  • In this video I show you all my ski press. This bad boy is the main, custom made, machine required for ski construction. All the rest of the tools are from the woodworking world (until you get to tuning, but that's where a good ski shop comes in).
    Its my first onscreen video, words are hard, so excuse some of the extra ones I slipped in there.

    Hey, love your press set up.
    I'm trying tu build one for myself, can you tel me what component you used to get the air into your firehose while having a good seal? thank you

      Hey, you bet. It was theses part from McMaster:
      50785K273 Medium-Pressure Brass Threaded Pipe Fitting, 1/4 Pipe Size, Through-Wall Coupling
      90131A106 Abrasion-Resistant Reinforced Rubber Washer, 3/4" Screw Size, 2" OD, 1/8" Thick

    that's amazing dude! i'm still impressed about it! very nice press. did you build yourself? and in this case... is there a way you could share somehow the way you did it? that would be a good orientation... for the moment i'm using vacuum press, but pressure is not the same... so i have to figure out the best way to build. Thanks for sharing!

      dude, thanks man!! I did build it myself. Had access to a machine shop. Made a CAD model. Took advice from happymonkeysnowboards.com for lots of it. It was a pretty huge project, but should last forever..

    I'm seeing all these "custom" ski presses, but they all look pretty similar. Did you build all this yourself, or is there a company doing builds like this?
    Or is everyone following a similar instruction manual?

      Hey, thanks for the compliment! Definitely first time producing videos... Good questions too. You can get a pre-built press from snowboardmaterials.com. The best guide I've found for building an 'industrial' style press is happymonkeysnowboards.com. Working on getting my shop back together after moving, but soon as its ready I'll be making plenty more videos, happy to hear you enjoy them!! Cheers

    Nice press, I’m keen to make a press for composite work. Do you think these heat blankets can heat to 100C or more?

      Hey, thanks! You can order the blankets to whatever wattage you want. I selected 2700W for mine. At 240V it takes about 11.25 Amps to drive, and with two blankets in my system I'm pushing 22.25 amps. So that really pushes the limits of a 20Amp breaker, better to have 30 or 40... The actual heat output depends on the conduction of the materials its pressed against, ambient temp, insulation... All that said, I haven't tried up to 100C, but I've done 60 no prob. I've even ran 60 on one blanket. Hope that helps!

      You may notice the 'custom' bit I show off in a few of my construction videos. That's what drives the sidewall angle. Its only 'custom' in the sense that I added a washer to the guide bearing.

    Hey man, nice press! I've got one somewhat smaller than yours (8" beams, 12" cavity height, 7' long), and it's been running great. I was wondering what pressures do you press skis at? I've been pressing snowboards at 45 psi (small compressor) but I've recently had trouble with leaks at the end of the fire hose and the last two have been pressed at 20-25 psi, and they turned out almost identically. I'd rather not over pressure the system as it doesn't have any overpressure safeties (other than pressure it up and get out) so I figured I'd ask.

      That's awesome! I go between 20 and 60 psi, hardly ever noticed a difference too. I feel like if you have a nice mold that provides even pressure then running it at lower psi is just fine. If you need to bend some sheet metal or whatever in you press then the higher pressure helps. Higher pressure may reduce weight too. So far I've never delaminated a pair of skis which might mean to dry/too much pressure. But I won't claim they are the lightest on the shelf either... Cheers!

    Nice setup. Did you ever consider just using an I-beam as the press. "Hinging'' one end then rotating down the other end to close the press...those beam must weigh tons. That save the plumping/electrical thing you have going on at present.

      Hmm, yeah the I-beams weigh 400lb each. So the top half is 800lbs! And the pressure in the press can go up to ~90psi, which when applied over a 12in by 72in area is over 75,000lbs. It would have to be a crazy strong hinge…. Thanks for the comment!

      @@jdritchey5773 Well, you'll notice I put ''Hinge'' in parentheses. I was thinking more of it in a kind of ''resting pocket'', like plates on 3 sides to hold it place then a scissor jack at the other end to lower it, with a similar pocket at the jack end to guide it down.
      A simpler option, put 3 or so scissor jack under the mold and jack it up against the I-beam.

      @@rickden8362 Pressure distribution is the name of the game. I missed one of the 1x1's on a recent press and broke my mold! I'd stick with air pressure and bladders. With 3 scissor lifts that can lift a ton you would only get ~6000lb force. Need about 35 to get to an equivalent air pressure level. Cheers!

      So, after making this video I changed that feature. This stuff is 6", but the updated version I think is 4". I did have to run 3 hoses for the smaller diameter, but it bends nicer and fits the press better. You'll see the new stuff in my next video :-).
