@@gzbigbos9976 He's the only king as of the late third age.
But Thranduil is *very much* the kind of king the Noldor had for most of the First Age... somewhat egocentric, arrogant to a degree... but Thranduil really is *nothing* when compared to the likes of Feanor... he's the guy who tried to leave Valinor for revenge in defiance of the Gods and when the elven shipbuilders would not give him the ships he and his Noldorim Elves (Galadriel among them) slaughtered the shipbuilders out of hand and then had to go though the northern ice to get to Beleriand... "Middle Earth" is but the westernmost region of this continent... the hows and whys would be beyond this post. 😉
But let it suffice to say the Elves had far worse kings, Thranduil is fairly harmless....😅

Tauriel is a created character, non-canonical, added to be a part of the equally non-canonical “love triangle”. Legolas was never in The Hobbit, either, though it is fun to see his character, and I do like Tauriel. She is kind of a blend of Arwen and Eowyn. Evangeline Lilly, who portrays her, was also in “Lost” with Dominic “Merry” Monaghan. They dated seriously and had a pretty high profile romance there for awhile, but, according to Dom, he blew it completely by choosing the party life, the Hollywood scene, more than her. They made an adorable couple. Too bad it didn’t last.

There are a couple of reasons why there is so much more cgi in The Hobbit. One is that by the time the project emerged from development hell, Jackson and Co. had only months to prepare (as opposed to years for LOTR), so a lot of things had to be designed on the fly. Another is that there are a lot more fantastical elements that couldn't be done practically due to budget or safety concerns. The resulting "animated" look is a big turn off for many fans of the more realistic look of LOTR. Personally, I think it suits the more fanciful story being told in these films, especially when you consider that it's told from the perspective of an old Hobbit who remembers his adventures fondly and just might be guilty of exaggerating some of them.

In other words, Hollywood's insatiable lust for money (their "Ring") as soon as possible trumped Jackson's commitment to artistic integrity, and the time needed to realise it.

So Smaug is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch but Benedict also voiced Sauron in this trilogy. And an interesting thing about how he did Sauron is that he learned how to pronounce his Black Speech lines backwards so they recorded him speaking and then when they put it into the movie they reversed it back to the proper way, he thought it would add another layer of eeriness to it.

The Wind Lance is one of the things made up by Peter Jackson because of how big they made Smaug they had to upsize the Black Arrow to make it believable that it would kill him. Black Arrow was actually a normal sized magical arrow that Bard had for years and always recovered. He also didn't know of the spot on Smaug.
When Smaug attacked Erebor there was only two dwarves who survived, Thror and Thrain, Thorin and Balin weren't there. Smaug also didn't remain in the mountain, he came out occasionally to carry away people to eat and continue destroying Dale.
Bilbo also went down twice, the first time Smaug didn't wake up and Bilbo took a cup up to Thorin & Company to prove the treasure was still there. He then went back down wearing the ring thinking Smaug was still asleep but Smaug had woken up from feeling the draft from the open side door. Bilbo and Smaug talked at great length like how Bilbo did in the movie, but Bilbo tricked Smaug into showing him his belly which was covered in jewels from 200 years of laying on the treasure, except "a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell" The spot wasn't caused by being shot so Bard didn't know. How Bard knew I will comment with the next movie, his powerful line that was cut from the movie because the change to the Black Arrow made his lines irrelevant.
The Dwarves also didn't fight Smaug, they were still in the passage above him in the mountain when Smaug went to attack Laketown.

I read a lot of books, but I have read LOTR I think 8 times in my life, and I will read it again soon with my son.
The reason we say "THE Shire" instead of just "Shire" is b/c it's not a proper name: A shire is a type of administrative division, like county or province. Hence England has places like Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, etc. In Anglo-Saxon England (before AD 1066), a shire was called "scír" in Old English, and the chief officer of a shire was a "scírgerefa" or "shire reeve", which is where the modern word "sheriff" comes from.

A lot of the details about Beorn and his people are made up for the movie. Tolkien wrote very little about Beorn's background or about other skin-changers. You can't tell from the film but it took the Company several weeks to pass through Mirkwood. And they were imprisoned by the Elvenking for more weeks, not arriving at Lake-town until 22 September (Bilbo's birthday). The film timeline might be a bit different!

You are right about the over use of CGI. Sir Ian McKellen, who plays Gandalf, cried during the making of these movies because of all the CGI. In the LotR, he was interacting with real people on real practical sets. But, in this, he was on a green screen interacting with a tennis ball a lot, and it just made the acting part extremely difficult for him.
The production of these movies was a complete sh*tshow. You should go watch some documentaries about it after watching the final movie. Massive time constraints, lots of studio interference, rewrites, etc. Peter Jackson wasn't even the original director, and he came on to the production late. While not as great as the LotR, it could have easily turned out much worse.

A lot of complications with this trilogy. Peter Jackson wasn’t even the original director but had to step in at the last minute. I definitely prefer the story of the book more than what we saw in these, but these have their moments. Starting with negatives - bloating the story with stuff that wasn’t in the books… story beats and characters included. I understand you liked Tauriel and Kili’s relationship but knowing that was just made because the company wanted more romance (and it was an obvious parallel to Aragorn/Arwen), it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As well as the overdone CGI. Of course we can blame it on the production issues for this if we wanted to - it’s a lot quicker, easier, and cheaper now to just use cgi over practical effects, and when they had a really limited time to film, they went the cgi route. Comparing that to LOTR where they literally had years of preparation, it makes sense that there was trouble. The last thing is some of the fighting is just silly. Sure, I’m fine with the fights being more tame and adventurous than LOTR with it being based on a children’s book, but the overtly silly and unrealistic stuff turned me off as well. Also, the Wilhelm screams are ridiculous and not funny in these. And now for the list of characters from the last two movies not in the book: Legolas (though they mention in passing a couple times “thranduil’s son”, Tauriel, Alfrid (why?), Azog (he died in the battle I that he supposedly survived), Radaghast (he was mentioned in the LOTR books), Frodo (just fan-service), Galadriel, and Saruman…. A lot of stuff that wasn’t in the book was taken from the LOTR appendices. Ok, for the positives… the acting is for the most part great. Martin Freeman is pretty much perfect as Bilbo. I don’t think I could have picked anyone better (except for if the original actor had been 30 years younger to have been able to play him)… The dwarves are given a lot more personality than in the book. While reading, you could be confused about who was who. Bard had more of a character than what we read in the book and that actor (Luke Evans) elevates any movie he is in. And Smaug’s design was superb. Probably the best dragon model at the time. And regardless of the CGI, the cinematography is still usually very pretty.
Ok, I think I’m done. Long, rambley, and perhaps unnecessary but I thought I’d weigh in lol. Regardless of anything else, you’re reactions were great and I’m curious how much you will end up crying in the finale 👀 P.S. - listen to the credits of the final movie when it plays - it’s beautiful and wraps up the entire journey nicely.

Bombur ran faster than all of them because the actor is actually built like Sean Astin was in LOTR and is a runner. The actors had to wear their heavy Dwarven boots even when they aren't in frame, the actor because of the prosthetics and fat suit couldn't run in the heavy boots and made a bet with Peter Jackson that he would outrun them all if he was allowed to wear his sneakers. Peter Jackson agreed and the actor proceeded to outrun them all, the looks of surprise on the others is genuine as that's a one take shot, he is outrunning them wearing about 100lb or more of weight.
The voice of Smaug and The Necromancer/Sauron is the same person, Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict also did the motion capture for Smaug, slithering around on the floor in a mocap suit with a gopro on his face capturing his expressions, doing the movement, expressions and voice at the same time. As the Necromancer he spoke the Black Speach backwards and it was then played forwards which gave it a distorted sound fitting with Sauron's form at this point.
Other comments are correct that Legolas was not in the Hobbit, but he is Thranduil's son so he would have been there, Tolkien just hadn't come up with Legolas when he wrote The Hobbit.
Lee Pace does play Thranduil very well, Thranduil is not like Elrond and Galadriel, he cares not about the world and only cared about defending his own lands. He is more selfish, only fighting Sauron in the War of the Ring when they attacked his realm. He also remained in Middle Earth along with the Silvan Elves when the elves of Lorian and Rivendell left for the Undying Lands.
The rapids scene was filmed in an actual rapids with specially built weighted barrels that took forever to get right as they had to make sure the barrels stayed upright not drowning anyone, they fastened gopros to the barrels to get POV shots.
Also practical shot was the fish being dumped on them, using barrels with cut outs for the camera and real fish. It was the actors' least favorite scene because it had to be done again and again, the smell was unbearable.

Many viewers doesn't like Tranduil, however his realm is unlike the rest of the elven kingdom. His kingdom is the only Elven realm to never be protected by the power of the rings and yet he persevered to protect his lands.
He was tormented by the elven lives lost during the war of the last alliance where the entire army of his kingdom was almost wiped out in the dead marshes where he lost his father and his friends.
Most people also doesn't realize that there are also Vampires and Werewolves in this world aside from the race Beorn.

54:00 .. Dragon is not related to Sauron..There is a huge lore that didnt be shown us at this film.. The Dragons (Smaug is almost smallest one) is servant of Morgoth.. Just like Balrogs (yes there were Balrog armies once) Remember what Gandalf's said when he met the Balrog.. "You cannot pass.. Balrog of Morgoth..Also at this film, Galadriel called Sauron servant of Morgoth. Morgoth is one of the 13 god (Valar) ... There are thousands of thausand servants for these 13 gods.. (Valar)... Servant of gods are called Maiar (Maiar is a plural word, its singular form is Maia.)... Maiar are like half gods / servant of gods or angelic creatures... For example Gandalf, Sauron, Balrog, Eagles, Saruman, Radagast, Blue wizards etc are Maiar.. (Half gods/ angelic creatures) .. So Dragons, Balrogs, Sauron etc are servant of Evil god Morgoth (Melkor)... Even Sauron is not Melkor's first (or greatest commander).. The Greatest commander of Melkor was Gothmog ( Leader and The first and ancestor of the Balrogs.. He is a Balrog as well but biggest oneI)... Gothmog was the most clever, the greatest military genius of all creatures ( elves, maia's, dworfs etc..) He never lost a battle, including the Battle of Gondolin, where he died and lost many Balrogs. He was such a great genius and such a powerful being that he won even the battle in which he died, with the plans he made beforehand, and destroyed countless superior elves. Those elves who they died in that battle are like a godly power compare to Elrond, Galadriel etc...
So Gothmog was the greatest commander of Morgoth (Melkor).. So what about the second commander of Morgoth?... Glaurung.. Come and meet the Leader and the first and ancestor of the dragons.. The Glaurung has fire power that it could even melt the mountains.. Also He has magical powers.. He could manipulate you with his magic, he could make you do whatever he wanted. He could show you illusions that weren't real. He could curse you and your descendants...And He can read your mind just like his heir Smaug.. He was Morgoth's second commander...
And Sauron was the Third commander but You didnt think that He is the weakest..All of Sauron's attributes and powers have not been fully revealed to us in these two trilogies.. But just know this.. Sauron, Gandalf, Saruman etc are the same kin... (maia) angelic creatures and They were friends when they didnt came the world (in nothingness).. Sauron's real name (Maia name) is Mairon... Gandalf's maia name is Olorin... The name "Sauron" actually means an insult.. Because of this, Sauron didnt use this name to himself.."The Sauron" name is given him by the elves.. Sorry for long comment but you wont see nothing about this info at the films..So this is not spoiler :D
