Funny story. So this is around the time me and my Dad would play the THQ UFC games and the WWE games together. In the UFC games I would always use Brock Lesnar and his wrestling was crazy good. So I would end up beating my Dad a lot with him. He'd always get me back in the wrestling games though. So when WWE 12 came out we tried Universe mode and had a match. He won in our first match and Brock immediately runs out and starts beating him down. He was freaking out "I CANT ESCAPE THIS GUY" We were both howling with laughter. Such a great memory for me.
I liked SvR 2011. It had scenarios play out, like Rey Mysterio bought a front row ticket then jumps the barricade to beat your ass. It also had the allies and enemies system the current games have but it would actually work. If you were enemies with Orton, some matches he would interfere or run in. Also I believe factions and teams could form and disband just based off what happened in matches. It was just really cool and super fun.
2011 had good cut scenes but that Universe mode was definitely the worse by far. No real storylines that made any sense the booking logic didn’t make much sense. Sure if you had allies or enemies you’d get certain cutscenes and or get support or attacked during matches, but let’s be real, it was garbage compared to the following three games

I have to agree! I even played a lot of WWE 13 and 2k14 when I was younger, and I get a lot of nostalgia from them! Surprisingly I never played 12, though.
2k basically ruined it. In my opinion, it was probably one of the worst things that could have happened to the WWE game license aside from maybe EA getting it.

It took till 19 or so, as someone else mentioned. The games have always been a roller coaster. Some are better than others. I usually wait a few years between releases these days.

Fun fact. This reminded me of something in 2K18 that pisses me off to this day. Despite not having a draft option in universe mode, there were Superstar Shake-Ups (basically drafts) in MyCareer. So they acknowledged it but didn't alow for it to happen outside of that mode which pisses me off

Really? Vader looks realistic as hell in 2K23. For some reason they nail the dead wrestlers' faces but can't get the NXT people right. Grayson Waller is bigger than Bron Breakker for some reason.

I got fucking war flashbacks seeing Smash come out. No matter what I did, he KEPT ON ATTACKING MY CHAMPIONS. I set all my legends to their own brand with no show so that Universe wouldn't debut them as "free agent signings" but Smash just did not give a solitary fuck.

Years ago I gave away my copy of WWE '12. I thought it was broken because I couldn't advance to the Elimination Chamber PPV in the Hero Story. It turns out that was a common glitch, and all you had to do was change your CAW's moves to the default moveset. Now I feel like a dork, because that game was the second wrestling game I ever got, and I buried so much time into it.
Looking back at WWE '12, it's fucked up to think about how PS3 and Xbox 360 got this same game with updated rosters until 2K17. And I know it for a fact because I own all of them except 2K15.
The only thing I didn't like about this Universe Mode was that you couldn't vacate chanpionships or you couldn't make anyone inactive... The cutscenes were awesome though.
It amazes me listening to the NL boyz and the Deadlock boyz talk about all the different WWE games because after Here Comes the Pain, they all pretty much start blending together for me.

Yes. It 100% had the best universe mode. It started going downhill with ‘13 unfortunately. Even 2011 was better than the 2K Universe Modes. It felt so fresh and was still very fun. But ‘12 perfected that.
