I did the quest thinking it was just a basic world quest 😃 and Mualani being here didn't ring a bell. I was like "she's in the world quest" 😭 And I was just doing that for Natlan reputation so I'm surpised story quest still count for that

As some of the comments pointed out already, I was really scared that it was just gonna be another *"The real treasure was the friends we made along the way."* And of course, it was a bit frustrating. But this time, the way that they executed it was very different. We start off the quest viewing this journey through the eyes of the traveler, then Mualani, and finally, Viramdra. Throughout the entire quest, Viramdra questioned everything that Mualani did, objecting to her decisions, and getting himself in trouble. This, was really frustrating. However, keep in mind that this was only frustrating, BECAUSE we viewed it from Mualani and the Traveler's perspective. Think about it from a researcher's point of view. Everything in his life is defined by results and the objective truth. He has spent hours learning and understanding the local geography, hydrology, and ecology, only for someone who isn't in the scientific field to tell him to do the exact opposite of what his research hypothesises. Of course he would object, any self-respecting scientist would do the same. However, this is exactly what the original guide planned on. The entire point of reaching the mysterious island was by coming to an agreement, despite the differences in opinion. Think about this: If Viramdra just went along with whatever Mualani said, nobody would have seen the golden island or Vulcanite, they wouldn't have volcanic dust on them, and they would have never reached the end of their journey. If Mualani listened to everything Viramdra said, she would have missed every opportunity to even reach the hollow earth, and not even come close to unraveling the truth. As *cheesy* as it is, the journey proved one particular thing. *There is never one objective truth.* As they discussed at the campfire, every single person has a different thing to say about the meaning of the journey that they were on. By the end of it, neither Mualani nor Viramdra were upset or disappointed, even when they realised the treasure was an illusion. By overcoming their differences, they both came to realise that the most important part of their journey, was the person by their side. Which was, ironically enough, Paimon's answer, so I guess she really is Teyvat's best little guide ❤
The execution this time around was still so sloppy though. Like i get the point behind it and all, and i like mualani a lot so far, but this quest really did the scholar guy dirty. His reseach is basically plagiarized and he cant do anything about it, so he has an idea for something to write his thesis about. Keep in mind that thesis papers in sumeru are hell to write. So he goes all the way to natlan, just to not be able to do the one thing he already put so much time and effort into. It definitely doesn't help that Mualani wasn't giving the group the information for them to be able to understand that easier. But yeah, then they compare what the scholar is going through to the first chief, and it is legit just... not even the same situation for the most part. The first chief did what he did because of his sense of adventure and to just chart out more lands and all that, and thats fine, but the scholar was basically robbed and wanted to be able to have something else for him to be able to do his job. In the scholar's case, the results DO matter. Mualani's words at the end of the quest feels so disengenuous because of the fact that the results absolutely do matter here.

The scholar wanted to be able to get the material for his research, wasn't able to get it no matter how they tried, and then they go back. He literally got nothing for his journey that he went on to search for one specific thing. And don't get me wrong, I also get that they were going for the idea of the scholar's outlook on life and journeys to change (the camping scene sets this up), but the payoff wasn't all that well thought out. Like the point of the end of a journey being your home is nice, but it doesn't actually prove him wrong if the journey ends without actually earning anything. And I understand the part about the chiefs journey and message, and I know its a different fictional culture with its own ethics. But it still feels wrong to have the journey to this island purposefully hidden away. Some people will try to journey to the mysterious island and change their outlook on life, and thats cool. But others will likely just end up dead for trying.
