Cool workarround, I´m having really annoying lag issues, the iMac is wired directly to the router and the pc on wifi but literally 30 cm away from the router, any tips???
Very nice video! Just subbed. I successfully installed windows 10 Pro on my Mac and initially "Projecting to this PC" wasn't showing up. I googled and went into the computer management and enabled the setting like you did. Unfortunately, my Imac isn't showing up on the devices list on source PC. I verified both machines are running in the same WIFI network (I don't have the provision to have a wired network) and made sure they are discoverable. I am not sure what the problem is. Bummer :( Any help is appreciated!
Thanks for posting this. Great video and well worth a sub! It seemed like I would finally be able to leverage the iMac as an additional screen for my work. I'm running a PC laptop on Windows 10 Enterprise and a late 2015 iMac. I've gone through the instructions but ultimately the iMac never shows up as a discoverable option. I'm not sure why this is, but looks like i'll have to go for a separate stand-alone monitor.
If you run the DxDiag, the hardware DOES support Miracast. Despite this, the options for it are all grayed out on the "Projecting to this PC" tab with the "Device doesn't support Miracast" message. Not sure how it stacks up, but I wonder if they closed some loophole on the 2019 iMacs...

When I attempt to add the wireless display on my PC, it's able to detect my iMac but when I try to connect, it says "Couldn't connect". Any idea what the cause could be? I have WiFi running on both, connected to the same network.
I have an iMac and I'm just building a custom PC for gaming and streaming. Budget quite tight. You recon there's anyway to use the iMac as a monitor for it to save buying one? It's one of the thin iMac's too.
Hi! Thanks so much for this helpful video, but after doing all those steps the PC can’t connect. Protected content can’t be viewed on this device.’ Any ideas please?
Hi! I have a question. When I reached “projecting to this PC” on my iMac - all the options are greyed out. I even made sure wireless display was installed.. still greyed out an unable to select. Any possible solutions to this?
i'm fairly certain it only works over wifi as "connect to a wireless display" doesn't exist on my pc with a wifi dongle. unless something else done wrong. also i couldnt change the mac resolution past 1080p, no higher options exiist for me
Good video. Is there any specific hardware that connects the two monitors or is it all done via Wi-Fi? It looks like you have a lot of cables connecting the monitors.
Great one! One question left: If I use bootcamp and my mac screen as 2nd Screen for the pc… how do I change from Mac system windows and windows to Mac on the Mac? All the best
I'm not a MacOS user, but I think there should be function similar to Windows which is called"Remote control" on Windows to fullfill similar purpose.Inspired by your video, I wonder could it be possible that wireless project could actually make less latency than "Remote control"?
@@SocialHardware Thanks for your reply, but your video is demonstrating wireless projection right?Actually,I'm thinking to buy a high resolution monitor, the new model of imac with the basic spec seems to has good cost/performance ratio.I want to use the imac as a normal monitor and I don't want to use virtualize Windows such as Parallel, because my pc is kind of decent already, I don't want to waste it, yet I want an imac.If the new imac still capable to connect a pc with DP2 or HDMI2.1 or thunder bolt whatever, I think I'll get one.

how can i connect imac2017 to windows laptop as external monitor? i cant change the display settings as you have shown in video. mine are blocked as grey. always off!
(part solution) I'm going to try this out soon and mine is greyed out just like yours. A quick google search revealed that you need to have your wi-fi turned on and it needs to support wi-fi direct. As soon as I enabled wi-fi/wifi (I normally use an ethernet connection) on my Late 2015 iMac, the option to select "Available everywhere" in Windows settings->projecting to this PC became available (not greyed/grayed out). Check out my site at makethistechwork.com or my youtube channel at ruclips.net/channel/UCRfsvahoanW8rDO0-hghHaA (Update 12/27/19, doesn't work with iMac but does with older all-in-one touch screen PC from HP): Even after fixing the issue with "Available everywhere" being greyed out, I couldn't get the wireless display working on the iMac but I did get it working on an older HP Envy Rove touch screen all-in-one. Note: I'm not sure why the OP says it doesn't matter if you're using ethernet or wifi. It does. Ethernet only will not work. After all, this is a feature called "wireless display". Even the touch screen works on this older PC. Have no idea why it won't work on the iMac Late 2015. Might try to keep looking for solutions for the iMac
That is excellent. Thanks for the video. Question, running Windows 10 Pro on an iMac 27 5K. How is that experience? Switching between Windows and Apple is that easy? I'm currently contemplating getting the iMac 27 5K for video editing, but I'm no a fan of Apple, although see the advantage of the hardware. My thinking is 1 to use the iMac for video editing and 2 everything else on Windows 10. If both work hand in hand then it's almost two pcs in one. I currently have a surface Pro 4 with a 27 inch screen so could definitely use this solution in the video. 😀
I stumbled across this method myself too - but I couldn’t ever get the resolution to work like you did. I replaced my MacBook Air with a MS surface, I still have the iMac but sometimes its helpful to be able to use the bigger screen. Shame its not seamless. When the iMac dies, Ill be changing to full PC

I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use. 2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible. 3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display. Any help would be really useful.

Got bootcamp all set up finally (has taken me all day) just come back on to rewatch the video as for some reason the “projecting to pc” bit is all greyed out on my iMac... won’t give me an option to select any of the drop downs just says something about “mira(something)” at the top in red...
Did you resolve this issue?

Hi, thanks for the video and great explanation. Mine is iMac 4k 2017 model, i did everything as you explained in this video...however i cant still see my iMac on my PC to connect as wireless display. What could be the reason? thanks for your help.
500 subs, quality like a 2 million guy. GREAT
Many Thanks for the video. Very useful. I use Parallels on my MAC for running windows 10 but Parallels don't support Miracast. How did you work around this unless you don't use Parallels? Did you use a Miracast adapter?
i have the same issue

Thank you for posting this video. I just tried this with my work laptop. I thought I was SOL with my 2017, and now I’m loving the much larger real-estate!
Awesome! Glad this video is still kinda relevant in 2021!
@@SocialHardware what is the best imac to purchase to be able to run windows 10…it is so many out there. A novice who like the Apple iMac.
Great! It's just excellent... However, have you tried playing video games and is the resolution the same and is there any lag or jitter or a drop in FPS?
i can finally extend my work computer to my imac! i'm speechless! thank you!!
As far as i know, this does *not* work with NVIDIA Pascal GPUs and newer.
If you have an Intel iGPU it should work.
Correct me if i'm wrong, i have a 1070 and Miracast isn't supported it says.
I have no clue you could do this, really helpful...I found my old windows 10 tablet and that is now my third monitor. Very helpful, thank you!
This is awesome. 2nd life for my iMac...no landfill
love this!
Mine says it doesnt support miracast but I went into the software and it says it is supported hiw do I fix this?
Thanks a lot! Your video help me to give a second live to my old Imac. Thanks again!!!
Can this work with 2 Imacs, one 2017 imac 5k working as a second monitor of a 2019 imac 5k (both with bootcamp windows 10)?
I followed your steps and successfully installed the windows 10 on my iMac but all the options on the projection tab are greyed out. I get the message that says ‘’This device doesn’t support miracast, so you can’t project to it wirelessly”
Execute dxdiag and save the information in .txt file. Browse this file and find Miracast section. If it's "Not Available" the problem is on graphic card.
Hi, I had the same issue…in the section that says “Projecting to this PC” because it was grayed out, I had to option to “add wireless display “ which was a hyperlink on that same screen. Then, on the upper left hand corner I clicked a + sign that said “add features “ (or something like that). I clicked thst and typed in wireless display…once I added that I went back to “projecting to …” screen and it was no longer grayed out! I hope this helps.
I’m having the same issue.
Hi, thanks for this tutorial. Unfortunately when i reach this stage 3:14 the drop down options are not available. Instead it gives me an option to add "wireless display" optional feature to project to this PC.
Are you able to help with this?
Thanks

Thanks for the guide. After some initial fails it started working without issues! Now working from home became easier and it's nice to put my iMac to use :) Too bad I can't run it with full resolution. Still nice though. Using ethernet for both computers to reduce lag as much as possible.
Hi Hampus, how did you fix it?
@@hdmtmedia4875 Windows updates, and a bunch of restarts...
@David Lischka I'm not describing it in more detail because it wasn't clear to me what the issue was. Sorry! I didn't get any specific error messages, like the one you wrote about miracast. It didn't start projecting before I did Windows updates, but when both computers ran latest Windows version it started working. I don't know what else to say. Good luck, anyway!
Hi, could anyone tell what would be the highest resolution could be projected on a 2017 27inch imac screen using the method mentioned ? Thanks
This requires both devices to have a Wi-Fi chip that supports Wi-Fi direct as this is using the miracast standard btw
Great video. Works awesome putting a 5k imac wasting in closet to good use. Full 5K over wifi from my windows 10 laptop is actually really good, far better and more useful than I thought it would be. Only problem was installing windows 10 on 2013 imac, with lots of bumps along the way. But wireless display itself worked flawlessly. thanks!
Under "Projecting to this PC", all the functions are greyed out, perhaps due to lack of Miracast support by iMac. Any solution?
Hey man thanks for the video. But does this also work, if I have to be connected to a vpn with my Windows PC?
Would love to know this too!
I missed the part about installing windows 10 on the iMac lol
I want to use my iMac as an iMac and use my PC into the iMac as the primary display for the PC
I use the iMac for it's incredible display and as the DAW for my music production
I use the PC as the host for my online VR concerts that require a heavy duty gaming display card.
I guess I'm stuck with the two computers and displays
Well done mate, give some more usage for the crippled 5K versions which have been diabled from being used as monitors!!
Super helpful!!! Thank you!! My work computer is a PC Laptop and my personal is iMac! Right on! 🙏
same situation here. I tried as mentioned. But the screen wont stop flickering. Are you able to project the screen smoothly ?
So, you have to have Windows 10 Pro installed on both machines first?!? Quite an expensive workaround, but glad to hear it’s possible.
That’s awesome. Thank you. If I’m only using it as a monitor what’s the min space I should allocated for the windows 10?
Great video
On the Mac does Windows really need to be booted on the Mac’s physical hardware via boot camp, or can you simply use Windows running as a VM on macOS (example Parallels)?
Same question for me
Cool workarround, I´m having really annoying lag issues, the iMac is wired directly to the router and the pc on wifi but literally 30 cm away from the router, any tips???
Great tutorial, helped me so much. Amazing!
Glad it helped!
Does It work with imac 27 2019? Because in my case there is no "Projecting to this PC" option in windows 10 system settings(
For me it says something went wrong with connecting it
Very nice video!
Did you ever get this working? I have late 2015 5K retina and want to use it with my Win 10 PC.
Could not find the video explaining how to run Windows on a Mac. Would have been nice if you had a link for this.
Great idea..
But you cannot make an iMac 5k 2019 a remote display, as it"s hardare does not support Miracast. Period.
Sean Nicolaysen have you found a solution yet for imac2019? Please help

hey there awesome video quick question can you do this using Parallels or do you have to use bootcamp? with the software I'm using I hate to have to close out my safari to open up in bootcamp? smashed the like button
I get a message in settings that says -“This device doesn’t support receiving Miracast, so you can’t project to it wirelessly “
great tutorial, love your work! quick question: will this work on a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) - thanks a million
didnt work for me
Great Video, thank you! I've followed along the steps in this video (after installing Windows 10 via boot camp on my 2017 iMac). When I attempt to add the wireless display on my PC, it's able to detect my iMac but when I try to connect, it says "Couldn't connect". Any idea what the cause could be? I have WiFi running on both, connected to the same network.
Did you ever get it to work? I have the same problem
The IMac is detectable but after trying to connect it’s comes up with a message on the pc with ‘Couldn’t connect’. And on the iMac the message says ‘ This device might have trouble displaying your content because it’s hardware wasn’t specifically designed for wireless projection. Version 10.0.18362.1. Protected content can’t be viewed on this device.’ Any ideas please?
me too! some help would be amazing...
Hi! I have a question. When I reached “projecting to this PC” on my iMac - all the options are greyed out. I even made sure wireless display was installed.. still greyed out an unable to select. Any possible solutions to this?
this is the problem im also currently having, did you manage to find a solution at all?
@@jadelouise8032 unfortunately no 😢
i'm fairly certain it only works over wifi as "connect to a wireless display" doesn't exist on my pc with a wifi dongle. unless something else done wrong. also i couldnt change the mac resolution past 1080p, no higher options exiist for me
Good video. Is there any specific hardware that connects the two monitors or is it all done via Wi-Fi? It looks like you have a lot of cables connecting the monitors.
Not able to carry out step 3; it's on "Always Off" mode; already logon as administrator
i have the same problem...
Great one! One question left: If I use bootcamp and my mac screen as 2nd Screen for the pc… how do I change from Mac system windows and windows to Mac on the Mac? All the best
I'm not a MacOS user, but I think there should be function similar to Windows which is called"Remote control" on Windows to fullfill similar purpose.Inspired by your video, I wonder could it be possible that wireless project could actually make less latency than "Remote control"?
by saying "latency" I mean the display performance, resolution, refresh rate, etc. And what about compare to cable connect?
@@SocialHardware Thanks for your reply, but your video is demonstrating wireless projection right?Actually,I'm thinking to buy a high resolution monitor, the new model of imac with the basic spec seems to has good cost/performance ratio.I want to use the imac as a normal monitor and I don't want to use virtualize Windows such as Parallel, because my pc is kind of decent already, I don't want to waste it, yet I want an imac.If the new imac still capable to connect a pc with DP2 or HDMI2.1 or thunder bolt whatever, I think I'll get one.
Just read and followed the steps you have provide it to install Windows through Bootcamp on iMac- 2014. Everything was clearly explained. It was a breeze. But when I got to "Projecting to this PC" part and clicked= Everything/Every Choice was greyed out. So, I couldn't follow your instructions from there. Any suggestions? How can I ad a Screenshot so you can see for yourself?
Me too
Is this more of a gimmick or useful to use the iMac as a second screen? How long does it take to boot up to run the iMac as a second screen?
Wow, I'm so glad I found this video. I also reviewed the one showing how to instal Win10.
Before I go out and get a disk to do all this, can you please confirm if this will work when I have a VPN connected? I need the VPN for my work, so it is not really an option for me. I'll be projecting from my work Windows laptop to my personal iMac 5k.
Thanks!
Tom
Hi Tom, did it work with the vpn? Thanks
This didn't work for me. Miracast not supported with my 2019 iMAC. I've tried all sorts of fixes from the web but nothing works.
I tried on my iMac 2020 and it doesn’t work.
I followed your steps, but my iMac cannot be found on my PC project equipment list. Both my PC and iMac are using the same WiFi. My iMac is Retina 5K 2020
how can i connect imac2017 to windows laptop as external monitor? i cant change the display settings as you have shown in video. mine are blocked as grey. always off!
@@SocialHardware my laptop is powerful enough for sure even more powerful than imac:) and i am admin in windows in imac
Check out my site at makethistechwork.com or my youtube channel at ruclips.net/channel/UCRfsvahoanW8rDO0-hghHaA
(Update 12/27/19, doesn't work with iMac but does with older all-in-one touch screen PC from HP): Even after fixing the issue with "Available everywhere" being greyed out, I couldn't get the wireless display working on the iMac but I did get it working on an older HP Envy Rove touch screen all-in-one.

Thanks for the great video!. This might have been asked before or there are not any better option for Macbook, but is there a way to use iMac 5k as a monitor for macbook pro. I am connecting over vnc now-but there are lags. I appreciate if you could share any videos/tutorials you came across for that setup.
This has worked so thanks - however the colour coming through on the Mac is red. Any ideas on how to sort that out??

Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk.
Oh no! I completed this thinking I could still go back and forth in my PC and my Mac and now my iMac is a Windows PC and I am not sure how to get back to my original Mac settings and programs.
