I really like your videos. I have learned a lot. I'm a retired diesel mechanic and welding was part of my trade. People say you can't teach an old dog new tricks but this old dog has learned a lot thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
SirPlease accept my compliments. You are a natural instructor and communicator and I learn a lot just listening to you instruct while you weld. As a 72 yr old retired fighter pilot, who was told to get a hobby which would be humbling and challenging, I considered golf, fly fishing, chess or welding. Welding won out, and have been humiliated and challenged ever since. Again thanks for your focused instructional approach to this skill. Welding reminds me of air to air combat with the other guy keeping the advantage most of the time........................................Respectfully RJB
I’m a 13 year journeyman. I normally weld structure but I want to get more into detailed piping such as this. Thank you for your video. It was very informative! Rock on sir
Your videos are extremely informational and show more of the real work situations us welders could face. I'm a welder for a large mechanical contractor and I've been in some spots so tight I've actually taken my hood off, jammed it between two pipes and looked through it. Anyways in regards to your 2hand vs one topic. The answer is simple in my opinion. Get comfortable. If you have to weld opposite hand, get comfortable and have a clear range of movement. The last test I took for a job I used a 15in crescent, a file, a jack stand, and my own knee as a support for my lag arm( I'm right handed). What I'm getting at for anyone new to pipe welding or getting ready to test, weld however is comfortable for you. As long as you follow the wps, how you weld it is on you. Great videos bob!
Cut down an old mask. To about 2 inches from the glass holder on each side. Then put a handle on it. You can most times get it in. Tight places. Or a monkey mask... I've used both lots on ships..
I had a instructor tell me years ago that he has never seen a bad left handed welder,I started looking for that and I completely agree. Excellent video 👍👍.
Bob, I really appreciate your honesty! I also really enjoy your videos. I too am 58 years old and only started welding about 5 or 6 years ago. It ain't easy at our age. You have had the advantage of learning to do it a young age and as you said, the muscles in your body were trained and still remember for the most part. Mine just won't take a hint! lol I struggle, but love doing it and strive to be better every chance I get! Keep up the great video series!
Rattletrap2 I took welding through a local college and attained a 2yr welding associates degree, unfortunately, I was unable to garner any certifications in any position or for any process. I studied and welded in "Stick", FCAW, MIG, & TIG. I have bend test passing coupons in FCAW(2positions, flat bevel plate), and MIG(1position, flat bevel plate). I know I need more, hood down, burning rod time to become a proficient welder. I have tried three times to get into union apprenticeship programs, but I feel like my age is a large factor in why I'm being turned down for apprenticeship programs. I am a Veteran of the Global War on Terrorisim and had hoped that being a Veteran would give a union a big list of benefits to hire me like the boost from Helmets to Hardhats program as well as any veteran based incentives for hiring vets and giving us a place to learn and earn. Obviously, I have been mistaken. I forgot to mention that I am 50 years old now and I was 48 years old when I graduated from welding school. I have been trying since then to get into a union due to the fact that I don't believe a fab shop will be interested in hiring someone who is still not proficient enough to weld consistently well. I do enjoy these videos, so keep them coming!
Talk about the shimmy's. I'm 54 and I've got them. And I have to take my glasses of to get a better view of the puddle. Here's another cry out for a 7018 root, fill and cap. You and Jody Collier are the best at getting Your knowledge and experience across to the viewers. Thank You for that.
Outstanding demo! I believe you are doing a great job of demonstrating the proper technique for performing this qualification test. As a vintage welding instructor(65 yrs 0ld) myself, I share many of the thoughts you mentioned in your video. Thank you for your presentation, Sir!
Bob you do an excellent job getting your point across and explain why you do what you do. As far as the one handed two handed comments its easy to make a comment from your arm chair when you have never burnt a rod in your life, us guys and gals who do it every day know what works and what is acceptable. Some times you have to do what you have to due to get the job done this is where experience and craftsmanship come in. If you want to be negative and rude there are plenty of other channels out there and you are free to do that there.
I've watched this video 4 different times. I was laid off about a year ago and going tomorrow for my test after being off that long so this helped me to refresh my memory, talk about nervous....
@@iamtj20 appreciate the check in! I can gladly say I can now confidently weld stuff for myself but still wouldn't trust myself to do it for others hahah 👍
Sir you are a very good teacher. I don't know what kind of people dislike such videos. May be they are envious. Anyway I am from non technical, chemistry background but always fond of tools and fabrication as my father was a technical man. He taught me many things and the missing things I learned from you(and still learning)...
Hey I don't care what anyone says, that was a great video Bob, great tutorial for guys tryna break out and get their 6g. The welds look real good too man, aside from what u pointed out, but anyhow I have yet to see a perfect "machine weld" from anybody, there's always gonna be some little defect or flaw - and anyways u already know a welder is his own worst critic! I weld steam pipe all day, (carbon steel) and them welds u threw down look sweet! Keep up the excellent vids man..
thank you for taking the time to make these videos.I'm sure with your talent you could find more profitable ways to spent your free time than sharing your knowledge and reading/answering comments for the rest us for free.It really says something about your personality.Very generous man.Knowledge is power.
Another great video.Comfort is the key to putting down a good weld even though sometimes you need to weld in an uncomfortable position and hold on to something with one hand to do your welding.
hey bob im in college for applied welding and im at the end of the course and ive been practicing my 6010 roots in the 6g position with pipe ranging from 2"-6" schedule 40-120 for the pipefitters union. one thing i have figured out is once you get to 3 and 6 o'clock if you give the rod a 10-15 dagree push it helps alot with keeping the key hole consistent
Daniel push in what direction? I find I’m always fighting the keyhole once I get past 3-6 o clock unless I go with a really tight gap. Do you push it up away from the puddle or down towards the puddle?
hi. I can agree with alot your saying. I'm 40 started welding at 38 I have made a lot of progress. your videos are very helpful people trying to make we'll rocket science and you simply it so I commend you for that.
I'm glad you covered that propping issue. Propping will always make things easier on a guy and, a lot of the time, easier has a better finished product.
As a prop , a " chain vise grip" can't be beat, fast , secure and you can position it in any position. Chain extensions can be purchased , makes welding pipe of any size , in position much easier.
Bob a video on API 1104 test; both parts - 5g or 6g , 12" pipe using 5/32" rod for both the 6010 root and hot pass and 7018 fill and cap. Second part - 12" branch tee lay out, cut and weld. This is the test give to qualify for employment in North East Contractors
Great video. I liked the 2 hand vs 1 hand topic at the end. I think a lot of it stems from the "golden arm" syndrome in industry. If you need to use 2 hands so be it. As long as you produce a quality weld it really doesn't matter how you do it. I think people get hung up on thinking you are less skilled if you have to use 2 hands.
I have to say between you guys at weld.com and Jodi from welding tips and tricks you both are very helpful I've passed both open root 3g and 4g from get the info and little tips from your videos, thank you so much!

I've heard of a 6gr but have never seen anyone run one. could you show what the set up is and what kind of job would give it and thank you for all the great videos
My dad was a welder for decades. He over the years did a lot of pipe welding from small to large up to 40 inch pipe. One place he worked they gave the guys the opportunity to take the 6g pipe certification test. 20 guys took the test. My dad was the only one who passed. Why how could that be? 7010 root pass 7018 cover. That’s a rod hardly heard of. It works great
Great video and thanks for sharing. I'm a pipe welder from Louisiana working in the nuclear industry. I totally agree with you on being as comfortable as possible to take the test if the Inspector allows it. What ever it takes to make a good, sound weld.
I remember the first 6g test I took a long time ago. At a power plant. I just needed a job . I passed it that God , I was hungry and tired of getting no work in the oil field
Excellent, per usual. Who cares if you use something to brace yourself. All that matters is achieving an acceptable weld. I'd like to see some different weaved caps or maybe 6G FCAW.
I always do mine facing me and I always stick a old file in the pipe and rested my arm on and Jack stands either one facing either way don't matter to me any long as I get comfortable long as I do that my welds look good and run good and I pretty much do exactly how this guy did on any weld test is how I was taught on jobs to do it over fifteen or so years ago took me about 5 years to work up to fitter and a year and a half to really be a decent welder I still learn new things everyday all senarios are different more are the same Tig Welding was always my strongest process but I mostly worked in the chemical plants so Stainless was mostly what I weld it's a fun trade I enjoyed it still do but I got tired of chasing the work around the country so I started driving a semi truck about 10 years ago and I like it even more plus no more looking for a room or place to stay every trip outta town I live in my truck is comfy and alot better on your eyes and back to lol but I encourage anyone interested in this field to do it just like trucking I encourage that to both are great ways to earn a living
Interesting to see how slow you go. I've been moving to fast apparently. When my key hole gets big , I panic a bit. I've only been welding pipe for about a month.
great video, but I have a little question, when do you speak from a hotpass, is it only when you use the same electrode as the root? Keep going greetings from belgium
It is for me. I like to run a "hot pass" with Exx10 electrodes, after the root., 10 - 20 amps higher depending on the situation and position / direction of travel.
Hello from Indiana. I’m a union BOIKERMAKER local 374 and we do tubes I’m doing a tube test soon and I noticed you’re using 3/32 at 80 Amps I’ve been told to run at 92 amps for a tube is there a difference I mean it’s basically a large tube right . Should I be turning my machine down or is it just that machine you’re running and for 1/8 inch 7018 we run at 120 amps
Hay Bob. Gary the CT. Electrician. Hay thank's for the bit on welding square tubing. That was real helpful. I'm gettin ready to build a welding cart for, you guessed it, by car! No, only kidin. What size tubing and what gage would you suggest for the material? I still have to come up with a design, but I'll figure something out. I'm not real happy I'm goin to miss your boot came this year. I need to start saving now, since I am on SS now. Yaaaa! I hope you make out ok on it. Thanks again Bob for all the great video's you put out, I really enjoy them and they help more then you may think. Oh, they call us guys "sparky" but it should belong to you welder's! :-)
For welding carts I use a lot of 1" - 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" 14ga tubing. 1/8" angle. there are a lot of little design issues to go through. I just built another one not too long ago. Not the prettiest design but functional.
Have you ever welded pipe with 7018 all the way, also the root? I know you dont do it much in the US, but im curious haha. Thanks for the video, as always.
Thanks for the tips for 6G Sir ! Can you do some 1g Though 4g 6010 root 7018 fill and cap ! I need help on how to Tac the plate so it dose not mess up my root weld , also my re starts are a disaster is it better to feather out the key hole ? Thank you !
The DC 1000 most people will say yes, however someone who's been pipe welding long enough can pickup a bead without grinding. Personally I don't unless I felt a little cold coming off a rod. To each his own
I keep seeing this particular welding machine on a lot of these videos. I have a lincoln 250 ranger, got a matco mig/tig welder, learned off my dads old Panasonic gun slinger, and now in the shop we have two top of line Miller mig welders. I know some machines work better then others. What machine is he using?
why on the root sometimes you whip it and run just straight? can you whip the whole way and or run it just straight. and why do you run it cold specifically 7018 1/8? and what can you do if you blow a hole while running 3\32 7018 on a test? can just go back over with 6010?
Can you please do a 2” SCH 160 6010 root 7018 fill/cap. I’m having trouble with the fill passes on the bottom, and tie ins on the bottom. Trying to pass my ua-21 test.
Hi Bob, you've mentioned it before but here, in the UK; 6010 is really rare, I knew one chap that done a job with 6010/ 7010 vertical down but it's normally 7018 all the way here, vertical up obviously. Just different processes in different places I guess, anyway keep up the videos, they're brilliant. Cheers Andy.
Hi Bob, plumbing apprentice here. Just had a quick question for you. What were you running at on your cap. My root and fill pass are almost perfect just when I go to cap I think mess up bead placement and start to undercut each side. Is the edge of your rod on the edge of your bevel and letting it flow on top or is your rod even with the edge of the bevel if that makes sense.
Okay after watching a second time Iv concluded your root pass and 3,32 low hy amp settings seem normal. However your 1,8 and 5,32 amp settings seems VERY low. Are you compensating with the dig function? And if so please explain up or down. Lincoln has arc controle, Miller has a stiff soft controle and your machine has a dig function? I asume all these are the same. Could you please do a video explaining these settings and the appropriate times to use them? Thank you for your time.
Bob these are amazing videos however from my experience in the field we don't see any of the machines you're using and the amperages seem really low I would be so happy if you can make a video like this and as well as your 5,32 heavy wall cap using a more field common machine like a Lincoln Vantage or Miller Trailblazer the amperage is you using just seem so low and it may be because of the Dig function that I'm not too familiar with which the common field machines haveas well. I would like to start experimenting with my dig settings on my Lincoln Vantage but you could save me a lot of time and money by making an educational video like this with a more field common machine and talk a lot about your different amperage settings. What if you went uphill one side and down the other?!
I’m trying to weave a 7018 cap on 6g and continue to get undercut on the top pipe at around 4 to 8 o’clock keep trying different things but it still happens I’m not a pro by any means just a pipe-fitter practicing is it useless to weave on 6g 6” should I just be running two or three stringers for a cap im good with root and fill but the dang cap is so frustrating
Could you please do 2inch heavy wall tube test 7018 root and 7018 3/32 fill and cover I have allways problems overlaying the passes and allways flush on top even on cover pass plus bend test let me know please
I totally agree. I'm rather curious to see it being done and also an explanation as to why downhill is thought to be inferior in some cases yet in pipeline welding it's the way to go--given how expensive and big those projects are they don't mess around.
And talking about the guys I learned from they was so old school they always talked about the days before 7018 rods came along and they uphilled there 6010 root and down hilled there 6010 filler and cap which I'm certain burnt there ass up over time cuz them gray 6010s he used are the common type now but they used the red 6010s alot then and either throws the hell outta some fire those other experienced pipe hands out there knows what I mean to ain't no avoiding it that I'm aware of so once that roots in there your fire mostly blows inside the pipe if your doing it right and 7018 is alot less aggressive of a rod far as ark and spark off them they burn far smoother as well but that's DC + for you tigs mostly dc- and Welding Aluminum with Tig is usually done on AC+ which the sound is way different of your ark the flow of the puddle is different as well and rather than using 100%argon your using 75-25% argon Co2 or pure helium as your sheilding gas and your using green tip 100% tungsten rather than red tip which all this you learn over time and years nobody masters this in weeks or days
We shoot some through a #9 alloweld. This one was not, due to the difficult angles and blocked light. Shade will also vary depending on your camera specs.
I have to ask because I've seen you do a lot of pipe/plate weld tests, is there any reason why you couldn't do a tig or 6010 root on a pipe weld in the field then cap it with a dual shield flux core "hot" pass? I'm not a pro welder by any means but I feel like that would the fastest way to do it and still have a very good weld. love your videos. thanks for all the great info
The reason is likely because stick is much simpler to set up and requires less equipment. This is useful in the field especially and it really doesn’t take very long to fill up with stick
Great vid overall! I'm learning pipe right now , I see you're running the root at bout 80 now if I tried that the key hole would just open up way to much for me and make it difficult to close it up and just get titties on the inside of my pipe. By the time Im at 12:00 on the pipe I'm at like 65amps. I'm running an 1/8 land with a 1/8 gap I like to run my stuff hot but for some reason I'm Not able to on pipe. Any pointers!? Am I running to slow maybe? Anyway thanks for reading my comment and you have yourself a great productive day 🤘🏾
Would that root pass for a x-ray? I’m getting ready to take my 6g 6” test. My root looks similar at times. Just wondering if that’s plenty penetration.
hi bob which esab welder do you recommend for sch 40 carbon steel pipe welding? i am unsure whether to get the renegade or one of the rebels. i have a kemppi mls 2300 at the moment but im really struggling to run 6010 / 6011 electrodes on it. it runs 7018 perfectly but i need a machine that works well on both rods. many thanks dave

You're a very knowledgeable man, i really enjoyed this video. Gave plenty of insight, I'm definitely going to subscribe.
Thanks for the support, Zach.
Your the best mentor man. Thanks for the great vids
that weave 6010 pass looks good!
He's the Bob Ross of welding
Well done 👍, the only thing I wish you would have shown was the fit up and how you tacked it.
Bob you are the man. I like the way you get money. Thank you for the help. All the info helps a lot.
How many times have I made love to this test (in stick, TIG, and MIG no less), and yet I can't help but watch this video?... I must love welding.
Maybe set it up like a pipe a boiler maker would face? tube test? mig hard wire all the way out? love the videos. thanks
Bob, you are a welding god. I appreciate your candor and your expertise. Thank you!
always like your videos they are very informative and instructional.
Thank you.
Interesting to see how slow you go. I've been moving to fast apparently. When my key hole gets big , I panic a bit. I've only been welding pipe for about a month.
The tests I did where smaller diameter pipes that was standard in the early 70 to late 80s.
great video, but I have a little question, when do you speak from a hotpass, is it only when you use the same electrode as the root? Keep going greetings from belgium
It is for me. I like to run a "hot pass" with Exx10 electrodes, after the root., 10 - 20 amps higher depending on the situation and position / direction of travel.
Can you do a Overhead video without backing strip, thanks.
Kala Mies 7018 all the way is great
1/8 gap 1/8 land 120A straight polarity for 7018 root was the exotic spec we tried at school on a friday afternoon. was not all that bad
Cole Bendis I have a 7018 open root. 6g video on my channel with arc shoots and perfect penetration .
Check out the video from NSW. It is a dandy and they make it look easier than it is. Good stuff.
Cole Bendis straight? Interesting
7:43 “Where’s your faceshield at, hand?!”
excellent teaching Bob thank you.
Always learn something by watching you. There always will be several ways to skin the cat.
Thanks for the tips for 6G Sir ! Can you do some 1g Though 4g 6010 root 7018 fill and cap ! I need help on how to Tac the plate so it dose not mess up my root weld , also my re starts are a disaster is it better to feather out the key hole ? Thank you !
Without backing plate I assume?
This is meant as a question. Aren't you supposed to feather out or grind it thin on the 6010 when u stopped to get a new rod?
The DC 1000 most people will say yes, however someone who's been pipe welding long enough can pickup a bead without grinding. Personally I don't unless I felt a little cold coming off a rod. To each his own
one thing you can do is at the end of the rod push all the way though. that way you have a nice sized key hole to get right back into
I keep seeing this particular welding machine on a lot of these videos.
Huh must be too weak to weld with 6010. Many people hate the sparks it throws
I have my 12 on 12 branch papers I know it's a long process but maybe you should try and put it in here
Hi Bob, plumbing apprentice here.
Bob, I am new to welding so I'm not that familiar with all of the terms you use so, what is " a hot pass "
Hi, Bob. Did you wait for the metal to cool after every pass or adjust your amperage accordingly?
Quang Hoang Both actually.
Great video as always!!!
Could you please do 2inch heavy wall tube test 7018 root and 7018 3/32 fill and cover I have allways problems overlaying the passes and allways flush on top even on cover pass plus bend test let me know please
How would you manipulate your rod if you did run a 6010 hot pass? Would you still do a small weave like you did with the 7018 on the second pass?
I generally stitch my hot pass uphill with 6010
He's as good as me lol I really like watching his videos very helpful as far as learning new things goes
sir can i ask, u do this weld are swaping cable + to - or not sir?, thankyou, sorry 4 my bad english 😅
what about some down hill welding as in pipeline?
Adam Tierney agreed I'd like to see 60-7010 and some 5/32-1/4"
You guys want to see the fire breathing dragon welds, eh?
I totally agree. I'm rather curious to see it being done and also an explanation as to why downhill is thought to be inferior in some cases yet in pipeline welding it's the way to go--given how expensive and big those projects are they don't mess around.
Ratchet Innovations A.P.E welding's new wave!
And talking about the guys I learned from they was so old school they always talked about the days before 7018 rods came along and they uphilled there 6010 root and down hilled there 6010 filler and cap which I'm certain burnt there ass up over time cuz them gray 6010s he used are the common type now but they used the red 6010s alot then and either throws the hell outta some fire those other experienced pipe hands out there knows what I mean to ain't no avoiding it that I'm aware of so once that roots in there your fire mostly blows inside the pipe if your doing it right and 7018 is alot less aggressive of a rod far as ark and spark off them they burn far smoother as well but that's DC + for you tigs mostly dc- and Welding Aluminum with Tig is usually done on AC+ which the sound is way different of your ark the flow of the puddle is different as well and rather than using 100%argon your using 75-25% argon Co2 or pure helium as your sheilding gas and your using green tip 100% tungsten rather than red tip which all this you learn over time and years nobody masters this in weeks or days
great video, are you using the Phillip safety alloweld lens and if so what shade is it?
We shoot some through a #9 alloweld. This one was not, due to the difficult angles and blocked light. Shade will also vary depending on your camera specs.
would you mind telling me which video was? I'm looking into buying one.
ruclips.net/video/0ghGRDraLEA/видео.html This isn't ours, but it was done by Phillips Safety, so it will give you an idea.
Juan Lopez if you stick weld often get a glass gold lens from Phillips with the blue filter. I find the purple filter works better for other processes
ecr125x thanks
the uphill cellulose root is asme code? vs the downhill being api1104?
I have to ask because I've seen you do a lot of pipe/plate weld tests, is there any reason why you couldn't do a tig or 6010 root on a pipe weld in the field then cap it with a dual shield flux core "hot" pass? I'm not a pro welder by any means but I feel like that would the fastest way to do it and still have a very good weld. love your videos. thanks for all the great info
The reason is likely because stick is much simpler to set up and requires less equipment. This is useful in the field especially and it really doesn’t take very long to fill up with stick
@Weld. com could you do an video on welding angle iron how to weld them together please?
Awesome video!
a good welder is a comfortable welder
for the life of me i cant weld this i need to practice more 💪🏼
Great vid overall! I'm learning pipe right now , I see you're running the root at bout 80 now if I tried that the key hole would just open up way to much for me and make it difficult to close it up and just get titties on the inside of my pipe. By the time Im at 12:00 on the pipe I'm at like 65amps. I'm running an 1/8 land with a 1/8 gap I like to run my stuff hot but for some reason I'm
Not able to on pipe. Any pointers!? Am I running to slow maybe? Anyway thanks for reading my comment and you have yourself a great productive day 🤘🏾
From your description it sounds like arc length is probably too long. I'm no Bob though!
Would that root pass for a x-ray? I’m getting ready to take my 6g 6” test. My root looks similar at times. Just wondering if that’s plenty penetration.
I would like to see you do a 6GR using a flux core 068 233.
How long will it take an expert to make this weld from prep to finish?
hi bob
which esab welder do you recommend for sch 40 carbon steel pipe welding?
i am unsure whether to get the renegade or one of the rebels.
i have a kemppi mls 2300 at the moment but im really struggling to run 6010 / 6011 electrodes on it.
it runs 7018 perfectly but i need a machine that works well on both rods.
many thanks dave
Both handle 6010 / 6011 without a problem. Renegade only goes to 200 amps unless you have 3 phase power.
how do you get your camera to fit in your helm? what kind of cam is it?
