  • As you drive along Interstate 94 through Fergus Falls, if you look closely, you will notice three tall spires along the skyline. Do you wonder what is there? These three spires represent the corners of the old Fergus Falls Insane Asylum, which housed thousands of patients from 1890 through 2007. This massive brick complex was a community within a community. To care for and treat thousands of patients, it needed doctors, nurses, administrators, kitchens, sleeping quarters, and a laundry. It even had its own power plant and specialized hospitals. Since the complex closed in 2007, various uses have been found for some of the remaining brick buildings. Learn more about this fascinating complex, and see what it looked like in 2023.

I have personally been in and around the Buildings. Ive seen with my own eyes the places and things people imagine in the tunnels and off limits areas. Along with stories from relatives who worked there over many decades. Its a fascinating place that had a purpose but many were abused.

It is so nice when you are using the map and the pointer. Also very helpful when you use the black lines for the rails placement.

They used to hold a haunted house here around Halloween. Unfortunately, the state of disrepair and black mold have made this place too dangerous to enter according to the city council. A number of Hollywood productions wanted to film here but were denied by the city council. Imagine a season of American horror story set here!

This is fantastic, I just visited the site in Fergus Falls. I hope this can be reused as mixed income, mixed use housing and connected to the downtown.

Looks like big money to maintain, repair. I wouldn't want the heat bill either! Thanks for the tour.

Where are the construction photos? Modern photography dates back at least to the 1820's. Who built these stone masterpieces? Comes back to the inherited history explanation. Inmates were the cultural lovers or those whose property was stolen? Thank you.

"Welcome to the Fergus Falls Insane Asylum
    Such a lovely place
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
"Relax," said the night man, "We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

Parts of this property have been reused. Its a big place. The tunnels from the building I work in to the main building have been closed off but its were we go for tornados. Both my grandparents worked and retired from there. When you see the photos of the interactions between the community and the patients the images of the cages and bars become a little less realistic.

Last year (when this video was taken) they were blocking the windows closest to the ground. No other construction has happened since.

On the up side there will be a car show August 4 there .that I a lot of people turn out for every year 😊

Rather grim, no? I suppose the funereal music doesn't liven things up much, but that said, it's all very impressive. Sound job on your part!
