The feeling of losing confidence in the journalism of this video when you see an article on-screen multiple times about a movie titled "Vice" that has absolutely nothing to do with Vice Media is to help you feel what it's like to be hornswoggled and disappointed by Vice Media. Very clever.
All Disney did was speed up the inevitable. Vice clearly had terminal issues stemming from their leadership far before Disney came along. The was nothing satisfying about this downfall for me. I remember being obsessed with their RUclips documentaries in the late 00s. We needed something like that
Yeah idk why people are lambasting on Disney that much. Sure Disney ruined many things, but surely people actually paid attention on this very video how its founder wasn't actually serious about running the company? Disney or not, vice was going to fail sooner or later.
However scammy the owners were vices’ content in the early days was actually pretty good and nonpartisan. It was real journalism. Once Disney invested it turned the content to utter bile and exposed all the leaks in the boat. Had it not been for Disney destroying their content, the company had a chance to correct its issues.
The problem here is censorship. Disney will happily censor anything. Before the merger vice didn’t believe in censorship which is ultimately what the true libertarian vice fans actually wanted. They would’ve posted defamatory stuff against its own company if they knew it would go viral.
Now I know why I had so many free Vice magazines in the early 2000’s. They dropped them off at our record store for free. I remember my buddy telling me when Disney invested and we knew it was gonna be no good anymore
I bet your record store was located either on Sunset or Melrose, that's where I would always find the magazines lol I still have 3 magazines, oldest one is from 2003. Great times those were.
This is nitpicky, but at 4:17 it says "Setting themselves up in Brooklyn, NY, home of the hipster culture that Vice was catering towards" but shows a street scene in New Orleans.
@@HansenFTPsytrance neo-hippies don’t look like that over here.. People in the video have some sort of extra stupid Murican vibe over them. I had no idea Vice started as Voice of Montreal, that annoying newspaper that was given for free in the subway and that basically littered the trains cause people were too lazy to throw it away. That is crazy.
1. Vice throwing parties is 100% true. I went to one, where I met the Strokes, ate MDMA, and lost a weekend to zannie bars & alcohol and apparently went around stabbing people's tires in Brooklyn... 2. They used to hand out free Vice magazine in tattoo shops and record stores in Philadelphia & NY. Which I thought was a terrible business model.
“I took a pill in Brooklyn, to show Shane Smith I was cool, when I finally got sober I had five misdemeanors but fukkit it was something to do.” Hmmm… I have to wonder if it’s just another face of the vast compromise-and-control operation that would also explain why debauched Hollywood stars end up as neo-puritan wokescolds who dutifully parrot any political message the establishment demands of them.
Vice mostly covered stories about porn stars and drug addicts. That's what kept them a float for so long. (Until RUclips started censoring their site).Unfortunately, it was also their downfall. This guy left out a few things.
@Acueil i assume some ppl on the right use it like ppl on the far left use "n@zi" as teeth grinder suggests but "woke" has a meaning too: a post modern nihilistic ideology influenced by Marxist philosophy (everything revolves around oppression - originally class but now race, gender, sexuality, etc) that pushes identity politics, white guilt (the "oppression Olympics", who's the most oppressed group of ppl), misandry (together = the trope "white man bad"), and an obsession with race and social justice, and being offended on behalf of other "marginalized groups". see also: SJWs, outrage culture, cancel culture I hope this helps
Agreed. The wording of the title pisses me off. What is satisfying about the collapse of a media company that once did incredible journalism? What is satisfying about finding out the owners are sleazy liars who don't pay their employees? Just seems like a real phucked up thing to say.
I went for an interview at vice in the mid 2000's for an advertising sales role, the guy turned up off his face saying that they been out celebrating getting their latest issue finalised and he hadn't slept. His was a pure Nathan Barley type. I didn't get the job, probably because I turned up in a collared shirt and 'smart shoes' looks like I dodged a bullet, as I probably would never have been paid!

Bari Weiss did a podcast with Nellie Bowles on this, who laid the blame mainly on DEI initiatives within the office and the PC deathgrip on content. Vice apparently paid a DEI officer 1 million dollars per year to reshape the company.
It was very interesting and very insightful up until 2015. It's cool to hate on vice now, and with all right to do so, but don't act like it wasn't amazing journalism in contrast to everything else in the early 10s. the North Korea documentary is wild, and African and Afghan documentaries have insane segments
also, i loved vice documenting the come up of alternative artists via noisey etc. i think for people being born 90s, it's a nostalgic era with a very distinctive style that will get love again by another generation when the dust clears
What i hated the most about vice is that they tend to present a very one-sided and shallow view of the places or topic they explore. there was one time when they were in liberia and all they did was going to a jail, bribe the guards and letting out a dangerous african warlord and all they did was interview him and ask him for his side of the story of liberia. Literally like if what they just did was just a game and african countries were their personal playground
Vices' golden age was their documentaries with HBO. It was one of the best documentaries I had ever seen. If they start producing quality content that on topics nobody picks up on, they will be back in business
Just like they did to banks. Jamie Diamond burg stein got profited billions from the government when he took over First Republic Bank. It's a recurring theme. Ukraine is the same. Profit coming and going. Old Testament values people.
Yea all these culture warriors in the comments talking about Disney ruining them when the video from the first minute is like "yeah they were always shitty from the first minute they existed"
This is standard operating procedure for corporations for a long time. Wage theft is the biggest crime in the US. It's a twisted version of Robin Hood. Instead of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, the new mantra of the corpo sociopaths is Steal from the Poor and give to the Rich.
Quick question: Why do companies that own majority stock in another company have to dictate how the company they own the stock in behave AFTER they’ve bought the stock? Why not lay out everything on the table before purchasing the stock, and if the company its stock is being purchased is cool with it, the deal goes through, else, the purchasing company gets out of the deal. And also, after stock purchases have been made, can’t the company owning the purchased stock refund the purchasing company when they start to make absurd rules? I feel like this whole thing could have be avoided if Vice said “Alright Disney, here’s your investment. Fuck off!” It just seems that Disney single-handedly killed Vice.
Especially when the documentaries feature the founder/ceo actually jumping in, being directly involved with everything that we see, which is what made their stuffs feel so authentic
4:06 Vice magazine was very widely distributed across the country, and always free. How many factual inaccuracy you include in this video? You didn’t even spell Gavin’s name correctly.
Vice media interviewed me twice. Two separate film crews from different branches of Vice. I'm pretty sure that neither interviews ever got published or put online. They were so amateur.
Simple: Bad business plans and structure, poor management decisions and policies, abusive work environment, embracing DEI and pushing toxic identity politics, and lack of journalism. Tim Pool, who used to work for them and helped create their on-the-ground reporring program, perfectly describes it all.
@@jeffersonhassan4558 is it wrong? The moment any business or organization decided to abandon meritocracy and professionalism for identity politics and virtue-signaling, they are doomed to fail. I ma black and will be damned before I ever defend DEI.
In the early 2010’s Vice was a staple in my coming-of-age period. It kinda felt like they opened up a window to the big world out there but then it became very gimmicky. I remember their content went from showing the fringes of society, which do not get much exposure to a lame comedic approach to journalism and a very internet culture approach. I remember documentaries like The UK’s Scariest Debt Collector, Swansea Love Story, This is What Winning Looks Like amongst others to content like Break Old UK Laws in London, and How To Create The Highest Ranked Restaurant in London. Their content became soulless. Another thing I do not like about Vice is the amount of 1 on 1 storytime content rather than actual documentaries. Sure there is a place for interviewing individuals and letting them tell their story but it seems like there is an influx of it.
Sad people only remember the insane drug fueled gonzo journalism. In hindsight, Simon truly gave us incredible insights to what would become the war in Ukraine as it unfolded.
I religiously followed his brave reporting. Entering buildings at the same time as the rebels, being the second in through the broken window. It was intense.

I always felt that Vice was a bit of a joke, and then I saw the Documentary Now! episode "DRONEZ: The Hunt for El Chingon" in 2015 and realized I wasn't the only one. The balancing act they were attempting with serious news pieces sandwiched between episodes of Thrasher's King of the Road series always seemed weird and, even more so, forced. It was easy to sniff out the grift, but it's still surprising how much of a grift it actually was.
Don Lemon, Brian Stelter, Chris Cuomo, &c. only have value as establishment mouthpieces. Once they’re cut loose, they don’t bring any of their audience with them because they’re effectively fungible. Now compare them to Tucker Carlson…
So Vice was on thin ice as it was but maybe could've managed to make it across but then Disney jumped on their back and sent them plunging into the dark.

Disney's worst investment ever made was into Kathleen Kennedy.
True, but why did you use I instead of 1? In common text that looks confusing, were not using roman numerals brother
Kennedy was actually promoted to her position by George Lucas, and in fairness, nobody could have guessed the havoc she would eventually wreak.
Now put a chick in it and make her gay
Let's not forget that Walt Disney himself was racist, anti-semitic, and personally welcomed Nazi director Leni Riefenstahl to his studios!
Watch out! She'll get you!
@@nicka824 The thing is though, Vice still make some excellent pieces if you care to look. It’s just lost in the noise of Disney-safe rubbish
They had a falling out and Gavin Macinnis left. The ad guy kept it for himself and lost the creative.
I bet your record store was located either on Sunset or Melrose, that's where I would always find the magazines lol I still have 3 magazines, oldest one is from 2003. Great times those were.
@@titamcfrizzy Amoeba on sunset!
This is nitpicky, but at 4:17 it says "Setting themselves up in Brooklyn, NY, home of the hipster culture that Vice was catering towards" but shows a street scene in New Orleans.
People in the scene looked far far from hipsters also. More like psy-trance neo-hippies I think.
@@HansenFTPsytrance neo-hippies don’t look like that over here.. People in the video have some sort of extra stupid Murican vibe over them. Like only juggalos or candy ravers could but with some sort of carnivalesque wannabe bohemian twist or how does one even call this stuff..
Something scabies for sure..
I had no idea Vice started as Voice of Montreal, that annoying newspaper that was given for free in the subway and that basically littered the trains cause people were too lazy to throw it away. That is crazy.
I take issue with the phrase “drug culture”. Drug addicts are often suffering from a sever lack of culture.

“I took a pill in Brooklyn, to show Shane Smith I was cool, when I finally got sober I had five misdemeanors but fukkit it was something to do.”
Hmmm… I have to wonder if it’s just another face of the vast compromise-and-control operation that would also explain why debauched Hollywood stars end up as neo-puritan wokescolds who dutifully parrot any political message the establishment demands of them.
Yeah I remember getting it free from sneaker stores in like 2005.
What a top weekend. Those halcyon days.

@@mouthbrooder5728 Yeah I thought so. I was amazed that such a big thick premium magazine was free...
Vice mostly covered stories about porn stars and drug addicts. That's what kept them a float for so long. (Until RUclips started censoring their site).Unfortunately, it was also their downfall. This guy left out a few things.
Yeah this is pretty shoddy work. Lazy clickbait video

@Acueil i assume some ppl on the right use it like ppl on the far left use "n@zi" as teeth grinder suggests but "woke" has a meaning too:
a post modern nihilistic ideology influenced by Marxist philosophy (everything revolves around oppression - originally class but now race, gender, sexuality, etc) that pushes identity politics, white guilt (the "oppression Olympics", who's the most oppressed group of ppl), misandry (together = the trope "white man bad"), and an obsession with race and social justice, and being offended on behalf of other "marginalized groups".

Nathan Barley. Perfect analogy.
The focus was wrong once it got too big. Instead of creating good content, the focus was on attracting investors.

Their Fukushima & Liberian Warlords docs were the last hard hitting ones, they just kinda faded away after those.
They were insufferable. At that point in time being HQ’d in Brooklyn tells you everything.
Yeah, but their journalistic integrity is already compromised

Firing Tim Pool might not have been the worst move.
Quick question:
Why do companies that own majority stock in another company have to dictate how the company they own the stock in behave AFTER they’ve bought the stock?
Why not lay out everything on the table before purchasing the stock, and if the company its stock is being purchased is cool with it, the deal goes through, else, the purchasing company gets out of the deal.
And also, after stock purchases have been made, can’t the company owning the purchased stock refund the purchasing company when they start to make absurd rules?
I feel like this whole thing could have be avoided if Vice said “Alright Disney, here’s your investment. Fuck off!”
It just seems that Disney single-handedly killed Vice.
