I read a study recently. (wish I could find it) It's apparently not necessarily good for you to constantly have crystal clear urine. It concluded that urine would optimally have a very light tint. It also concluded that the color of urine isn't an accurate way to determine that you're dehydrated or not.
I was going to say, my water tastes better after sitting out, because it loses that chlorine taste. Then he went and explained exactly that process. I always have a coffee mug of water that I fill in the bathroom every time it gets low, and sip on it through the night. The water is always grosser right after it comes out of the faucet, and becomes sweeter and less chemical-y after a few hours. I suppose I don't mind the extra CO2 in the water as much as I dislike the Chlorine. It may help that I don't live in a very urban area, so the water doesn't have too much CO2 to absorb.
Danielle Spargo (and anyone else interested)... On a serious-ish side note, I might advise that you are in pretty good surroundings if your water can be allowed to reach a warm room temperature and still taste reasonably good. (okay, some people don't care for the authentic taste of water... oddly)... But follow me on this one. I live in a particularly rural area, and my water is spring water (natural all the way)... I'm quite familiar with the local geology, and regularly test it anyway... BUT I've been to many cities, and I always let the first glass of water from a tap sit long enough to be proper room temp'... If it still passes my nose and taste tests, I can trust it. If not... I worry and test it, or just buy the damned bottled variety... You see, it's not just the water you're tasting. It's mostly all the "other stuff" in it. Water has a taste (sorta), but at the treatment centers, they purify it, add chlorine (highly toxic) and some places still use hypochoric acid (even worse toxic)... Then they leave it in settling pools, filter it, and add "proprietary minerals" to "renaturalize" the flavor so you'll actually drink it... On top of all that jazz (and I'm over-simplifying because... comment section)... you've got miles and miles of pipes that it runs through before you even see it coming out of a tap or garden hose (most cities it's all the same water)... SO you might be really well advised to do similar things by practice. I applaud you in your current practice with the cup...btw... but now you have a fairly thought out reason (or several) as to why you should definitely continue. And the Romans used lead to sweeten wine and water, so... yeah... :o)
30 years or so ago the water on the farm i grew up on started tasting funny, turned out a few weeks earlier a possum got into one of the 4 massive tanks up on the hill and drowned, the tank was isolated from the others and drained and cleaned out. so, thats a thing that happens
Elderly people also tend to fail the turgor test, but for other reasons, like my mom, she is over 70, but not chronically dehydrated, just old with a shortage of collagen in skin.
3:00 _"You've lost too many of your electrolytes, mostly through sweat and urine, and without the right electrolyte balance your cells can't maintain the voltages they need to activate muscles like your heart. Low sodium levels can also cause your brain to swell. And now you're well beyond the point of needing a glass of water…"_ - Hyponatremia (low concentration of sodium in blood and other bodily fluids) isn't the direct consequence of dehydration, but usually the consequence of either overhydration (e.g., by drinking too much water you're contributing to dilute the sodium in your body, especially if your renal function is diminished, such as when doing strenuous exercise), or of a rapid and incorrect rehydration after loss of fluid (with sodium), such as through you sweat. The sodium concentration in your sweat is typically lower than in your blood and other extracellular fluids, and much lower if you've been properly acclimated to a hot environment, since after heat acclimation the sodium concentration (and of other electrolytes) in your sweat will be much lower.
Seeing the slow motion of the cat it looked like it was bending the tip of it's tongue inward like it was "lifting" the water up. Could that be how it drinks water? Just more delicately than a dog?
When I got to the part about water going stale I was just glad I’m living in a first world country that doesn’t need to put more than 0,3 mg/l chlorine in my drinking water…
Peeing by sound reminds me of a woman tea lady who demonstrated to my friend how men hearing the tea poured from some hight tended to leave for the urinals.
So like does drinking soda aka carbonated water actually satiate your thirst? And by that I mean if we drink carbonated water do we actually get water that are bodies can use?
I once went two and a half days without anything passing through my mouth at all, and I think I only got to the moderate stage of dehydration. But I was so glad to drink water again. And I have never experienced water going bad. I sometimes leave water in my nalgene for days or even weeks at a time and, and I still drink it. Maybe you guys are just too picky? What if people need to pee when they hear water, because their body realizes that means that there is good drinking water nearby, and therefore it is safe to discharge your urine?
How does a flammable gas (hydrogen)x2 and a gas that's needed if flames are to burn(oxygen) make one of the most unflammable substances? dang you science!
Static electricity: Rub a plastic rod (preferably acrylic) with wool or fur. Run a thin stream of water from a tap (faucet). Bring the charged rod near the running stream of water (not in it) - the water will bend. Ta da! You're a water bender.
There's a point during water staleness in which it turns better than normal water. This time is usually during the hours of 12-3am. This water, know as "night water" is proven to be the most refreshing beverage to exist.
Hello, SciShow! Do you think you could make a video explaining the current knowledge of cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture at 19 and after learning so much about them, I would love for a bigger audience to learn of them!
i have seen your message a lot of times here. i hope scishow makes a video about it. If they don't (because of busy schedule), i will try to make one for you as well :)

Hey people I'm a medic... when you dont drink water you do get a big old IV and some fluids and once you're feeling better. Some desk jockey from the billing department which no medic knows anything about sends you a bill with a few to many zeros for a liter of ph balanced water.
One thing I don't understand, is in the last video hank said "drink when you're thirsty" if I did that, I'd probably have about 32-40 ounces, which I know isn't technically enough
Wait so you want me to have a whole gallon of waters (3.7 liters) worth and still have my pee be a light yellow? There's no way in hell my pee won't be crystal clear if I have 3.7 liters worth of water in a day.
The running water thing mostly works. As an X-ray tech I often had to employ this. There is a test that allows doctors to look for blockages, bladder masses or kidney stones. It requires the patient to drink water that contains iodine which shows up white under X-rays so you can see all the structures. Thing is the ureters (the tubes that lead from your kidneys to your bladder) and your bladder have to be completely empty for this to work. Generally we would ask patients to pee just before the exam but sometimes, either because they were only partly filled or out of worry about the exam, they wouldn't be able to. So.. we'd put them in the room and run the water and that worked most of the time.
patient: doctor doctor what has happened to me! hank: Your dying a little bit! patient: but why? hank: mostly because your dying. patient: that was very helpful
It would be neat to have a video correlating heat and olfaction. Michael mentioned how cold water has less flavor (through olfaction). versus warm water. This is the seeming reason that food tastes best hot. There is a lifehack to place stinky shoes in the freezer. More information about temperature and olfaction would be great for everyone as well as anosmics like myself.
I've gone more than a week, more than once, without eating because I had to choose between food and bills. I chose what adults and parents always choose. I paid what I owed and lost weight. I bought my prescriptions, paid my electric bill, water bill and mortgage. It wasn't fun, but that's what it was like to be a lower middle-class American. Then I got laid off and got a job at Lowe's, where I wish I had applied twenty years ago. I've been promoted four times in two years and now make almost twice the living wage I was making when I first got hired. Lowe's pays over $11 an hour to start.
The end of sleep and initial waking period are the time at which your body's water levels are at their lowest naturally. I tend to start my day with at least 2 large glasses of water +/- tea. A corollary of this is that when we (often the cardiologists or respiratory physicians) are diuresing a patient (drying them out, usually with frusemide or the like) we need to be careful about the timing. Classically they are given early eg 8AM and 10AM - as we try to avoid having people peeing all night. However, one can often get a better diuresis by waiting a bit later - when the patient is less dry.
125oz of water? That's almost SIXTEEN 8oz glasses. 3.7 litres is almost a gallon! If you're doing hard labor that might make sense, but otherwise that's WAY TOO MUCH water. Here's a peer reviewed article from the _American Journal of Physiology_ that says to *just drink when you're thirsty:* ajpregu.physiology.org/content/283/5/R993+
Thank you scishow, My science teacher has an assignment where you have to do a summary of a scientific article. I did it on your video about disposing garbage into volcanos. Thank you scishow for the 100% on my science grade!
The Turgor Test is only effective if you don't already have a skin affecting condition such as Ehler's Danlos. I can drink as much water as is healthy in a day or more or less but the results are the same; my skin takes a few seconds to bounce back due to Ehler's Danlos Syndrome (which, by the way, would make for an absolutely fascinating episode). The syndrome affects my joints, heart, and collagen. This can affect the elasticity of my skin making it stretch further and take longer to properly reposition itself. Just a side note. Again, Ehler's Danlos is a rare and mostly unknown condition that some have argued led to acrobatics and contortionists. It could make for a great episode. Edit: To be clear, I have Ehler's Danlos as well as 2 of my 3 siblings.
Cowcopter being on well water may do that. Higher mineral content and generally no chlorine as groundwater is clear of most pathogens. (I'm a water operator and have my bachelor's degree in water management)
Not sure the pee association is quite right. Makes more sense to me that the brain hears running water and thinks it's perfect time to drink water. Pee to get rid of wastes and use the water source to replace the lost water. Rather than association it's an instinct like avoiding fire. That's just my thought though.
Question 6: Why does it cause some people who have the rare skin allergy known as "aquagenic urticaria"........My skin would like to know! . . . . .Tablets and treatment all failed
Question, if water is made of hydrogen and oxygen... and hydrogen is flammable.. and you can't burn something without oxygen, why is water not flammable?
4mg/l of free chlorine gas in drinking water?! WHO guidelines allow only 0.3mg/l. ClO2 and ClO3 anions are allowed in 0.7mg/l quantities. In my tap water there's no free Cl, and both anions are about 0.45mg/l total (Water in my city is disinfected with ClO2 not free Cl). I suppose 4mg/l will be easy detectable by smell and taste and wouldn't be nice. Or healthy. YUCK!
Wait wait wait, hold on 2013 Hank, so according to this chart 2:45 I've always been at least mildly dehydrated MY ENTIRE LIFE? And pee is supposed to be clear, dafaq? I'm VERY confused.
I did a paper on hydration, and ran into hyponatremia. I was an infantryman and was told to drink 1 quart every hour when it got over 90 degrees, around Sand Hill, Ft. Benning, Ga (E 2/54) , that usually happen by 8am, Our MRE's have a "Ton" of salts, and I didn't think much of it. A few years later I'm now Disabled and partake in my states Medical Cannabis Program, I heard about a "Cannabis User" who drank so much water he caused brain damage. Can you do a Hyponatremia video?
Unprocessed food contains usually about 70% to 95% of water in mass. Think about it... Plants and animals also depend on water, so their bodies are made primarily from it. If You ate raw fruit or veggies You deliver about 85-95% of water in mass You consumed... So really, You don't need to drink those liters of water they're telling You. If You deliver ~2000kcal from food You deliver also (-in average-) about 400-600ml of water (-that is if You're not on some special diet like ketogenic when You consume mainly fats which are poor sources of water... only about 5-10% water in mass-). Also... we actually inhale some water from air... Just watch Your pee color and if it's too orangey, like deep orange, You should drink more. Every human has different needs for water as it depends on climate, activity, diet, body mass, and lots of things, so don't follow blindly after those internet recommendation.

How does reflective fabric work? Especially the ones that are brighter when wet?
Regarding the 2nd video:
If a glass of water goes stale overnight does it become salt water? Because it is no longer fresh water.

You guys should do a video on why cracked bells don't ring.
Tbh growing up that 'stale' water was my favorite. I would make deliberate choices to try and keep my water tasting that way when I could.
Why does Michael always look like he has just got into work but needs to quickly hurry off to catch a bus?
A whole gallon of water for guys or 3.7 liters. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more than i drink.
Jo King omg same...
That intro tho 😂

My cat used to dip her paw in the water bowl and lick her paw to drink.
Jimmy McInerney my rabbit just splashes his paws in water bowls...
That's so cute
My kitty does the same!
My cat used to eat this way. He passed away last June but he taught my other cat who occasionally does this still
I had one who did that, too! She'd lick the drops off and then dip her paw in for more until she was done. It really was cute! 🐾

If you boil extra water, you can put it in bottles and freeze them for future use.
Sadly people don't do this because they think tap water is infinite
Toxic Killa But the question is will it still be boiling after I defrost it? Cuz otherwise it's not worth my time.
But then you end up with solidified dihydrogen monoxide. Dihydrogen Monoxide has been known to kill millions of people.

Why can't water be compressed? I know it expands when forming a solid, but why is it's liquid form the most dense?
I think it's because of the crystalline structure that water molecules form into, which makes them less dense it

Stephen I used to think you were awkward and corny. Now you're my 2nd favorite host right after Hank. I love you, keep making us laugh!
no wonder so many drinks are 'best served chilled'
Seeing the toilet makes me have to pee or poo more as i arrive
Or healthy. YUCK!
Omg I'll literally die without water 😂😂😂
Wow Yasuo Mains really?
😂🔫
Cx
0:21 I have made a surprising number of videos about water

Such a Bill Nye type of opening
Does Micheal still work there?
I did a paper on hydration, and ran into hyponatremia. I was an infantryman and was told to drink 1 quart every hour when it got over 90 degrees, around Sand Hill, Ft. Benning, Ga (E 2/54) , that usually happen by 8am, Our MRE's have a "Ton" of salts, and I didn't think much of it. A few years later I'm now Disabled and partake in my states Medical Cannabis Program, I heard about
a "Cannabis User" who drank so much water he caused brain damage.
