We have a 22ft above ground saltwater pool that turns green everytime it rains. We are just opening it up for this year. Last year we struggled with it constantly.
I have a 30,000 gal. pool that was a slightly less extreme version than in the video abandoned by the former owner of the house and I hammered it hard with chlorine, but was left with very cloudy water for a week. From top to bottom the particles of dead algae were very thick. The filter was just not helping clear it up after that time so I used flocculant and let it sit for 2 1/2 days after recirculating for 3 hours. Miracle stuff. The water turned crystal clear and the bottom was covered with the dead algae. Took two days of vacuuming very slow and carefully on waste/refilling with fresh water and now the pool looks amazing.
Why not just drain the pool and start from scratch--clean the filter and when drained use a mixture of chlorine and water on the pool and then refill with good water---water is cheaper then all the chemicals that you are going to add---
good video! we have a saltwater pool that always turns green during the winter ~ does this process and all the specific steps still apply to a saltwater system?

I used the slam method on my pool today because it was looking real green. The wife even went out for a swim, I then ‘slammed’ her afterwards. Feel like a champion
I wish someone made an all in one testing kit that stays in my pool, connected to an app on my phone that will tell me exactly what to do every week. It’s overwhelming to keep a pool in good condition
I have spent about $400.00 so far in the past 3 months trying to get my pool clear. It is really green.. I added stabilizer about a week ago. I have not added anything else because i dont know where to go from here.. But after watching your video i think i should start adding liquid shock.. Will that work i have levels of chlorine right now that are.05. I have 12 gal of liquid shock. How many should i start with.. My pool is 13000 gal.
Lalah Miller try testing for p.h levels of p.h is high add muriatic acid and then throw in some cal hypo if you have a plastered pool.cal-hypo is a stronger shock then liquid chlorine .....etc etc
Chad Bull I agree 100% they need to drain and remove all the garbage. Acid wash the wall and you got to know that water was stale as hell. These guys really don’t know what they’re talking about.

Hello; I was out of home for 2 months and now I have a lot of algae in my pool. I saw your videa and meassured the Cyanuric Acid leve is 100. My pool is 13800 galons. How much cyanuric acid should I add. I can still add around 1800 gals of fresh water because I drained some water removing some of the highly saturated water with algae.
I am anxious to try this. I have done a few others and gotten very little results. I had not heard the importance of the CYA levels to the FC levels before. This makes sense! We have already added two gallons of chlorine, but it is not even close to the shock level. Getting more chlorine on the way home from work to do this over the weekend. Thanks!
Last night it was the last level on the little test strip. I have turned off the salt water pump for now and just running regular filter. chlorine level is just barely below where it typically should be. It's still green though. I had not ever heard of raising to shock level.
It depends on the health of the sand in the filter. If the sand is only a year or so old, I would go through the algae cleaning process and then access it afterward. If the sand is not thoroughly gunked, then you can keep it. But if your sand is 3-5 years old, you may get one to two shock cycles out of it before replacing it.
Aluminum sulfate (Floc & Vac) is a great option and will speed up the process of clearing up a pool. We recommend it for people who are having trouble clearing up the pool after they have killed the algae with chlorine.
hello you said add 3.5 gallons of 10% chlorine. however in your calculator. gallon was only 96 oz.. so was it really 3.5 gallons or 3.5 - 96 oz jugs?? thank you
Been using the SLAM method since 6/30. Results for water: FC: 16 CC: .5 CYA: 40 PH: 7.7 TA: 120 Pool is still cloudy in the deep-end with a tint of green. Been like that since 7/6. Any suggestions on getting it clear? I brush and vacuum a few times a day (vacation) but nothing. The Hayward C3030 was installed on 6/30, starts at 12PSI and haven't got up since. Cleaned it every 2-3 days with very little debris... TFP folks say I don't have to clean the filter since it's not over 25%. Should I just leave it or clean it every 2-3 days? Pool is a 23K IG.
Are you running your pump 24/7 or a set time each day? Even though all the algae was dead, the pool in the video took quite a long time to clear up completely (several weeks). It sounds like you're heading in the right direction by installing the Hayward C3030. I would continue to clean it every three days until the pool is clear. Also, make sure you're not brushing your pool and then immediately vacuuming afterward. When you brush it stirs up all the debris that has settled to the bottom. Always vacuum before brushing. You could always try adding a clarifer (goo.gl/eDcmz4) which will coagulate the small dirt particles and make it easier for your filter to grab them. Just keep at it, It will get there. Let us know what happens :)
Been running 24/7 for since 6/30. Added clarifier this morning but still the same. Getting impatience with this pool. LOL! Also been running a dolphin dx4s and it's not picking up anything in the pool floor beside 1-3 acorns. Cartridge on that is clean also. Moving FC to 21 tonight to see if it'll be any different. Don't know why but during the night, I only lose .5-1 FC... Would expect more if the algae are still hanging around.
No, chlorine tablets are formulated to include cyanuric acid, raising stabilizer levels. The higher the CYA , the higher you'd need to independently raise chlorine to reach 'shock levels,' which you cannot do using standard tablets.
Here is a link to our American filter cartridges. Let us know if you don't see it. www.inyopools.com/Category/american-products-replacement-cartridge-selections.aspx
Including chemicals and labor, you are looking at at least a few hundred ducks. This process is a days-long process; there's no real shortcut. The price could vary greatly depending on your area. We're in Florida, so competition between pool companies helps keep the price in check.
My pool water looks the same having just went through months of no chlorine here in Louisiana. How much shock should I start with if I have a 10,000 gallon above ground pool? I have a sand filter. Do I need to change out the sand daily until clear? Thanks!!
We started the year with a fairly clear pool, Then it went very green, we tried shocking and using anti algae. It cleared a little but still partly green, did a lot of more shock Chlorine reading was negative and this happened several other times so then changed the sand in our filter tank. Back washed and added shock . Next morning pool lot better but cloudy . Chlorine reading OK . The following morning pool still cloudy Chlorine reading once again negative, not sure what we should now be doing . Weather at the moment is 35 to 40 degs . We leave summer cover off in the day but cover at night, Any help would be greatfull Friendly regards Royston Watkins ( France )
I need your help I have an above ground pool that holds approximately 7500 gallons of water and it's green please I need your help getting it clear again so my grandkids can have fun this summer
Hello Clive - Following the instructions in the video will help clear up your pool. The key is to maintain a strong chlorine level throughout the process and to clean the filter whenever it is full. The filter may need to be cleaned multiple times a day.
@@Inyopools Thanks so much for the response! Very helpful! We are new pool owners so I have been looking up the products suggested in your video. With the vacuum and hose, where do you hook the hose up to pump the debri out?
You would plug the hose into your skimmer. We'd recommend using a vac plate on the skimmer basket or an inline trap on the hose. This way the larger debris doesn't make it into the pipes.
I'm fighting a cloudy pool after beginning the slam process. Basically mine looks like the video at 4:55. It's been stuck there for about 4 days with daily vacuuming and wall cleaning. How can i clear it up? Using sand filter and saltwater chlorine system. Here are my readings: FC: 12 TA: 100 CYA: 100
Hey Nathaniel, keep on filtering and backwashing that filter daily. It can take quite a bit of time if your filter is on the smaller side. You may want to consider upgrading your filter (or changing your sand) if you feel it's not getting the job done. For the pool in this video, we actually had to use a supplemental pump and a quad cartridge filter to speed up the process. Keep up the hard work, it will get there. Good Luck!
I'll assume you don't have a salt pool. If you do, some of the following would not apply - If your CYA is truly 100 ppm, your chlorine is way too low. According to the CYA-FC chart you need to reach & hold chlorine at 39 ppm until your water clears and you pass the OCLT. That will take a lot of chlorine to SLAM and you'll need to maintain chlorine in the 8-13 ppm range to keep algae from returning. Would be best if you can drain & replace water to get down to the 30-50 ppm range for CYA.
"If your CYA is truly 100 ppm, your chlorine is way too low." That is totally false. I see a lot of juvenile pool companies use CYA as an excuse to not holding chlorine. I've seen thousands of pools with a CYA above 150 ppm and they hold chlorine just fine or sometimes way too much. Many of them have no combined chlorine at all. In fact, most pool owners fail to properly take care of their pools because they are either unsure about how to do it, they are lazy, they can't follow instructions, or they believe that there own methods work better than a professional pool companies method.
show1111yes2 Do you understand how CYA and chlorine interact? 12 ppm of chlorine would be fine if the pool was clear. It is not. He is using the SLAM process. That requires maintaining chlorine at a level determined by the CYA level (in this case, 39 ppm) until the pool is clear and it passes the OCLT.
As a pool and water care professional, I believe the whole idea of using OCLT is completely ridiculous. There are way more factors that can cause his water to be cloudy other than just observing the free chlorine loss overnight. Things to look at: 1. How old is his sand? 2. How many times does he backwash? He may be removing alot of chemicals. 3. Is he getting good filtration or pressure? 4. Is his water out of balance? 5. Did he add balancers within a reasonable time limit? (making sure not to add right after each other) 6. How long ago did he add shock and how much chlorine tabs or sticks is he putting in. I see many people bring water tests in with high chlorine levels and it ended up that they shocked right before they took the sample. 7. Cloudy water if treated properly can be a time game when it comes to clearing up. 8. He could have a CC level but that can be easily treating by adding a lot of shock. 9. If all else fails, just Floc it!
A chlorine or acid wash is usually the most effective way to remove algae stains. We cover this in our video, How To Drain and Clean A Swimming Pool --> ruclips.net/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/видео.html

Why not just drain the pool and start from scratch--clean the filter and when drained use a mixture of chlorine and water on the pool and then refill with good water---water is cheaper then all the chemicals that you are going to add---
Great video! just started working as retail for a pool company.
Drain and refill.. Job done
*Great Chemistry going on* 😂😂
Thank you!
You're welcome!
extremely good
Haven't had an algae bloom since adding Clearwater Pool Systems RC-50 ionizer. Clearest water and almost no chlorine!
Where did you get that at
really , are you a sells person or advertiser ?
Thank you so much 😁❤️
Great video. Tons of useful info thx
This video was such a big help I was totally lost thanks for the heads up now I know what to do good job guys thanks for making this video
Our pleasure! Thank you for the feedback.
Great advice.
Best explanation I've seen.
What a great video. Thank you very much!!!
good video! we have a saltwater pool that always turns green during the winter ~ does this process and all the specific steps still apply to a saltwater system?
Hello Bred Hed - Yes, the same process would apply to saltwater pools.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am going to take pics of my pool~it is worse than one in video~been at least ten years since open. Then I am going to follow your directions to clean this and when done take another pic~I will share them on your web page if I can~hope this works, got a lot of work to do!
Good luck, Angela! We look forward to hearing about your results.
I like these two people.
good video
I used the slam method on my pool today because it was looking real green. The wife even went out for a swim, I then ‘slammed’ her afterwards. Feel like a champion
I wish someone made an all in one testing kit that stays in my pool, connected to an app on my phone that will tell me exactly what to do every week. It’s overwhelming to keep a pool in good condition
Thankyou so much i needed it! 😵
You could’ve easily spent 200 bucks on new water after u drained it and then added chemicals from there
Hello, I have a question, when we should turn on the pump?
Did you have to replace the pump at that pool?
That’s awesome…♥️
I would have drained the pool and acid or chlorine wash it. then woul have filled it back up and rebalance all the chemical levels.
Chad Bull I agree 100% they need to drain and remove all the garbage. Acid wash the wall and you got to know that water was stale as hell. These guys really don’t know what they’re talking about.
We also have a video where we drain and clean the pool. The Drain and clean was a quicker method compared to continuously shocking the pool and cleaning the filter. Here is a link to that video. ruclips.net/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/видео.html
Inyo Pools lol I really like how You didn’t get offended! Most channels would get an attitude at something like that! Just for that I’ll subscribe!
I use Transpoolfilter Has been very effective
My pool was super green and I just used 4 gallons 😁 I think I need like 4 _6 more🤔 thanks 👍
how many days did that take?
I didn't see you mention draining the old water? Surely you'd do that?
Nope. Generally you don't drain the water unless you are wanting to treat the walls of the pool.
We also have a video where we drain and clean the pool. The Drain and clean was a quicker method compared to continuously shocking the pool and cleaning the filter. Here is a link to that video. ruclips.net/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/видео.html
Where is the calculator you mentioned a couple of times in your video? Every year my pool has a problem with the algae
It was listed in our original blog post: www.inyopools.com/blog/how-to-clean-a-green-pool/
The PoolMath calculator can be found here: www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html
Why not drain the pool then change the water?
Some people don't have that option if they are on a water restriction. We've also done a video on the drain and clean method. ruclips.net/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/видео.html
Simply pump the pool complete empty, clean it and put new water in
its far more expensive and/or time consuming to do that rather than just treat the existing water as they did here.
Who wants to empty a pool
Water is expensive. $400 to fill up a 30k pool
Great info but what about adjusting the total alkalinity and calcium hardness for a balanced pool?
Shut up meg
I am anxious to try this. I have done a few others and gotten very little results. I had not heard the importance of the CYA levels to the FC levels before. This makes sense! We have already added two gallons of chlorine, but it is not even close to the shock level. Getting more chlorine on the way home from work to do this over the weekend. Thanks!
How high is your CYA level? - MGS
Last night it was the last level on the little test strip. I have turned off the salt water pump for now and just running regular filter. chlorine level is just barely below where it typically should be. It's still green though. I had not ever heard of raising to shock level.
Can you give me the actual number the test strip results were? - MGS
Any advice on cleaning of a sand filter or do you just empty it and replace the sand at algae levels this high?
It depends on the health of the sand in the filter. If the sand is only a year or so old, I would go through the algae cleaning process and then access it afterward. If the sand is not thoroughly gunked, then you can keep it. But if your sand is 3-5 years old, you may get one to two shock cycles out of it before replacing it.
just chlorine? I use aluminium sulfate to flock, am I wrong?
Aluminum sulfate (Floc & Vac) is a great option and will speed up the process of clearing up a pool. We recommend it for people who are having trouble clearing up the pool after they have killed the algae with chlorine.
@@Inyopools noice.
Can this be done using bromine?
Please tell me what kind of medicine for swimming pool green water,
Good videos I am interested
Do you have advice to turn a green pool back to blue using bacquisil?
hello you said add 3.5 gallons of 10% chlorine. however in your calculator. gallon was only 96 oz.. so was it really 3.5 gallons or 3.5 - 96 oz jugs?? thank you
Been using the SLAM method since 6/30. Results for water:
FC: 16
CC: .5
CYA: 40
PH: 7.7
TA: 120
Pool is still cloudy in the deep-end with a tint of green.
Can you maintain shock level with chlorine tablets?
No, chlorine tablets are formulated to include cyanuric acid, raising stabilizer levels. The higher the CYA , the higher you'd need to independently raise chlorine to reach 'shock levels,' which you cannot do using standard tablets.
Does SLAM work for an above ground?
I would to know to buy the round filters for the old model American filter
Here is a link to our American filter cartridges. Let us know if you don't see it. www.inyopools.com/Category/american-products-replacement-cartridge-selections.aspx
just curious, but what should a service like this cost? just bought a home with a pool that hadn’t been maintained in about 1-2 months.
We leave summer cover off in the day but cover at night, Any help would be greatfull
Friendly regards Royston Watkins ( France )
How about above ground pools that are rubber does this work with it
Yes, same principles of water chemistry apply.
Can we use bleach instead of chroline
Yes.
Would you follow these same proceedures if you were wanting your pool to be a saltwater pool?
Yes, you could follow these same instructions before converting to a saltwater pool.
Isn’t it just easier to drain and re fill the pool?
Yes. Same question here. 😅
Fyi
YES you can drain and start over but they are simply just showing another way to do it. Basically proving that you don't need to drain it.
Yessssssss you can do that but I'm sure your water bill is going to sky rocket instead of just adding a couple jugs of chlorine
FNX I love reading through the comments because they often answer the questions I have in the first place thank you very much!!!
How many days did it take to get the pool blue again?
This pool took a little over a week to clear up.
I'm fighting a cloudy pool after beginning the slam process. Basically mine looks like the video at 4:55. It's been stuck there for about 4 days with daily vacuuming and wall cleaning. How can i clear it up? Using sand filter and saltwater chlorine system. Here are my readings:
FC: 12
TA: 100
CYA: 100
Hey Nathaniel, keep on filtering and backwashing that filter daily. It can take quite a bit of time if your filter is on the smaller side. You may want to consider upgrading your filter (or changing your sand) if you feel it's not getting the job done. For the pool in this video, we actually had to use a supplemental pump and a quad cartridge filter to speed up the process. Keep up the hard work, it will get there. Good Luck!
I'll assume you don't have a salt pool. If you do, some of the following would not apply -
If your CYA is truly 100 ppm, your chlorine is way too low.
In fact, most pool owners fail to properly take care of their pools because they are either unsure about how to do it, they are lazy, they can't follow instructions, or they believe that there own methods work better than a professional pool companies method.
show1111yes2
Do you understand how CYA and chlorine interact?
12 ppm of chlorine would be fine if the pool was clear. It is not. He is using the SLAM process. That requires maintaining chlorine at a level determined by the CYA level (in this case, 39 ppm) until the pool is clear and it passes the OCLT.
As a pool and water care professional, I believe the whole idea of using OCLT is completely ridiculous. There are way more factors that can cause his water to be cloudy other than just observing the free chlorine loss overnight.
Things to look at:
1. How old is his sand?
2. How many times does he backwash? He may be removing alot of chemicals.
3. Is he getting good filtration or pressure?
4. Is his water out of balance?
5. Did he add balancers within a reasonable time limit? (making sure not to add right after each other)
What about green stains on the wall after the pool has turned clear? How do I fix those please?
A chlorine or acid wash is usually the most effective way to remove algae stains. We cover this in our video, How To Drain and Clean A Swimming Pool --> ruclips.net/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/видео.html
@@Inyopools thanks!
For that pool on video. What is the duration to get it completed? Anyone.
