I’ve recently taken on my dads yard, it has a bunch of weeds, crab grass and different types of grass that grow all around the yard. I agree Anthony, I'm a recovery first, redo second kind of guy. 1st, with you being in Maryland what type of grass do you have? I was recommended the Scotts Turf Builder. Bonus S. Southern weed & feed f2 to use on my grass. Congrats on the new home and lawn. Glad you found my channel as well. Happy to have ya here. I’m not a fan of using much of any herbicides in the first year with new sod. It means some weeds will just have to be put up with. Using an organic fertilizer is always a safe route to take if you’re new to lawn care. When it comes to synthetic fertilizers, you’ll need to check with your state’s laws. I prefer to use a balanced triple 10 to lightly feed it followed up with organic. The weed and feeds have fert and herbicide in one product. I’m not a fan of them. I prefer to keep the two steps separate. Hope this helps. Crabgrass germinates when soil temps get into the 50s. A cheap ph / temp probe can be pretty helpful, but I put down prodiamine at the beginning of February in central SC to stay ahead of grassy weeds.
Yup. You’re right. We’ve been covered in an ice storm in Arkansas for the last few days. Still a ways to go until those temps. That’s why my spring pre emergent doesn’t usually go down until mid to late march. I also put one down at the beginning of the year to keep me covered in case. I’ve got one of those probes too. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Good advice and tips for a successful lawn season. One very important factor is getting a soil test done, at a minimum every other year. When would be a good time to try and get rid if some common bermuda I have in my celebration hybrid bermuda lawn? Thanks as always for the legit content!! And WPS...hoping for an elite 8
That would be awesome. Gonna be a fun week. It’d be pretty challenging to get that out unless it’s all in just one spot. I had common in my hybrid at my old house and just learned to deal with it. The hybrid slowly was taking it over. If you wanna try, I guess when its actively growing so you can try and kill it off. That way it’d take up the herbicide better. Still tough to get rid of. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I prefer to use post emergent when the the temps are warmer close to 80. Product works better with warmer temps. If you’re talking pre emergent, then now is probably a good time in your area. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
Good question. It's the last time in the winter or spring that temperatures drop to or below the freezing mark resulting in a frost or freeze. Typically in my area, it is around the second week of April. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
@@BudgetLawns just yankin' your chain. I have a buddy in the northern part of Arkansas and send him screen shots of my weather all the time. We had a couple weeks of temps in the upper 70's and low 80's already. My bermuda is already greening up.
Haha, got me. That's funny. I have a brother in Pasadena. He was telling me about the warm stretch y'all had recently. Ours is coming, but we've got a winter storm the next few days to deal with instead.
Are we still on for pre next week (rain permitting)? I’m chomping at the bits lol. Been on my hands and knees picking weeds out of my last falls sod 🤦♂️😂
I will not be putting any down until the first of next year or this fall at the earliest. New sod needs time to really root, so you want to make sure yours has. Pre emergent will hinder that. When it’s time I always plan it right before rain, so it will water the product in for me. Hope this helps. The first year is all about hand picking weeds. I find it enjoyable and therapeutic. Thanks so much as always.
Haven't looked yet this year, but I'm sure the fert market is challenging right now. So it wasn't at Lowes or Walmart? If I just absolutely couldn't find it anywhere, I'd prolly go with the triple 13. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya.
Just moved into a house and getting a dead tree out in the front yard. I am a complete noob to this stuff, I am looking to level and add some seed there in the spring time but is it okay to use a pre-emergent when seeding?
Congrats on the new house. No, do not use pre-emergent when seeding. If you have bermuda, you could let it fill in on it's own. Seeding or not depends on your grass type. Hope this help. Thanks for watching and the question.
i hear all of these lawn sites talking about pre-emergence, that it is time to put it down. but they seem to fail to mention that if you're having to put down new sod in bare places or reseeding bare spots that you can't put down pre-emergence because it won't let new sod or seed take root. if your lawn is not full and you need another growing season, you are going to have to depend on post emergence till next fall or when you lawn is thick and full. more work, i understand, but remember a full thick lawn makes weeds less of a problem.
Yup, you’re right. That’s why I mention that I won’t be doing all these on my new lawn this year. I’ve got several other videos that discuss this topic. For the first year, I likely won’t apply any herbicides, pre or post. I prefer to let it establish as naturally as possible before incorporating too many other practices. It’s a marathon, not a sprint in my book. Appreciate ya watching and commenting with some valuable information.
@@BudgetLawns i tried to listen the first time but i went back and listened again, and yes you did say that you wouldn't be doing it to your lawn, but for us butt heads it needs to be mentioned why. good luck with the channel.

@@BudgetLawns I'm a cool season grass area but a lot of the info that you give out is relevant to all grasses , it's just the timing that's different. At least if I move South I will know what to do with my warm season grass.
I'll usually do it monthly through September. But with fert prices having gone up, I've cut out an app or two and only do the triple 10. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Not a common practice to scalp it. Pre emergent and fertilizer both dependent on location. Pre emergent as soil temps approach 55 degrees. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
I don’t worry about weeds till temps start warming up. Still cold here this time of year. Here’s a vid I did last year on this topic. ruclips.net/video/tF9a3hvGTAA/видео.html Hope it helps. Appreciate ya watching.
I live in Southwest Missouri. Last fall I did aeration and overseeding. Unfortunately I had some seed wash off because of an unexpected storm. Now I have some spots with out grass. I don't know if I should apply pre-emergent because I want to throw seed in those spots. What do you recommend?
If you're going to throw seed down, don't apply pre-emergent. Sounds like you need another round of seed to fill in what was washed off last fall. That's what I'd likely do. Hope this helps.
@@BudgetLawns Hello...how about tenacity? I used it last fall for tall fescue. Not only is it a weed killer but its also a pre emergent but its safe for the fescue. It did a real good job preventing the weeds. I sprayed the tenacity and then layed the seed the same day. Fescue looks nice and no weeds.
@@jerico80 Yes, it has many advantages when it comes to applying/seeding/sodding etc. as it has multiple use properties. I'm sure it's a great product. Lots of folks use it and sing its praises. I only use products from the big box stores or my local hardware stores though so I predominately give info pertaining to those. Just a personal preference for me. Nothing against Tenacity though. Appreciate you bringing it up and watching.
Awesome. Welcome. That’s prolly a good idea. Two weeks might be ok if y’all get a warm stretch. It was really cold here last week so soil temps are still really low. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Never done it other some spot aeration and didn't notice much of a change. With bermudagrass, it's a different story than other turf types. I don't see it being a practice I will do often, if ever. Thanks for the question and watching. Appreciate ya!
The barrier is in the soil. When you scalp you go as law as possible without hitting dirt so you shouldn’t even be disrupting it. I’ve never had any issues. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
Hey dude, congrats on the new house! I’ll be putting down some pre-m in late March. I did a heavy app in January and one last fall to get that poa. I’m glad it’s still dormant though, I’m not ready to mow yet though… yeah, I’m being lazy …😅 Looking forward to your new lawn content.

You bet. Thank you. Just be careful, lots of videos (elsewhere on RUclips) take it really far. I keep it simple for the average homeowner here on budget lawns. Doesn’t take much to have a nice lawn.
@@BudgetLawns yeah I’ve noticed that a lot recently. Seems like majority are trying to push a certain brand or just make it overly difficult. I haven’t put down anything for the lawn yet. For starters I’m trying to remove all the leaves, aerate some spots with hard surfaces, then put down a pre emergent until it’s time to scalp, seed and fertilize. Im late to the show I think. I have a bunch of clover and thistle weeds I need to remove as well
You’re right about that. Sounds like you’ve got a good plan in place. With bermuda, you shouldn’t need to seed. I struggled with clover bad at my old home. Killed it off and let the Bermuda fill in on its own.
I didn’t put anything down last year either and didn’t struggle at all with weeds. I was fortunate to have neighbors that were weed free too so that helped. This lawn game can be a mystery sometimes. Thanks as always bro. Really appreciate your support.
I'm freaking sick and tired of hearing all this crap about Bermuda grass I don't have Bermuda grass I have Bahia grass and I live in Florida so I don't know what the crap you're talking about
Aaaaaaaand? What do you want me to do about it? I have bermuda. That's what I know, so that's what I talk about. Do you want me to just make stuff up about Bahia for you? I can do that but can't promise you any of it's going to be right. I'd have to go out and research the grass just as you are to learn more about it. And that ain't happenin'. Look, most of us that do lawn care on RUclips are just regular homeowners not formally educated in turfgrass science. We learned things just the way you're trying to and eventually started sharing our experiences online. Perhaps you should figure bahia out and start a channel to educate others on it. Appears there's a hole in the market for that. Whining about hearing about bermuda won't get you anywhere. I can assure you of that. Best of luck to you.

When it’s time I always plan it right before rain, so it will water the product in for me. Hope this helps. The first year is all about hand picking weeds. I find it enjoyable and therapeutic. Thanks so much as always.
I can’t seem to find the triple 10 but there’s plenty of triple 13. Would you recommend using that instead of the 10?
@@BudgetLawns Thanks for the reply! And Keep up the great work!
👍👊
i hear all of these lawn sites talking about pre-emergence, that it is time to put it down. but they seem to fail to mention that if you're having to put down new sod in bare places or reseeding bare spots that you can't put down pre-emergence because it won't let new sod or seed take root. if your lawn is not full and you need another growing season, you are going to have to depend on post emergence till next fall or when you lawn is thick and full. more work, i understand, but remember a full thick lawn makes weeds less of a problem.
Sorry I didn’t mention the why in this video. Here’s one I did last year that discusses not using pre emergent. Hope this helps. Appreciate you. ruclips.net/video/uMlSAzqYKi8/видео.html
I live South of Seattle this is gonna sound weird I took my ground temperatures yesterday and yesterday and it was at 47゚ already. Grass is growing already did my 1st Mo yesterday and put some sweet diamonds down In my newly renovated lawn from last fall. High planted RPR regenerating perennial ryecraft I planted RPR regenerating perennial rye grass.
Wow. That’s crazy. According to the web, we’re still hanging out in the upper 30s for soil temps. Long way to go here. Nice job on the reno. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
@@BudgetLawns I'm a cool season grass area but a lot of the info that you give out is relevant to all grasses ,
it's just the timing that's different.
At least if I move South I will know what to do with my warm season grass.
Appreciate that. Glad you still follow along. Always appreciate your comments.
@@BudgetLawns It's not always the grass that I like sometimes sometimes it is the person and their content.
Thank you 🙏 that means a lot.
Do you use the same fertilizer plan every two months? 10-10-10 and milorganite or just the initial spring application?
I'll usually do it monthly through September. But with fert prices having gone up, I've cut out an app or two and only do the triple 10. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
What if you have St.Augustine grass
Not a common practice to scalp it. Pre emergent and fertilizer both dependent on location. Pre emergent as soil temps approach 55 degrees. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
To chime in here. Lawn Care Nut has St Augustine down in Florida so you might want to check out his channel.
Should you scalp after or before you use preemergent?
I always scalp after pre emergent. 2-3 weeks later. Appreciate the question and ya watching.
hi mr feltner
Hiya!
ur mom
It’s -2 degrees here today sir not even close 😆
Yikes, you got that right! 🥶🥶 Thanks buddy!
@@BudgetLawns we’ve had a super cold winter ❄️ how about you guys in AR?
Got warmer this past week but had 10 inches of snow and wind chills around 0 just a week ago. Mid 30s out today.
What about the weeds in lawn now
I don’t worry about weeds till temps start warming up. Still cold here this time of year. Here’s a vid I did last year on this topic. ruclips.net/video/tF9a3hvGTAA/видео.html
Hope it helps.
You’re just north of me. To be able to best help you, I need to know what grass type you have. Thank you for watching and the question. Appreciate ya.
@@BudgetLawns tall fescue and I'm just north of Branson, Mo.
Little Rock here. I’m thinking of going a week ahead of you 🤔
Awesome. Welcome. That’s prolly a good idea. Two weeks might be ok if y’all get a warm stretch. It was really cold here last week so soil temps are still really low. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Do you recommend or against core aeration? I've considered doing it but it seems it depends on who you ask.
Never done it other some spot aeration and didn't notice much of a change. With bermudagrass, it's a different story than other turf types. I don't see it being a practice I will do often, if ever. Thanks for the question and watching. Appreciate ya!
Does scalping after your pre-m application hurt the barrier at all?
The barrier is in the soil. When you scalp you go as law as possible without hitting dirt so you shouldn’t even be disrupting it. I’ve never had any issues. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.
I scalp first always
Hey dude, congrats on the new house!
I’ll be putting down some pre-m in late March. I did a heavy app in January and one last fall to get that poa.
I’m glad it’s still dormant though, I’m not ready to mow yet though… yeah, I’m being lazy …😅
Looking forward to your new lawn content.
Thanks buddy. Sounds like you’re set.
Haha. I feel ya. Im still in a lazy mood even with so much to do.
Appreciate the support bro. Hope you’re doing swell!
@@BudgetLawns I’m doing great. I saw the snow pic you posted a while back. We got the sleet from that same system, thank goodness it wasn’t freezing rain. 👍
🥶🥶🥶 was a nasty one.
Hey man great vid. I have Bermuda as well here in southern alabama. First time home buyer last year. When would be the best time to aerate the lawn? And between what steps should it be in? Lawn slowly coming out of dormancy now
Awesome. Thank you. Congrats on the home. I never aerate the whole lawn. I’ve only ever spot aerated by hand. If I were going to, I’d do it before I level the lawn in late spring. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
@@BudgetLawns thanks for the info! To be honest I am ignorant to maintaining new grass. I don’t want to pay weed man to take care of the yard and just tryin to figure out what processes I need to do and what order. I’ll be searching more of your videos for more information!
You bet.
Did you ever stop and think about how many numbers are involved in lawncare. Steps, HP's. Volts , CFM's, NPK, Sq Ft. and of course $$.
I try not to think about it haha. Not a math kinda guy 😂😂😂 thanks so much as always man.
Are you an actual stripper ?
Last year I was a rebel. No pre Em…….
Ya that didn’t go very well down here in the south. 😏 weeds are like little trees down here 🌲 🤣
I didn’t put anything down last year either and didn’t struggle at all with weeds. I was fortunate to have neighbors that were weed free too so that helped. This lawn game can be a mystery sometimes. Thanks as always bro. Really appreciate your support.
I started too early last year. Rookie mistake. I will wait a little longer this year.
I get it buddy. We get anxious and wanna rock and roll. I've been there before. Thanks as always bro. Appreciate ya!
Perfect advice - keep it simple stupid right ? 😃😃

Missed you for a few months.LOL. Spring is coming quicker here in Arizona we are getting up in the 80"s ( a little early) but not looking like rain anytime soon. Should I scalp first then put my pre-emergent and Water it in?
Trying to get back to regular posting. Finally in the new house so lots of stuff coming. Y’all are quite warm and way ahead of where I’d be. You should prolly have a pre emergent down already. If not you could go ahead and scalp and throw it down assuming the warm weather is there to stay from here on out. I imagine it is. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya.
@@BudgetLawns Thanks and congrats on the new house. Mine is new to me two years ago. (20yrs. old) It has Bermuda and they stop caring a few years prior. Last year was survive and build back. That's when I found you with a lot of others. LOL. My Bermuda is still dormant and has Poa that I spot treated a week ago for the Poa. This week I'll scalp and put down that Per-emergent.😏 Thanks for your help.
Awesome. Glad I can help. Appreciate ya very much.
