You're so on point about the protests, and the opportunity costs, especially with environmental issues, and garbage. Its sad to see people keep falling for more of these smaller (somewhat symbolic) gestures that don't really address the core problems and almost play directly into the hands of bigger corporations that want to shift the responsibility on individual consumers. Over here, we keep hearing some say "Protesting is fine, but it shouldn't really inconvenience the public", and like, how do people expect a protest to win anything if it has no bearing on anyone around it? q.q
Sounds like you might be in the UK - appreciate you might not want to confirm that but I am and we're hearing that about not inconveniencing the public. Such a daft sentiment, it's literally the point of a protest, to inconvenience people. I also agree about shifting responsibility to consumers - we hear that in particular about recycling. I mean, of course we should be doing it, but my annual waste doesn't come close to most large corporations' daily waste - it's their actions that will actually make or break a successful recycling effort, not mine.
@inmuyataz It would, I'm sure, but it would almost certainly be criminal, making it less useful as a form of protest - both because people are less likely to do it (and substantially less likely to do it twice), and because regardless of your feelings about private jets, it's just generally harder to justify damaging someone else's property. It's also about spin - the protests that are complained about as disruptive in UK media, that we're all supposed to think of as inconvenient are actually not that inconvenient for the vast majority of the UK population. Our government would just like us to think of them as such.
@@youalldisgustme yeah i missed your point, there's also a certain protest in my country that's actually not that big of an issue but people just got herded like a sheep
I love the change, but I think It should also gain temporary charges from heroes when not activated. Just the same as creeps is fine, but as it is right now, it's pointless to kill heroes while not activated.
The problem is if they set strike duration indefinite reddit admins will remove the mods and forcefully reopen it. Also, a lot more subs will decide to not strike if the strike period is too long
Or people you create new subs, they actually hold very little power, thats the problem, protest only work if you have power to leverage, having that said maybe more than a few days could wield better results.
yea i can see how this protest will be just minor inconvenience for them and it will not manage to do anything, also I can confirm of what you where saying about people just not carrying after few weeks when something happens, I for example quit wow classic for like 2-3 months but went back when the next phase came out
several of my main(LARGE) subreddits are staying dark till something changes, and the communities are simply using other forms of communication--looking at you, multiple-hundred-thousand-user discord servers!
The crazy thing that reddit did was just, "Ok so now users can vote out mods." As if this won't just end up being a way for reddit to remove mods by way of fake accounts. With the IPO coming, this is obviously a power grab. I'm hoping that a reddit alternative appears.
Lol. Baumi making a disclaimer that he talks all video about a topic when we all know that we haven't played Dota in years and PREFER to just come and hear Baumi talk about interesting stuff going on in the world
At the time the video was recorded, it wasn't going to be extended. Even now, most of the sub-reddits have come back up instead of continuing to protest. Though a decent portion is still down.
To be honest the Blitzchung thing was stupid and unnecessary anyways. Blizzard clearly state that politics are not welcome at their tournaments, break the rules and you are punished, it doesn't matter what specifically happened. Hell, I am actually on Blizzards side there, they showed that there are no exceptions which to me is exactly as it should be. As for the Reddit thing: Either hit full throttle or do nothing. A half assed protest will not change anything. The users are already pissed about the black out, so you might aswell keep it going until everything is resolved.
Whenever someone says they dont like/allow "political" statments, what they mean is they dont like political statements that disagree with them. Plus people were mad at the rule blizzard has, they are allowed to have any rule they want, but people are allowed to disagree and boycot the company. I think the boycots actually had more teeth than baumi makes it seem as well, blizzard apologized and went back somewhat in their punishment of the player.
When you said the Reddit blackout was a "very American kind of protest" i knew you were gearing up to critique the shit out of it lol. As one of the casual reddit users, I didn't notice the blackout happened, only noticed subs announcing the end of the blackout. The fact that r/stupidfood went dark had no impact on my experience or usage.
with the reddit stuff I really don't care for the protestors, my literal last use for reddit was me trying to figure out what thehighest possible damage weapon I could make in Legend of Zelda TOTK but was super confused when the reddit blocked me out I also find that people who make reddit their life are very weird creepy people
Apps that use reddits api actually cost it money + the biggest apps that are just reddit but more convenient get rid of reddit apps and push their own.
Tbh, that whole Reddit is kinda wack. Every social media currently somehow tries to fuck themselves over. I don’t use any SM any more than once a week tbh, but I don’t believe that unpaid moderators will pay for their tools. Quite a few probably will, but with some of the biggest subreddits I don’t see them using tools provided by a company, that is too stupid to make an app for users to interact with their content. I use Reddit every once in a while. Some specific communities just know the answers to questions I seek and I know these people are more knowledgeable than I am about these topics. Just from that small sample size of uses I can attest that the official app is hideous enough and become worse btw, that this probably isn’t a good change in the slightest, even if they think it is. But who knows. Reddit is a weird company and at this point I’m confident enough in my abilities to say I have no clue where all of this is going. But as someone working in IT, I abhor the decision to take the API access away. Just the long term risk would make that project go up in flames before it ever went live or even into the overview of costs stage. Then again. German companies care a lot more about risk In my experience than US firms. So it might just be a different mindset. Anyways, these ramblings are long enough now. Have a nice day reading this. And good nerves. We can use those.
I mean yeah, when you said it was opportunity cost you hit the nail directly on the head. It's not about whether or not the thing done was good, it's the fact that it was a total waste compared to what it could have been. All the effects it had have functionally be undone in comparitively no time at all and now the moment of fervor and passion is past and the odds of ever being able to rally that much support again is practically nil. Its like if someone handed you a million bucks and you spent it all on candy bars, when you could have spent it on a small candy bar making machine and a large supply of cocoa, milk, and sugar for several times more candy bars overall.
Team Seas could have instead funded the creation and deployment of trash processing devices and facilities which could theoretically make money from recycling trash and keep themselves going for a really long time and potentially lead to some major industry changes. Team Trees could have funded the creation of tree farms which are not only known to work, be money positive, etc. but also lower the amount of deforestation that needs to be done to supply wood and thus prevents trees from being cut down in addition to creating trees themselves. I firmly believe in the prospect of a sustainable artificial forest- even naturally occurring wildlife has been proven to be perfectly capable of surviving in that kind of forest, just moving along with the trees.
So I am still boycotting Blizzard from the same exact incident that you spoke about. I do enjoy their games however I now play on private servers instead of giving Blizzard any of my money.
i'm a little confused. isnt it kinda the assumption/norm that chat will ask a question that becomes the topic of discussion for the video? like why apologize for this one lol
One of the largest problems with reddit, which is sorta touched on, is the majority of the userbase is a liberal in the american sense. They are fundamentally opposed to strikes and collective action. Symbolic gestures is really all they can do. This is a significant part if why we have a huge fascist movement here in the states right now.
this is why sometimes i dislike rambling baumi, here is a quote from 26:17 from baumi " its not that there is garbage in the ocean, its that we keep dumping garbage in the ocean ,thats the thing that needs to actually be addressed and team seas did nothing in that regard". but baumi THAT is the exact point the teamseas make, they didnt just clean the ocean, they even address it on their website that its just temporary solution until waste management on land improves. even mark rober address this on his video. Come on man, at the very least try to educate yourself before rambling and downplaying movement like that, the people behind it is actually educated people and have work and do research on that topic more that you do. no real hate, just criticizing.
A lot of points he said in his ramble seem very stupid in fact. He is entitled to an opinion, sure. But to listen to a whole video about how he hates everything he doesn't like... and for hypothetical reasons. I don't know team seas or whatever he's talking about. But I'm sure he doesn't know the entire story either, you could tell. In any case, it's sad that any attempt at fixing the sh*thole we live in is met by jealousy and criticism. Very annoying video, smh
I think the point is that the ocean cleaning part was essentially pointless, all funds should have been diverted to waste management instead which might actually have a significant and ongoing impact.
@@jazzy4830 its not pointless, if you watch the mark rober video, you can see that no amount of funds can solve waste management in the country with a political and economical problem, its not easy to change some third world country policy about waste when their economy is bad and their goverment is corrupt,. and if you know that waste in the ocean is not from 1 country, there is a LOT of country that contribute to the problem, so should the teamseas go to every one of those country and fix the problem? of course not, the waste management in every country is an internal problem and global movement like this can only help to provide support externally. money doesnt solve everything, and the most helpfull way to temporarily fix the problem by doing what teamseas are doing, until those country fix their own waste problem.
