- The Rentals - Mrs. Young (early That's Incredible! demo)
That's Incredible! was the name of the very first incarnation of The Rentals, the moog synthesizer-based Modern Rock band led by former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp. Recorded by Tom Grimley at his studio Poop Alley in L.A. in April 1994 (a month prior to the first Weezer album hitting stores), the 'That's Incredible!' demos form the basis of what would become the first Rentals album 'Return Of The Rentals' in 1995.
The line-up of 'That's Incredible!' consisted of Sharp (vocals, bass and lead guitar), Weezer bandmate Patrick Wilson (drums), That Dog's Rachel Haden (female vocals) and Supersport 2000's Rod Cervera (rhythm guitar). Out of this line-up, only Sharp and Cervera would become part of The Rentals, as other commitments prevented Haden and Wilson from becoming full-time participants in what would become a more time-consuming project for Sharp once signed to Maverick Records in early 1995.
Fun fact: "Mrs. Young" was written as a tribute to Weezer's lawyer Jamie Young and a Weezer recorded version of the song was intended to be the b-side to a planned 7" single release of Weezer recording "Jamie" (also an ode to the attorney). For whatever reason, that single never materialized and the A-side "Jamie" was instead given to the 1994 Geffen outtakes compilation "DGC Rarities, Volume 1" with the Weezer version of "Mrs. Young" remaining unreleased to this day. Parts of the song were later used in "Please Let That Be You" on the Rentals debut album "Return Of The Rentals" (Maverick Records, 1995).
Wow, in this incarnation, it's like a Weezer/that dog/Supersport 2000 supergroup. It's all just so perfect.
been listening to every version of this song for many months now lol, no plans on stopping.
If I ever had a band they would sound like this.
i dont think so man, youd be lucky to sound like this.
You can.
Buy every guitarist a fuzz pedal (including the bass player (especially the bass player)) and listen to a lot of beach boys
Better than the album version. I love these lyrics and how they are different.
its like the original weezer version. my favorite btw.
@@happyhapsly they kinda messed it up when you compare the studio album to the demo
For me it's the opposite. Weezer already have a song about Jamie (called "Jamie") and I really like the space-themed lost in technology lyrics of Return Of The Rentals.
Too fucking good!!!! Just learned about this after being a longtime Weezer/ Rental's fan thanks OP!
dem guitar tones...
so fucking good
It’s good to hear the demos finally of the album that made me start writing my own songs way back when.
Am I getting my weezer lore wrong here or was Jamie Young their lawyer?
She was. "the song was written for my old attorney and all the new found sense of confidence and security she instilled in me and the lads." - Matt Sharp
where is this recording from?
