  • Kosher technologies are gadgets or programs that have been modified to make them acceptable for use in the Orthodox Jewish community. The aim of kosher tech is to block elements of modern technology, like the internet, apps, social media, and so on. In this video, I introduce you to all kinds of kosher techs, from kosher phones to kosher kiosks. I visit a bunch of Hasidic shops, try a filter, buy a phone, and more.
    0:00 What is kosher technology?
2:00 Buying a kosher phone at the vending machine
    3:10 Visiting Eichler’s for a Kosher MP3
3:30 Kosher technology is not Luddism
4:00 Visiting Loadio, where you can transfer audio
    5:09 Looking at kosher cameras
    6:06 Trying a kosher filter
    7:20 Visiting a gender-segregated kosher internet kiosk

I'm not Jewish but I'm finishing reading a book that partly talks about the Amish and their approach to tech and I then became curious how other religious groups approach it as well and that's how I came across your video. I actually live like a block away from the local Chabad synagogue and it never occured to me to ask how Hasidim approach this so I'm really grateful for this video.

There's no internet connection & therefore no "online" to access so I'm not sure how this helps with "online privacy," although I suppose not having internet access is one way to avoid compromising your data, even if you also can't do much with it.

Very conservative Brethren Church members who are not quite old order (horse and buggy) also have a similar filtered flip phone available w/o internet. Still photos are allowed.
New Order Amish are allowed flip phones, but no internet, no photo or video capacity last I heard. These things may vary from group to group, but I am very glad for conservative faith groups to still have technology options!! Thank you for showing us what is available near you!

Meanwhile, in Israel, there is a war on Kosher phones, or more specifically, phone numbers locked to Kosher phones. This year, the communications minister abolished the exclusivity of kosher numbers to kosher phones and now, a user can transfer their kosher number to a new smartphone and no-one will know. Of course, before that, many people simply had two phones: one kosher, one not.

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn Oh yes. It may seem hypocritical, but I've learned to appreciate just how flexible even the strictest societies can be sometimes as long as you follow the rules -- or, more importantly, appear to. Sure, some remain super zealous even behind closed doors and must be no fun to live with, but most people manage to draw their own line somewhere else. For some, unfortunately, it is done with great angst and guilt, and others, also unfortunately, with very little integrity or care.

Why can't television EVER be kosher? There should be a way to have a custom TV or a monitor paired with a set top box that only receives special channels that are produced by a kosher programming company. They have this in my city for blind people which uses a special radio that receives a hidden station staffed by people who read newspapers and books and describe other materials to blind people.

Will it have a speaker system simular to that of the old antiquaited land line's. Or the same as even the most advanced, costly cell phone's. Or a speaker system, one being even the least bit hard of hearing can utilize.

Hello i am familiar with this from other readings. I am Jewish but not Hasidic
I know some people who are non Hasidic Orthodox who use the internet but only type in very specific information to access what they want.
Also this is only my personal opinion
There are Hasidic who use the regular internet.
Some people need it for business.
I see people in the public library.
Honestly and say this with full respect that I believe there are leaders and rabbis who tell there followers not to use the internet butbthey themselves do.
They are careful not to let others know.
People can have self discipline to use the intenet.
Again i personally believe it is censorship.
We should be responsible for ourselves.
Anything can be used for good and bad.
    Food; fire, money etc.
    God gave us free will.
For children these technologies are great.
    For adults it us censorship
We live in a free society and God gave us free will to make decisions.
I understand you are just reporting info and may/may not agree
    with this.
There are Hasidim who have showed up at my coed gym in Manhattan
    Nobody cared.
Same thing with the public library.
The very sad thing is that if someone is caught using "non-kosher' technology they are ostracized.
I know someone this happened to .
    Very very sad.
It comes down to power and mind control.
Hasidism has involved into a whole different world same as other streams of Judaism.
Sadly has changed into power bases within groups money and what I call "appearances" and not just in the Hasidic world.
Again no disrespect to you I am just telling you what i have observed and told by Hasidim
(Includes Satmar) and non Hasidic Orthodox streams.

And the fact that you have people taking chances or doing things that go against the rules...guess what. Theres always fallouts in every group and sect. So, what does that show? That some shmendrik thinks he can get away with it? You dont live for people. You live, or at least most religious people do...to please Hashem.. Rabbis make rules to shield and protect. They dont hold a gun to anyones head. Its ALWAYS your OWN choice, to CHOOSE OTHERWISE.

    • @phoneman-xs3ft
      @phoneman-xs3ft Год назад

I mostly agree with you but there's people like me who are easily addicted to the internet.
There's a lot of terrible things you get going into that is very much not kosher and even the non Jewish world is addressing such things, they just don't call it non kosher.
There's even scientific proof on how addictive the internet is and how it's affecting especially our youth.
I am one of those youth who got unnecessarily addicted to the internet when I had no one to talk to and I was lonely bored and depressed and at home.
From this experience, I think if someone voluntarily decides to have censorship for their devices instead of simply relying on their own judgment, I think that should be totally okay and to me that's a responsible move.
As long as it's not because they're told to do so and otherwise they have enough self-control in order not to involve themselves in unhealthy activities online.
I am not one of those people, and I did not come from an insular orthodox background.
So therefore, if someone personally feels they can allow to rely on their own judgment, to me that is a responsible and humble move.
Truly, kudos to anyone who can refrain themselves, I personally struggle, which is why I go into these comments sections and I still hang out on the internet. BH I'm on the internet way less than I used to, way less, but it's not enough.
It's not toxic censorship if the person consent to it. It is when they don't question it.

      @maril1379 Год назад +1

@@phoneman-xs3ft I understand what are you are say abd I agree with you .
My issue has to do with freedom of choice. If an adult in some of these communities us found to be using a regular cell phone they get into trouble.
      It's a form of censorship .
Some groups have made it very clear that it is against the religion to use the internet abd regular phones.
My issue is that adults should make thrur own decision and not suffer
Consequences.if they choose a regular phone.
For someone in your situation. I understand .
      For children I understand .
Otherwise it's censorship to tell someone what devices they can snd cannot use.
People wuth regular phones and technology often have to use in secret and away from the community yo avoid repercussions

But we don't live in a community where people do this, I was in effect isolated in my home with no social interactions via social media. I got lonely and went back to social media.

this is kind of strange and very ironic these traditional Jews are very critical about modern technology but around the world ethical Jews is supporting modernized technology such as secular ethical Jews is supporting the New age technology I have seen Orthodox Hasidic Jews in libraries watch RUclips and Google but that's supposed to be forbidden but they still did it so I think it's really all a cover-up or even an individual opinion for everybody to live a certain way no one is always traditional everybody is doing something modern period 💯🖥️📱

The world is never as clear-cut as it looks from the outside. The irony is that while Hasidim officially ban a lot of technology, they are also very into technology (often modified, kosher) and they are almost fond of it. And yes, cheating on the official rules is quite commonplace!

If you don’t want kids learning about “the birds and the bees” from the internet, the solution is for parents and the school system to provide adequate, evidence-based sex education. Banning something only makes it more alluring, and promotes alternatives that may be worse.

@@GRBtutorials I have way less problems with school teaching where babies come from than the internet.
Kids aren't learning it from the internet as a scientific Google search, they are learning it from social media and horny people on the internet.
The internet is not what it was in the 90s, my guy, even then, there was plenty of dangers on there
Sex should be taught by trusted adults, not randos on the internet whether it be actual fellow adolescents or adults creeping online, chatting with minors about kinks, fetishes and other things that can wait till adulthood to be exposed to (not that kinks can't develop in puberty, but it's something the the individual should discover from their own, uninfluenced urges, not from peer pressure online or in person)
I would have preferred, for example, that I at nine years old, didn't learn what is the "ideal" sex position was from accidentally coming across smutt of characters I was innocently looking up reference images for the sheer purpose of making a fan comic about them, in a completely PG manner (it was transformers prime, btw)
I would have personally preferred exploring sexual positions when I was ready, not as a surprise during a completely unrelated search
