It's not a clan thing, it's basically a homophone. The Sen in Senju IRC is written with the character for a thousand, they're called Senju because they supposedly had 1000 different techniques. Sen=thousand Ju=Jutsu. Meanwhile the Sen in Senjutsu is written with the character for Sage. Personally I always thought that the reason he could use Senjutsu is the for the same reason wood release in considered so strong, the trees he makes can absorb natural energy and feed it into him, which means he doesnt have to sit around to collect the energy and pretty much has an inexhaustible source of chakra.

I mean a literal tree, when Naruto trained to becoming a toad sage there was a risk that he may either permanently be left with Toad features or practically become a literal toad if he did not find a balance during his training. We are not fully aware of the specific training that Hashirama did, but it most likely had a similar style as compared to becoming a Toad Sage. Therefore there is a fair possibility that in Hashirama's sage training that he could have possibly turned into a tree if he was unable to focus while meditating. However since we did not see him training his sage mode, we are not aware if there was an actual risk of him to turn into an actual tree. But I would rather go under the assumption there was a risk of it happening because this sage mode is basically the strongest sage mode, specifically because this sage can almost never be low on charkra.
