How to fix a failing Ford PTU for good

  • If you’re driving a Ford equipped with AWD, you may have experienced grinding, clunking, or chattering coming from undercar. Often, the source of those noises is a failed power transfer unit. Replacing the failed unit with another that’s not serviceable instantly puts an expiration date on the new part-the clock is ticking until the next replacement. End the cycle of endless replacements!

Don't fall for what this guy claims folks. We installed one of these ptu's at our shop because it was half the cost of a oem and a oem was a few days out.
Where do I start with the problems we had.. first the ptu would not fit because the case was physically at least a 1/4 inch thicker all the way around, cool right? No not cool had to grind a couple spots of the case down to even get it to fit onto the transmission without contacting the engine. Sweet all done with a slight modification. Go to install the lower bolt of the ptu and that wont fit because the case is so thick it is overlapping the bolt hole... get all done go for a test drive and come back to transmission fluid leaking everywhere out of the right axle shaft seal.
Okay now wtf..did we cut the seal installing the shaft? No, further diag uncovered that the seal in the ptu from the factory was installed backwards..... okay fine we will install a new oem seal. Drive it again and now we are leaking gear lube everywhere. Okay now wtf... apparently the gear lube was leaking from the vent of the ptu that had no baffle to stop fluid from slinging out.
At the end of the day Dorman reimbursed us and also paid us to install a oem ptu. For every solution Dorman has a problem.
Oh and our parts stores pulled these units off the self and Dorman did too due to many problems.
Good job Dorman. test your products next time.

Agreed, in the last 12 weeks I’ve had to change out the ptu in a 14 ford edge sport 3.7 AWD twice. Found out pass. side output shaft seal (on the ptu) was backwards. Cost us a lot of time & money…so frustrating.

Guys you should sticky a comment saying this is NOT FOR TWIN TURBO ECOBOOST ENGINES! This is only rated for the non-turbo engines. UNLESS you actually made one that can handle a twin turbo. When I was researching this 2 years ago, you advised that it's not for the turbo cars, if I put this unit on it that it will likely fail and that you didn't have a model made to handle the turbo charged engines. If that's changed, you might also want to make that clear to your customers.

I wanted to like this PTU but can buy Dorman Products anymore. I had one of these put in my 2015 Explorer by a shop, followed the break in procedure and it was leaking within 400 miles from the seal where the driveshaft mounts. I got a second one and it failed the exact same way. Doorman swapped out the first and after the second failure they said to go back with a ford unit. I got a new ford unit and it is working fine. Oriellys sent both back to Dorman on the same ticket and Dorman only gave me $400 to cover $1600 for labor on the two Dorman failures. Labor was high due to using a very good shop. Precision Transmission (They have tons of videos on RUclips) As much as this looks like a smart choice I can’t recommend it.

What about all the Chevy and dodges that eat camshafts and lifters? At least the ptu is a simple fix that anyone that can turn a wrench can do themselves. Second if you would have changed your fluid and maintained it then it wont go bad. I've got 160k on mine and works great. But then again I'm smart enough to know if it has oil in it then it needs changed. But some people have no common sense.. just look at who they vote for! It's said that 99.9% of ALL Joe Biden voters cannot work on or repair their own vehicles they just expect the government to pay for it or better yet a large company like Ford.

I do very much appreciate the response I received below, but see that the PTU featured in this video is model 600-234XD, and is apparently only for 2015 and earlier Fords. My two cars ('16 Taurus and '18 Explorer) are being shown to use what looks like a factory unit PN 600-239. I am unaware of any across-the-board changes Ford made to the PTU in 2016 that would prevent the 234XD from being used in 201 +.
I would just like a better explanation, if possible, because I did already have to have the PTU in the Explorer replaced, so obviously there was no magic cure in 2016.

I have a 2017 Fusion Sport 2.7L TT. It only came with AWD. When I first heard of lubrication possible issues, I checked it out. My PTU DOES have a full plug and a drain plug and it also has an oil cooler albeit a small one. I drained the OE fluid which, at approx 10,000 mi. had started to turn very dark but far from the thick black goo I'd seen in so many videos or pictures. I have incorporated a drain/fill along with the engine oil for the last 3 services (5000 mi intervals) and each drain shows relatively clean fluid and equally importantly, NO axle seal leaks. I strongly recommend changing the PTU fluid on a regular schedule of at LEAST 10000 mi. Use a high quality full synthetic; I prefer Amsoil. Note: this car is not stock and now puts out approx 380hp and 420lbft of torque due some mods I have made e.g. tune, larger intercooler, larger throttle body, low restriction air intake, etc

Your video was so helpful I went ahead and bit the bullet! Difference between what Ford offered and your Dorman wasn't much. I had my local mechanic install a Dorman on my 2013 Ford Edge. I paid $3000 for the entire repair which from all the calls I made was around average. I noticed the old PTU smell right away after the work and thought it was the old PTU fluid burning off? Or so I thought. So it's been a couple weeks and while changing my oil, I also wanted to see my new Dorman but noticed it was leaking fresh fluid. The fluid was dripping off, translucent and amber color. The old fluid was black sludge. I checked my trans fluid and it's topped off and good color. Off the top of your head, what do you think about this? I'm taking it back Monday and just wanted your opinion or insight before I get there. I hope it's just a lose bolt or something. Thanks for any help.

    • @DormanProducts

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. When you took it back, did they notice where the fluid was coming from or the cause of the leak.

    • @workinwithme
      @workinwithme 4 месяца назад

Thanks for getting back to me, I could see the passenger side seal, and trans connection weren't leaking. It was coming from the vent and it's too hard to over-fill given the location of the fill hole. So I think it was my fault. I got sick (COVID) and couldn't take it back this past Monday but while watching videos I came across the Importance of good tire wear and how it relates to a PTU. The gear stress of uneven treadwear and how it can cause the PTU gears to turn at different speeds, builds up friction/heat for longer than the PTU was designed for. I had only 2 tires replaced in the past and also didn't keep up with the rotation the way I should. I don't know the diameters between tire diameters but I can plainly see the difference in the wear. Now that I understand this point, I realize it was my fault. Luckily my PTU is very new. I will add more fluid then take it up to get 4 new tires and also get a 4 wheel alignment. I feel like this will solve the leak. If you don't hear back from me then that is what happened.

That's what I did. Scary since I never did something like that before, but actually not too bad. I had to use a ratchet instead of a tap wrench for creating the threads though because the exhausts got in the way of the tap wrench when rotating. Then I put in a 1/4 inch NPT plug with some permatex thread sealant and all is well. Only had to do this on the rear diff though.

I heard a mechanic say that the PTU's (PTO's) also fail because some owners replace only two tires at the time, and that unevenly worn tires cause accelerated wear on the internals of the unit. Until now, I only heard that was a problem with some Jeep transffer case/transmissions, but never Ford. Is it true, or just a myth?
