Volkswagen Golf GTE Review: The Hot Hatch Goes Hybrid
The latest Volkswagen Golf GTE aims to blend hot hatch thrills with plug-in hybrid efficiency. But can this electrified GTI challenger really deliver the best of both worlds?
On paper, the Golf GTE's specs seem promising. Under the hood is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 150 hp, coupled with an 116 hp electric motor. Total system output is a healthy 245 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque - enough to propel the GTE from 0-62 mph in just 6.7 seconds.
That zippy acceleration is on par with the traditional Golf GTI, yet the GTE can also travel up to an estimated 37 miles on electric power alone at speeds up to 80 mph. Opt for the upgraded 12.8 kWh battery pack and electric range increases to around 40 miles.
Aesthetically, the Golf GTE looks the business with its sporty body kit, honeycomb accents, and blue contrast trim inside and out. The cabin also receives plush sports seats, ambient lighting, and the latest digital cockpit. More luxury and tech features come standard compared to the base Golf.
On the road, the GTE demonstrates impressive performance when operating in its hybrid mode, with brisk acceleration from a stop. The DSG transmission fires off rapid upshifts, and there's a nice helping of low-end torque courtesy of the electric assist.
Driven sensibly, the GTE can return outstanding fuel economy in the 50+ mpg range thanks to its electrified powertrain. However, enthusiasts will want to keep the battery topped up to access maximum performance. If the battery is depleted, the GTE feels slightly flat and uninspiring when running just on the gas engine.
The GTE's stiffened suspension tuning, low-profile tires, and precise steering make it quite agile through the twisties. But the ride quality is very firm, bordering on harsh over rough pavement. Wind and road noise are also noticeable at highway speeds.
Priced from around $36,500 in the U.S., the Golf GTE commands a significant premium over the standard Golf - you're paying about a $10K upcharge for the hybrid powertrain and added performance/tech content. The main question is whether those benefits are worth the added cost for shoppers.
Overall, the Volkswagen Golf GTE makes a strong case as an enticing, well-rounded hybrid hot hatch. It delivers a nice balance of performance and eco-friendliness when operating on electric power. Just be prepared to pay a premium for its electrified thrills.
