

Why? They have an archetypal continuous spell, they aren't going to shove in anti synergy within the same archetype just to kill off Runick stun. @@FakeHeroFang Good point.
My other suggestion, to limit your handsize during your opponent's End phase, is also hurting the archetype itself in a similar fashion.
I've come to appreciate Fountain as an advantage generator of the kind that any backrow reliant deck needs to keep up with decks that make their plays with monsters.
However, the splashability of this archetype is quite a conundrum of card design: on one hand, you want players to be able to do their own thing with this; on the other hand, the most competitive strategy is to not bother playing it as a mill deck and just use it for bodies and to cycle through the deck.

My biggest issue with runick is that it does not feel good to go against. It feels like every time you play a card, you banish 4 cards for cost and the said card gets negated or destroyed anyway. But also you can't focus on what your opponent has on field as all your interaction and destruction/banish type cards go towards fountain instead.
Obviously runick for me isn't the worst designed deck in the game (that goes to timelords for me) but I just don't like to go up against any form of runick.

Yu-Gi-Oh players hate any alternative playstyle being remotely successful. People will tolerate a combo deck being chipped away at on a banlist for a year but if a stun, burn or deckout deck is remotely playable everyone advocates for it's immediate termination

Runick is probably my favorite deck overall in the last few years. I live for corner strategies, and Runicks deck-out base concept with a mill that is vaguely modernized was something i was wanting for ages, even as just a deck-out archetype. the banishing at first sounds like it's to much, but it makes the deck lose out in matchups you may not see coming, while being valuable in other matchups since so many decks use the grave as an extension now. i liked the battle phase lockout because it forced me to play without it as something i could resort to to control the board state, and to seek to minimize that weakness, usually with deep draw, or old school attack stall.
What i didn't care for was turning it into an engine for other decks. give me the struggle of trying to stall my way to a deck out with the deck designed for it instead of turning another non-monster heavy deck into more combo pieces. theres plenty of times i tried and failed to win like this because of modern yugiohs tempo and the opponent just overunning me. if i want to play combo and swing for life points, theres untold decks that do that.

@@kiranearitachi that is turning into a more common design in the game. and playing Runick the way i wanted to felt like full on deck-out blue from MTG. especially when against it i began to recognize that deck out in this game is usually an uphill battle, as often as players of this game joke about turn 4 and beyond being a near mythical thing. I liken each card banished to often being just cards you would have never seen if you played a standard deck. I believe thats the same logic people used to argue pot of desires's cost as well worth it.
Its also interesting during the video here that they don't discern the difference between a card banished face up vs face down, when i lost a duel that came down to the wire recently due to a card that upon destruction recursed a banished card i had done far earlier in the duel, allowing my opponent what they needed to win against my Runick Muskets during the monster event.

Ok so in my opinion runick has issues that follow suite:
    1. Fountain is an insane card yes, the ability to draw 3 is strong especially in different variants as they often draw more runick cards and in engine pieces to keep extending. Also getting rid of fountain should be as easy cosmic cyclone but the reality is people often stop playing those cards, instant back row removal is not easy to come by and really not that searchable. If the opponent let you clear the fountain at all they probably didnt have anything to begin with. But the deck also needs it to survive so it being at 1 is a good idea imo.
    2. The deck banishing while it does not instantly win you the game, does this really fucked up thing of screwing over people's grind game, just because you have not seen it does not mean it's not a common thing, "absence of proof is not proof of absence", often not crucial peices in the moment but later in the match you realize you run out of a tech piece or a search target and it makes maneuvering some games harder. IT does however start off slow and then picks up later on especially cus they run a card like storm.
    3. Also the battle phase restriction imo is like as weak a restriction as it is the cost of revealing a Wyrm in hand.
You can keep the extenders tbh, but if fountain and tip were at 1 maybe even hugin and the deck did not banish off the top then id literally have no issue, its just a pile of inconveniece, cant remember a time i cued up against runick and thought "this is going to be a fun interactive back and forth"

Many games people stuck all the way until they had no deck, and if they quit, they quit because they could see where the game is going. Only faster combos variants of the deck changed that with time. If you are gonna argue Runick was not supposed to be played with floodgates to deckout, the game has to be a lot slower for it to work properly, except if the game is slower, then 2-3 Runick cards a turn that stop your opponent's plays, that's still de facto floodgating your opponent, stopping him from playing, from using his cards.

Runick cards actually let you play the game in that style, which I enjoy. Floodgates and annoying combo-decks which take forever and end on insane boards are what's toxic about the game.
