I always wanted the original House of the Dead on the Dreamcast, it would have been nice if they'd released it with House of the Dead 2 as a doublepack.
@The Furthest Man From Home so... you still can emulate it... that's a weak excuse... Just rip the Saturn or Arcade version and make it compatible with the Wii... Cost a little more time but still possible!
The Dreamcast version of House of the Dead 2 was supposed to include the first game as an unlockable extra, but they ran out of time to add it. Had they done that they might still have a build of the source code.
I just noticed the Taikenban has a more detailed texture on the zombies and the answer to the different color scheme may be because they were trying to make it as exact as the Arcade For example the Kenfis(zombie dogs) are colored exactly like their arcade counterparts And another interesting sidenote regarding graphics is Rogan's car In the Taikenban version it has a dark tint on the front windshield and the rest of the windows much like the Arcade version but the final version completely took it out I think Sega really tried making the port as exact as the Arcade version but soon gave up and rushed with a really bad port I mean in terns of graphics they should've given the PC version a little bit more time and make it more like what they were aiming in the Taikenban version but they literally just copy pasted the Saturn port sadly Nice video mate 👍 very informative
thanks for comparing the different versions. very interesting! hotd was such a big influence in my early videogaming-years. same with virtua cop, which you already showed up recently. segas golden ages i guess.
Thanks for watching. I've always been a fan of House of the Dead. Such a cool game. I'm still trying to get the game to run without textures like on the screen shot I've used for the title card. Unfortunately the untextured area only shows during the rolling demo then cuts off very quickly.
I remember going into my Virgin Megastores and picking up a copy of house of the dead and the light gun took it home and was so excited .....was majorly disappointed on how the graphics were ...thankfully did play better then it looked but still felt a better port could have been done. Speaking of which shame we never got a home console port that was arcade perfect.
In 4:17 he turned green on the ladder like the green ghoul that jumps on your face! The game probably tried to load from the previous polygon routine to load the next character and it delayed to change the figure i think!
One thing the beta has is unfiltered voice files. The title screen is the magicians voice without the pitch change. If you play through the whole thing the hangedman is G's VA and the computer voices are Sophies VA with out the filters. The magician is voiced by Rogan but in a flat tone to try and simulate a machine I'm guessing.
That's right. I'm trying to find the files on the disc so I can replace them with other voice samples. I'm also wondering if it's possible to replace the textures with better ones.
They were cobbling this thing together even until the eleventh hour... The fact that they got a working game out A MONTH AFTER this beta is just mind boggling.
I think the team behind this did an amazing job. House of the Dead plays great on the Saturn. It's just a shame it looks poor thanks to those textures.

I noticed the Taikenban build has the direct arcade music from stage 1. It sounds really good. I tried looking for the other in-game music by hacking the ISO without much luck. :\
in the beta, seems that there was a slow memory corruption going on. typical of C programs that have to load and dispose bitmaps fast and often. The pointers often "walk" (due to some mishandling) and you end up loading a texture to the wrong spot or even crossing a boundary and bleeding into other textures or even geometry data
@@RetroCore That's what usually happen - otherwise, there would be random crashes and game corruption over time. It's tricky because sometimes it only happen after hours and hours of playing. C is a powerful language, but quite tricky to work.
05:06 Actually that's a missing texture because the character is displayed before the texture is loaded from the CD, probably a bug in the beta version. It can also be a sign that the CD drive gets weaker : my first Saturn eventually couldn't manage to load any texture like that. Yes, textures are loaded on the fly from the CD in this game, and still they had to stop the gameplay to load more data in the middle of the levels… They should have used a cartridge RAM.
Also they could create i believe for sony's VR and not only remastered versions like the crash trilogy with all the games in one sweet bundle.Or all the sega rail shooters from virtual cop to jurasic park, ocean hunter, confidential mission etc with house of the dead as well!
@Stefano Pavone I hope they kept the gore intact. And hopefully we will get a pc port too cause hod 4 never got ported to pc. So I think they wont port hod1 and 2 remake on pc either.
I would like a video saying why you love this game i always find it interesting to see how passionate a person is and their view (unless you have a video already,)
I've probably mentioned this in the Battle of the Ports House of the Dead video. I feel this is the best of the series because it actually takes place inside a haunted house setting. It has that creepy atmosphere that the others lack. It also has a great soundtrack. It's just a shame we never got a high quality home port. I mean, the Saturn version plays really well but it does look pretty bad.
A family member of mine had the Saturn port. For as jank as the graphics were, it was my exposure to the first game and I loved it! Shame Sega never found a way to port the first to dreamcast, kinda funny because the Xbox port of HOTD3 had HOTD2 as a bonus.
@@RetroCore i don't really know. but probably because it looks better (and easier to read) in better resolution than it is on Saturn. ps: oh yes it also includes researcher and sophie as well! Just remembered the details lol
And also there are a lot of graphical corruptions into wireframes here and there in split second in the beta version on enemies and allies texture models i noticed this in i think 9:15 and 5:20...maybe but you should check them out mark!

While some colors look good on Taikenban version, the final build is more faithful to the arcade in terms of color. Also the skins of civilians and humans look dead on the Taikenban version. While the final build did have more lively skin, the dead civilians you find here and there still used the old dead looking skin textures. Also even the final build had botched hit detection on Saturn. They did fix it in pc port but I wonder if it was really due to saturns hardware or they coudlnt get the hit detection right due to time constraints?
I never had an issue with hit detection on the Saturn game. I have only ever played the Japanese version mind you. Maybe it was fixed for that release?
