Installing a New Door in an Exterior Brick Wall

- I decided that I wanted a side door into my garage, but had no idea how to go about it. As with most of my DIY projects, I searched RUclips for answers and inspiration. I stumbled upon a 4 part series from benoahrenovations ( / benoahrenovations )
which would serve as the inspiration and the step by step guide for my project. His videos were an an exact match for what I needed. They were posted a full 10 years ago, but came in very handy in 2020 for me!
So I set out to see if someone of modest DIY skills could knock a hole in a brick wall, and install an exterior door without the entire garage coming down around me, all entirely by RUclips instruction.

Thank you for the video. I am facing the same project, plus a window install. Seeing the rough opening from the outside was essential to know how wide and tall to open the brick work. The finishing work was helpful too. I an absence of a how to video, you filled that void.

The best way to learn how to line up an exterior door is fighting your way through the motions. Over time you pick little tricks and tips up. Great job
I've done a bunch since then, and yeah you figure it out along the way. I got them all done, but the early ones took much longer 😂

That was a good video thank you I'm planning on cutting a sliding glass door entrance from my deck to my wife's room so she will have a way out and will not have to walk all the way around the house to enjoy the deck.

Doors and windows almost always assume that the wall thickness is 4-9/16". Thats a 2X4 stud, and 1/2" drywall on the inside, and a 1/2" sheathing on the outside. I realize the math doesn't add up, but that's partly because a 2X4 isn't 4" wide for some unknown reason. No matter. The point of my comment is that if you have a thicker wall, then you'll need what is called a "Jamb Extension Kit". The big box stores will have it (in stock usually. Menard's does) so just explain that your wall is thicker than 4-9/16" and they'll set you up. The jamb extension kit includes simple instructions for what to do. Don't let that small issue trip you up. It's not uncommon and easy to remedy.

Because you're an amateur, this 'not too sure' approach is probably the most instructive piece I've seen in a long while. Also kudos for your bravery in filming the whole thing warts and all. How about a step outside to bring up the level of the door jam..

It was all an exercise in proving to myself that many (not all) home reno tasks can be tackled as DIY. Go slow, research lots.

You can get a dust cover on grinders with a dust deputy attached to a vacuum. You should be wearing a mask too as silicosis is a serious health risk from grinding concrete!!!
Yep, lesson learned. I did invest in a good mask near the end of that project that didn't make it on camera. The cheap paper covid masks were useless. No plans on ever ever grinding concrete or brick again haha

Very good job! My question is, how come the brick vertical joints, where you cut it, seem so straight so that you can remove them with relative ease? Usually, the bricks are layered
jagged.
I'm not sure I understand. It was a very normal brick wall in a 50% offset pattern

Great video, but you didn't show the bit I had the biggest question about: How does one person lift a heavy lintel into place without assistance?
It's just a short one, I don't remember it being ridiculously heavy. Just regular heavy 😂

Thanks much appreciated. I don't recall exactly but I seem to recall my reasoning worked something like... Next full mortar line in the brick above the top of where the door would be. I wanted it as close to the door as I could get it because it was going to need to be trimmed from the lintel down to the top of the door and I didn't want a 6" piece of wood to fill the gap above the door. Hope that made sense.
Anytime cutting masonry or concrete grinding, you always try to wet cut or dustless grinder with shop vac. Saves your nose and keeps you in good standards with neighbors.

I'm going to do the same project. Did you originally plan to cut your brick to the same size of the rough opening of the door?
Yeah, on the exterior side I think I added a little to account for some trim. I was winging it at that point haha. But I kept it close to the required rough opening for the door I bought. The opening itself ended up slightly bigger than I had planned and I used some cut particle board to narrow the gap before shimming it. Those videos I linked in the description are gold. Have a look at those 👍

It's been on there 2 1/2 years and looks like the day I installed it.
And that side of the house gets a lot of direct weather. All good
How long did this job take end to end? I want to do it but fast. My HOA will be on my ass if they see me do this.
It took me a full weekend. I was moving cautiously having never done anything quite like this before. It might be hard to be subtle about the cutting of brick part haha. It's loud and messy. After that you could throw the door in and take your time on the inside and trimming out the outside. I suppose much of the activity could be completed from inside and away from prying eyes. Good luck if you go ahead with it. We use the door multiple times a day now, it's become our primary entrance.
Anytime you have wood meeting concrete or brick, you need to use pressure treated lumber. In no time your wood trim will rot. Aside from that, you did a great job.
Hahahaha , you realize painted wood trim has been used in exterior window and door applications for centuries, do some research

What do I attach the door to if there is no drywall or studs? It is an old brick garage, the brick walls are about a foot thick and the brick is visible inside the garage as well--no drywall or studs.
I'm no professional installer, I made it up as I went. I would ask though, how will you cut an opening in 1ft thick brick walls? My guess would be to cut larger than needed then attach a wooden frame within the brick, then mount your door. But there I go making it up on the fly again 😅
@@tokyosteve1223 The opening already exists, the door looks like its a century old and is rotted and needs to be replaced. I would imagine that newer, pre-hung doors are fastened differently then the doors of yesteryear. I will see about attaching some wood around the opening, that is a good idea. Thank you!
This is hard work until youre faced with a century old double brick cavity wall.. cutting, back filling, damp course, mortar, rendering, brick laying. Then this is easy. 👍

Actually this one wasn't expensive at all. $250 for the door, $45 for the lintel, a bunch of 2x4s, some trim... The rest was just a whole lotta grunt work haha. Cutting the brick and grinding down the concrete entrance to be flush was horrible. I mean it's done now and has a lovely paver walkway and step... And I use it everyday, but at the time. It was a dusty kind of punishment 😅😂

What does something cost like that on pre hung labor
I didn't actually look into it. Everything else I get quotes for was wildly beyond what I thought was reasonable... So it became DIY.

I suppose it depends on the codes where you live. My understanding in Ontario is that anything structural required a permit.

My city had an online portal for building/reno permit applications. It wasn't as big of a hassle as I had anticipated. Check on your city's website, quite likely the same will exist.

Door was about $250 at Home Depot if I remember correctly. The rest was free - just my time and effort making a huge hole in the wall 😂

Your casing width looks too narrow. You should have ordered your door with a wider casing.
Yep. That's what an off the shelf discount Home Depot door gets you. Home made door jamb extensions.
Big effort. Do wear a mask next time so you don't fill your lungs with dust!
Yeah I had a mask. Apparently it wasn't a great one though.
Next time for a jamb extension, you want to pre drill it, and use Trim-head screws (length will vary on thickness of extension) then you can attach brick mould to that with stainless or galvanized nails since this is exterior.
Ideally just order a door with the correct jamb width. It doesnt cost much more then a home depot door and they make them up to 8 inches wide.
Yunno, I did try to find the deeper doors, but the cost at the time from the big box stores was much much higher. I wanted a low cost project so I just needed to figure something out as they say haha. It still looks like the day it was installed and is our primary entrance to a mudroom style setup in the garage.
@@tokyosteve1223 You need to go to an actual door supplier (collins toker in Canada). They're standard sizes are jambs widths to 7 1/2. I ordered one for my front door of that width and it was actually $50 cheaper through them then buying a 4 9/16 door from Home depot and having to add extensions.
And it's a full fiberglass frame and door, unlike the cheap pine frame of HD doors.
