It's great to see bits of Michael's Barnun on here, just before he signed for Phantom when his contract ended for Barnum. ALW was waiting for his contract to expire so he could get him. The snafu with the flame at 4:20 was a tad painful, but he's such a trouper, he just laughs it off.
I saw this show so many time at the Palladium and was lucky enough to be there for closing night. It was one of the most amazing nights of my life. They did the whole of the ending as an encore. I kept my deflated balloon for about 20 years. I wish I still had it.
Thank you for putting so much of Crawford's Barnum here, and making it hard to find, for obvious reasons. The only problem is a lot of people who want to see it, can't find it too! I have to keep referring people to the right spot!
I LOVE LOVE this show - I bought the DVD and I'm so glad. Michael is phenomenal as Barnum. How many actors can make you laugh and cry all in the span of a couple of hours? Michael said in his autobiography that the London production was different from the original in NY in that the relationship between Charity and Barnum here is a lot stronger - I'm glad of it, too.
how can you not laugh when he can get a flame.if any1 can carry a scene through.its Micheal Crawford....thankyou for putting this up. 1 of my favorite childhood memorys
Barnum: The colors of my life Are bountiful and bold, The purple glow of indigo, The gleam of green and gold. The splendor of the sunrise, The dazzle of a flame, The glory of a rainbow, I'd put 'em all to shame. No quiet browns and grays, I'll take my days instead And fill them till they overflow With rose and cherry red! And should this sunlit world Grow dark one day, The colors of my life Will leave a shining light To show the way...
The girl singing with him is perfect - who is she? I laughed my head off when the flame trick went wrong, he turned into Frank Spencer again! - but of course he turned it into a success as only he could
There is another moment like that in the musical. I apologise, though. I can't recall the name of the song. It's Charie and PT again... And I remember a swing being on set... Maybe someone will recognise it.
I may be biased because this was the first rendition of Barnum I saw, but Crawford is my favourite characterisation of the character. Of the Barnums I've seen, he best encapsulates that childlike wonder, I really believe in him despite the humbug xD And no shade to Jim Dale or anyone else but imo he has the best voice that balances charm and heart and playfulness. Such a great show done by great people. I don't know her name but she's my favourite Charity Barnum too ^_^
I'm so glad they kept in him not getting the flame and rolling with it rather than re-shooting a tech run or something! As Bette Middler once said when she tripped through the doorway in Hello Dolly "It's live!"
I'M ONLY FOND OF BARNUM'S LINES IN THIS SONG BECAUSE I LOVE THOSE COLOURS TOO, THEY ARE THE COLOURS OF MY LIFE TOO!!!!!! LIKE HIM I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT THEM!!!!!!!
I love him so much. He's so cute in this. When he messes up I can't help but smile. I love him. He is the Phantom and PT Barnum!

Oh my goodness. That face! He's so sweet, charming and adorable--I just want to hug him. Such a great actor!

Awe Michael, I love you so much. I have this on DVD, and I still laugh so hard at the Flame! Can't believe he did this before he did Phantom

Thank you sooo much for this. I've been trying to find it for ages. I love this musical and this is my favourite song.
Oh, Michael
0:31 - I love the way he looks at Charity. It’s the look of pure love despite being bitched at 😂

MrMonroman well a failed trick actually works with the character of Barnum

@@TheCatsReflection-me I like your style!
Thank you for a very happy memory all the way back in 1981 💜💜💜
Still as good as the day they filmed it :-)
We did Barnum for our year 6 production the other day
