2:46 that vintage ESPRIT collection is so nostalgic for me. I miss those colors and most importantly, the high quality of the pieces. I grew up very poor to a young single mom, but once I got a bag of hand me downs and an ESPRIT long sleeved turquoise shirt was in it. It was probably 7 years old and a lot of kids had worn it, but it was thick and the color was not faded a single bit. I wore it in 6th grade and thought I was so stylish

I live in Germany and my clothing consists of Esprit up to 80%. They have high quality clothes, and it looks like they have in mind something close to my body type when they design the clothes. They are closing the stores here too (I think mostly because rental prices are crazy), but one can still order online. Pity if they completely disappear 😢
Zara and H&M are nowhere near. Those brands are just fast fashion crap.

I’ve always loved their t-shirts and long sleeves. The jeans sadly weren’t for me - I have an hourglass shape and their cut was too straight in the waist for me. The clothes used to be such good quality (natural fibre, good craftsmanship in the seams and cuts) in a middle class price range (on the German market). I was so sad to see them close their store in my city during the time where people still took the pandemic seriously. Always bought my basics there, and was able to find business casual clothes there too when I started working full time. They used to be more playful, colourful and fresh in terms of style in the 90ies and 00s however, especially in their casual wear.

Esprit has filled for bankruptcy in Europe in the last week of July but that was not widely publicized at that point. I returned from my holiday on the 25th and went to shop in one of their stores in my city. On August 6th I got the newsletter saying only three stores in the Netherlands will be open on August 8th for closing sales. And after that, all shops were closed. I feel a bit sad tbh. I still could find great pieces for reasonable prices every season. And to my knowledge Esprit as a brand was never associated with any shady business, children labor or sweatshops so I am extra sad to see them go down while HM and Primark are still growing.

I used to be a loyal customer to Esprit for basics, but the last 4-5 years, the quality kept diminshing and the prices kept increasing. They have become a somewhat expensive brand (compared to Zara for example) but with a quality that goes towards cheap H&M stuff. And as you said, they haven’t really renewed their style. Looks like there is a lot of bad management involved there. But I think that there is also a general polarisation of the market that is making other victims in similar retailers. Luxury brands with high quality do well, very cheap brands do well, and everybody in the middle is just dying at the moment.

I am writing this from India...some 25 years back Esprit was a big brand. In India, as a child I used to see it's advertisements, a few posh expensive high end stores however it was beyond our reach for price being a reason. I always fancied buying something from Espirit. Slowly and gradually over the years this brand faded away somewhere. I no longer saw the stores and big advertisements from Espirit. It also faded from my memory. Just a couple of weeks back I was shopping at a retail store that also had a section for Espirit. Excited to find this childhood brand, now well within my reach, I jumped to that section however the quality and designs were really disappointing. Not something that they offered 20 to 25 years back. Unfortunately, I walked out of that section and bought from a different Indian brand which offered much better quality and designs.

I remember the Esprit ads when I was a teen in the 1980’s. Although I never wore Esprit clothing from their men’s collection, I did like seeing the vibrant colors and the chunky shoes! I dated a girl who wore Esprit clothes and I liked seeing her wearing the vibrant colors.
This brand was very forward thinking and well ahead of their time concerning many issues that confound us today.
I bought my wife some Esprit boots last Christmas and she was surprised the brand was still around. I feel many of these great brands are shuttering their doors because of “fast fashion.” I’m sad to hear they will move to licensing, which means products will diminish in quality. 😂

In my country, back in the peak of the 80s, to wear ESPRIT was something. Their clothes were cool, high quality, fashion forward and casual. I liked how they made themed cohesive collections with many accessories to choose. One thing that current generations don't understand is the way fashion trends came to life back then. Magazines like Teen, BOP and Seventeen were the source for inspiration and everything fashion. Also movies and MTV. ESPRIT has no place in the current fashion scenario.

This a big emotional blow as I was a loyal customer for the last 15 years. I don't like shopping that much and they had all the stuff i needed so i went to their shops until they closed. Afterwards I just bought stuff online and I have slowly witnessed the demise and the fall of their brand, quality and overall business. Their last 'rebrand' was an absolute disaster - complete confusion about the targeted customer. They either went for a young, almost teen look on the one hand and for the lux very expensive upmarket cloths on the other. The look that they have been known for kind of disappeared and the prices went up so I stopped buying as I couldn't find anything that I used to like to wear. What an pity! There is no one to replace them. They ruined themselves.

I remember my grandma bought me some Esprit clothes like 20 years ago and the brand was so cool, the quality was so great. I grew up and kept buying their clothes until like 2016. Clothes became boring. Same basics all the time and the quality descreased with years (I kept clothes 12-13 years for some so it was really a good brand before!). Too bad they couldn't adapt to fashion and marketing!

Um, late to the news. Esprit used to be in Canada. They closed all their stores before 2020. Also, Esprit was never cheap - at least not in Canada. One t-shirt was $29.97, blouses ranged from $19.97 to $49.97. Jeans ranged from $101.97 to $175.00. Anyways, sorry that they had to shut down. The brand was a nice one.

Esprit makes basics and timeless classics, which will never go out of fashion. The problem with other fast fashion brands like zara is that they cater to trends, that become dated after a few wears. The issue is the current generation of consumers, who like to buy and throw their clothes away after 5 wears. Maybe esprit should try focussing on a different demographic, men and women above the age of 35, who are looking for fashionable, classic peices in good quality at an affordable price.

I didn’t know it was such an ethically-responsible brand. Now I want to help by buying something, we need more brands like this. Unfortunately, what we get from most brands is not honest, real changes in response to our ethical concerns, but “greenwashing”, instead. Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy hearing the results of your brand research.❤

I used to like Esprit but at least in Finland they moved very heavily online, with extremely small collection in stores. Very few interesting items were available in person and hit and miss quality and sizing left me hesitant to order. I switched to Lindex. Much more consistent sizing makes my experience much better.

I noticed my local store had closed last week. I used to buy a lot from them, and I still have a few jeans and my trusty leather jacket from Esprit in my wardrobe. I haven't shopped from them regularly for about 10 years, and the last thing I bought (a pair of linen trousers), I'd have said I got them from H&M or Zara if pushed. I think that says a lot about their quality, and is part of the reason I dont shop with them anymore.

Another brand local to me, San Francisco! Of course, Levi’s, Gap, Banana Republic (originally began in Mill Valley, a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge), and many other brands started here, too. We bought our first jeans at the original, first “The Gap” store by Tower Records in North Beach (San Francisco) when we were teenagers in the 1970s. Back then, it was always low-rise bell-bottoms, dragging on the floor - the greatest possible faux pas was wearing “floods” (any pants that didn’t hit the floor/ground). With our black cotton veleveteen blazers, of course. Where the heck did all that time go? Love every moment, life flies by.

I liked Esprit back in the day, but I thought this brand was long-dead already, if I thought about it at all. Maybe they didn’t do any advertising? I just don’t remember seeing it anywhere for maybe the last 20 years or so. Does anyone remember The Limited, French Connection or Express? Thinking back to the brands I shopped then, these also came to mind. I suppose they’re gone too. It must be hard to compete with H&M, at least price-wise, and H&M does always have cute styles. I shop more Premium High Street brands these days to get the fabrics I need, plus I’ve come to really value the higher quality. I got pushed up to that more expensive level because I developed allergies to plastics, so no more synthetic fabrics for me. Breathability is essential, too, once we get older, we just can’t stay cool as easily, even in cool weather overheating is a huge problem. Plastic fabrics can’t breathe any better than garbage bags can.

Recently I’ve been unsure who they were aiming at. The cut of the clothes was very conservative (like for older women), fabrics not very pleasant to touch, but in crazy bright colours. And the prices became ridiculous, I only bought a few pieces there in the last 2 years on sale. A simple T-shirt should not cost 50€.

I really really liked esprit, but they cut on quality. I went in a shop last spring, saw a lovely lavender blue mid season jacket. It was priced at 139,99€ ... but made of 75% polyester.
Good design, poor fabric, I didn't buy (I hate polyester, it's not breatheable, you sweat and you stink in it). It was a bit pricey but I could have if the fabric was better (like a mix of linen and pima cotton, I don't know).
They used to offer quality clothes that would last, I think this era is sadly now gone.

Even tho this is a totally different brand from the north face but created by the same exact people, we often recognize the brand that is more successful and stick to that because the public eye doesn’t care about anything else. Also, ESPIRT, like Comme Des garçons PLAY, has seen its prime time. Sometimes time does play a big part in fashion. Not many people r going to wear smtn that was so prominent in the 2015s in 2025.
