Siward sailed from Denmark serving as one of Canute's generals - He became the Earl of Deira(later York) from 1023 to 1033, became Earl of Northumbria in 1041 until his death in 1055. "Young Siward" is a fictionalized version of his eldest son Osbeorn, who was born in Scandinavia to an unknown mother. Siward's sister Sybil/Suthen was married to King Duncan and was the mother of Malcolm and Donald. When Macbeth took over as King, Siward helped regain the Scottish throne for his nephew Malcolm. Siward sent Osbeorn(Young Siward) into Scotland as commander of his army, and Osbeorn fell while fighting Macbeth's forces. Osbeorn did not duel Macbeth personally, but it does add drama to the retelling! The Northumbrian forces retreated to inform Siward his son had fallen, and he asked where did Osbeorn receive the fatal blow? And they replied that "He had died fighting in the glory of battle and was wounded by a blow to his frontside." Siward then replied that "He was gladdened to hear of this, that his son died a worthy death of a warrior." Siward then personally led his forces back into Scotland and crushed Macbeth's army and put Macbeth to flight, allowing his nephew Malcolm to retake the throne. One year later in 1055, Siward died of old age and complained of not dying in all the countless battles he had fought. When he felt death was near, it's reported that he ordered his servants to dress him in his full set of armor, his axe and shield before passing.

The fact that Malcom’s reaction to young siward’s death is more sincere than Macbeth’s to his own wife is quite interesting
I agree. Subtle, but very interesting. Macbeth has been hollowed out, cut off from humanity and his own humanity. Dehumanized. Like Voldemort, without the psychopathy.
