- The City of Crookston, Minnesota, is located in the Red River Valley of the North. The birth of the city in 1872 from the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad is featured, along with some of its early businesses. The growth of the city is an excellent example of how railroads took over for steamboats as the primary transportation for US fur trade and commercial goods, and the resultant competition between railroads for domination of the industry.
The construction of its famous Palace Hotel began in 1891. Sadly, after falling into disrepair, the hotel was torn down in 2010. See views of Crookston and the hotel through the years, and demolition video.

I enjoyed your video of Crookston's Palace Hotel. My Grandfather was born in Monticello and later moved to Beltrami, Minnesota. (City, not the County) In the summer, they couldn't see Crookston 18 miles away. But in the winter at 20 below, there it was on the horizon. The cold winter air bent the light rays making Crookston visible. And my Grandfather may have very well visited the Palace Hotel in its prime.
Great video. An interesting note: If one goes to Google Street View and "virtually walks" down 2nd and Main, suddenly, there is a frame where the building is still standing. Take a few steps forward, and it is gone. Though I am far from Minnesota, I often follow your videos on Google Maps and look for the landmarks. This one was great fun. Keep up the great work. Always fascinating.
Good idea, Andrew. Thanks.
I noticed that too, it was a "ghostly" moment!
Fantastic video!!
A great tribute, thank you!
Well done, Sir. Thank you.
I'm originally from Crookston and I call it the tear down city. They like to tear down the beautiful old buildings and it makes me sad that they do that.
How sad to see that building crumble
It was the County that tore it down, they owned it due to tax forfeiture. The City Administrator with help from his relative in St. Paul helped avoid the required historic survey of the building to expedite the County's plans. It was the County that let it worsen. They could have easily put a roof on it and sold it before roof leaking caused it to mold. We tried hard to save it, even hiring an attorney, but the old boy network in Crookston had made the decision already, even tossing a brick down to make sure the public believed it had to go. The wind broke out some window glass as well, but shouldn't the County have boarded it up? So very wasteful. The cost of tearing it down was around $300,000. The key lesson learned: ownership is everything. We had worked with the previous owner to take ownership, but we were not wealthy enough to pay the back taxes, nor was he.
Gotcha. I feel the same way, we need to save more, but it always comes down to money.
I could never live in such a backwards, backwoods town that would destroy something so beautiful.
I think it's a shame they say they can't save it. Yet the crane trying to destroy it having such a tough time. I think people are lazy. Just my 2 cents
Yes, the brick was in good shape.
Sad
