  • This was my maiden voyage to Sonoma Raceway in the Viper, tracking with a friend that was GoProing the session. At 3:00, I pass him and come into the picture. At 4:00, it gets exciting as I begin to close in on the orange Bondurant Mustang. I was taking my time, and couldn't figure out why the track was so damned slippery. I figured that my tires must have been heat-cycled out as I had no grip. As we enter the esses, suddenly the reason why became clear, as a fine mist hit my windshield. It turns out that the Mustang was leaking fluid right in front of me. Next thing I know, he slips in his own fluid and smashes into the wall at speed. You can see the spray of fluid just before his ass end steps out. Thankfully he was ok but went to the hospital as a precaution. His car was absolutely totaled.

That thing slipped in oil or something, you can see a spray before his car just sorta starts floating off. And he wasn't going fast enough to spin

I'm surprised the car made it all the way to the wall, he was out there driving Miss Daisy.

What people don't understand is, their tires can go and their brakes could fail when they need it the most. Some people stop before their tires give but some don't.

no, that is never a problem when you drive at the limit.. the limit is always changing, and the driver should easily be able to stay under it. this was not a tire issue , this was an over control issue and poorly timed input problem. sad to see, because those walls at that speed does a car in for good. this is why skill development is far more important than performance . go slower, test the car over and over again before you push it past your capabilities.

I disagree. there's no reason for that car to steer left right at that moment when the track is going to the right. and there was no reason to brake. that car was doing fine until that moment and there looked like something glossy on the track IMO.

From the look I got blown engine on the mustang leading to it spinning on its own oil that's just a sucky way to crash out of a track day running along then your engine blows up causing you to crash because I seen metal bits tumbling down the track that the viper ran over

there's absolutely nothing on the track that would hint a blown engine.

Old video but this looks like a case of too much power and not enough experience. I do question the spray seen before he went off. Wondering if he had a oil failure.
