Some programmer at Fromsoft really just went "Hmm, being on fire doesn't make sense underwater, better add a few lines of code so that doesn't happen."
It was probably added fairly early in development before level design was finalized. Designer: "Ok, we are adding a "being on fire" debuf, how do we implement it it?" Programmer: "Uh, we can take poison and... uh, remove it when the player goes in water?" Designer: "Sounds good." Later level designer doesn't put many fire users near water. LOL
I didn't intend to make this but I couldn't find any footage showing the water trick. And then I learnt how useless the burn status really was... I didn't even get into how the Flame Umbrella completely blocks fire build up (just not environmental fire)
Water is, in fact, the best liquid there is. It cures burns, puts out fires, and is the best drink for any situation. Staying hydrated is the source of my strength after all.
As useless as it is, the fire status actually *does* have a use for the player against bosses: - Most enemies (including bosses!) get into a brief "stagger" when they catch on fire, rendering them completely defenseless against your attacks. - Fire status builds up through blocks (but not parries). So this is what you do: Buff your weapon with the flame vent art, then use a consecutive combat art like Floating Passage or -Waterfowl Dance- Spiral Cloud Passage, the enemy will block the attacks (they cannot parry these combat arts), catch on fire, "stagger", then eat the rest of the combat art, plus one or two more attacks if you are quick enough. This is a semi-cheesy way to melt thru certain bosses' health bars.
do you know if every hit does the same burn build up? could i use flame vent and then sakura dance or ichhimonji double for some good burn build up as well or nah
After 170 hours of playing Sekiro I believe flame vent is the best prosthethic tool. Oil + flame vent is really good against almost everything - Lady Butterfly, Guardian Ape, Brown Ape in the Headless Ape fight, 3rd phase True Monk... And I haven't even mentioned minibosses like the chained ogre.
The status is actually great vs bosses like Isshin and Lady Butterfly, or any other battle that is a posture-break battle. If you keep applying burn and swinging/deflecting perfectly, you can hammer their posture without giving them a chance to regain any. Must faster than nerfing their posture by whittling their HP down.
The underwater headless guys actually take normal damage from non-purple weapons, from what I've seen. You can't apply the buffs underwater, so it would be a pain to resurface and re-apply when it wears off.
@@GPismymom For lore, it's said in the confetti's description, "The paper is made ceremoniously, whereby pulp is spread thin using water from the exalted Fountainhead." The water that is found where headless are underwater is all trickled down from the fountainhead or in it directly, so your sword is buffed with it in a way.
Just in time! I started playing Sekiro a couple weeks ago, and I think this information will really help me get far in overcoming all the unique challenge this game has to offer- that challenge of course being burn status effect, which (as a Souls veteran) was really a vexing issue since this is the only Fromsoft game that has this mechanic. Thanks for the help as always, Limit!
Amidst all the intrigue for useless data, I'd like to step out and acknowledge that one odd soul who was so enthralled by Tomb Mold that they chose to frame their entire account around it.
Honestly, unless fire is EXTREMELY hot, it should probably work in most of the fromsoft games that it doesn't do a lot of damage, but DOES have a burn status effect (that does less overall health damage and has some debuffs, maybe similar to frostbite where you take more damage or something). Humans are actually super fire resistant. Those burned at the stake die of smoke inhalation, for instance, and you need a huge/intense fire just to burn a human body away. That's not modern science either, for as long as cremation has been a thing, humans have known how difficult it is to kill other humans with fire (flaming arrows, for instance, were almost never used because they're just shittier arrows). Now obviously fantasy settings can have super-hot fires, but i mean things like torches should be debuff items more than damage dealers, even in early game. ...Then again, no one should be slamming their greatswords or colossal swords into the ground with each swing, so do what you can, I guess.
Damn, okay, I've been preaching about the red gourd for awhile, but just learned if your already taking enough damaged from fire to proc fire, it's already too late. I thought you were supposed to be about useless info.

Kinda weird that Fire and Lightning attacks are the opposite of each other in Sekiro - Fire attacks do a lot of damage and inflict the Burn status that deals almost none, while Lightning attacks do almost no damage but inflict the Shock status which is really devastating as it both stuns you and does a lot of damage immediately.
