Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto: All 10,000 Gates Explored 夜の京都伏見稲荷神社

  • Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's "Shrine of 10,000 'Torii'" or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
    HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
    Who cleans all these gates?
    John wants to know.
    WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
    KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
    HOW TO GET THERE:
    Here's the Google Map goo.gl/maps/qXalt
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.
*Ranked no.1 by Trip Advisor 2014 rankings on Japanese Atttractions

Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan and one shrine in particular is buzzing with more foreign tourists than anywhere else, Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine! It's known as the shrine with 1,000 gates (called torii) but there are actually over 10,000 spread over a 4km path up a mountain. We learn about the history from the shrine's priest and find a way to enjoy it without the crowds. Come by rental cycle and climb the mountain at night!

Your vids are great. It shows that you've lived in Japan for a while. I'm american and I can honestly say that more than half of us are douches, but your innocence (in a good way) makes this program feel like its for children . its refreshing to see something thats not vulgar for a change.

You're absolutely right there. Some of these video's are just so cheesy, although that doesn't mean they're not great, they're straight to the point, detailed and overall just fun to watch since the host presents himself in such a friendly way

We want to thank you for all the videos that you put online.
You helped us a lot to make our Japan trip a memorable one; we went see this shrine at night, ate those okonomiaky in Hiroshima and went to the gatchapong shop at Haquiabara, such a wonderful experience! We spent some time at takeshita street and enjoy the vending machines :-)
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us, you made our trip more fun and enjoyable. Continued posting new materials to keep our memories alive. Hope to meet you someday in Japan!

There was this cute black cat that was so friendly. I went there at night and she (not sure about the gender) welcomes me and climbs at me at the fifth stop. Then i went the next day early morning and there she was again, warmly meowing to me and asking for a rub. I have pictures hehe.

I've just returned from my trip to Japan and I must say my visit to the Inari jinja is one my most memorable moments in Kyoto. Me and my little nephew tried to climb up the the mountain without realizing how far it would go. We've reached the 3rd to the last station before deciding to head back down because of lack of time.(his mom is waiting down below) It's quite tiring but it was very fun. I plan on climbing it all the way next year.
I enjoyed your stint at NHK Tokyo eye. Glad that you're in RUclips. Keep up great work.

inisipisTV Thanks, I enjoyed doing the TOKYO EYE program. When the producers change (every 3 years or so) so do many of the people reporters. Glad you remember it :D
It really was a hike!! At night, it's easy because it's not crowded. I think I walked a little faster too because it was really creepy. Met nice people from Spain, Sweden, the US and UK. Loads of couples on dates! I bet your little nephew went down those steps really fast! I got back to the station from the top in less than 30 minutes I think. Kept thinking there were creatures outside the tunnel!! Thanks for watching and the nice comment! -John

I was there last month. It was my last stop for a Kyoto day trip out of Osaka. I too went at night because it's 24 hours while Kinkakuji closes at 5.
I met some cats and read the sign warning me about wild boar. I heard a rustling in some bushes and walked fast away from it. I missed a stair and fell down scraping my knees and getting my skirt all bloody. What an adventure. I got bandaids and a hot dog from the train station at the entrance. 😅

I'd love to! I've a budget to produce only 1 show per month but perhaps I can propose more for 2015. I really REALLY enjoy doing this and would like to get more points of views from other people, better equipment, a consistent cameraman (I used a tripod for this) and really take this show to another level so EVERYONE can enjoy it even more. The more popular the show becomes, the more access to amazing location I can get. When I saw the show is primarily on RUclips, most locations won't give me access but that's changing with more media exposure for this show inside Japan. I've ha d a lot of luck building the show the last year to set up for a deeper program in 2015 and beyond.
So happy to hear you'll make the trip to Japan in January! Def let me know how you're trip went. Drop me a message via the facebook.com/onlyinjapantv page. -John

Takes time and money but I'd love to do 2 a month plus a more casual onsite video to answer viewer questions. It's good to do this on location and provide more info / more background about the original report. I'll know if we can do this by March 2015 :) Fingers crossed! Awesome!! Thank you so much for always watching and supporting Cory Agra Really appreciate it! -John

"The Doorway Effect" is the phenomenon that causes your brain to erase what is on your mind when you pass through a portal. It's why you forget why you walked into a room. Passing through the portal resets your thought process. Passing through so many gates would surely cleanse your mind of all your troubles! It is perhaps why people find this temple so relaxing?

I looked for this video because you said in your *GO video, you made this video and somehow, this is not doing as well as the other travel videos. Then you said, the videos about shrines in general is not really doing well with youtube’s algorithm. AND you’re right, I have been watching your videos for quite some time but i haven’t seen this one. so now, I’m here enjoying your video. XD I have been to this shrine 6 years ago and we left at around 6pm. It was pretty dark at that point and was kind of hard to navigate. XD Wouldn’t want to run into floating flames. XD

cearzz moore awesome way to get around. If you take the buses, you're stuck in a lot of traffic -- this way, you can stop EVERYWHERE on the way.

Just went up there today and it was beautiful. My legs are killing me though. I went up, no stopping and i felt like a true god when i reached the top. A god with asthma that is, since i was so out of breath i nearly threw up. Still, i recommend it to everyone since its a very beautiful and memorable experience

Watching this brings so much fond memories of my visit to Japan last year. Riding the bike in Kyoto was definitely a highlight. Such a shame though I missed going to Fushimi Inari due to time constraints. Can't wait to go back next year!

I managed to visit Inari Shrine when I visited Japan. I didn't manage to see it all. It is a great place. It reminds me "Memoirs of a Geisha" movie.

Adrian Matos there are over 32000 shrines called "Inari shrine" in Japan. If you are talking specifically about the Fushimi Inari grand shrine, you better use the official name.
