Just sold my '02 Prerunner with the 3.4/auto. Had lots of power with the A/T, so I can't imagine what a 5-speed would feel like. Replaced it with a 90's 4Runner 4x4 auto with 145k original miles, but has the 3.0L. Big difference in power.
The clarity is fine but a little too jerky when you're driving and not quite the right angle. A good look at the steering wheel though. Keep playing with it. I'm sure you'll fine tune it.
