Osaka Sensei came to Scotland as guest of Sensei Masao Kawasoe and I had the opportunity to give some massage to him...he is pure muscle, years of correct training under Sensei Nakayama in Japan.

I remember him coming to our dojo in Santa Rosa with a team from Japan. 1995. Boy was that one of my best days. We did a round Robin. I went through everybody twice. 36 fights. 18 first round. And Sensei Callahan wanted to see if I could do it again. And I did. Beat 18 student in a 1 point match. Even the guy from Japan. One of the most dynamic day I had in Shotokan. Not the only time I’ve done that. And yes skill has a lot to do with it. But I’m finding out it is more of the indomitable spirit of Shotokan. The Spirit of Budo. Something very intangible.

Hopefully my 50yr old knees will hold up.

Iain Hamilton key to knee health is correct exercises and recognizing muscle imbalance and then remeding it. Out here down under, at my dojo we have many karatekas in their 50s 60s and even 80s. Its also important to train at a dojo where you will be taught things correctly and they would respect your abilities. Many dojos train into injury becausing they are pursuing the be the best attitude.

I will also add that it's important to understand your own bodies ability. Everyone is different, I know people who are in 60s and are fitter than 20 year olds. Know when you need rest and listen to your body. A key indicator for knee weakness is caving of the knees inwards or wobbling while moving from one stance to another.

Just started training at the relatively advanced age of 57. My instructor says sensei Nakayama is the benchmark.

Karate has evolved in many different ways. But if you want to learn shotokan specifically then yes, the older JKA videos are the best.
Its not real life applicable but just really good exercise. To make it real life applicable kata needs to be changed into jutsu.
Wish you the best on your journey!

yeah, this is achieved through relaxing the upper body as much as you can. it's very hard to develop this 'state' of body dynamics but once you do it's an amazing feeling. Very powerful feeling !
