Gday, I’m not one for changing originality and I’d leave it as it is, just enjoy what all the old fellas had to put with everyday, we really are spoilt with the new vehicles mate, Cheers…
Replace the 3B (3.4L indirect injection) with a 15BF (4.1L direct injection). Will make a world of difference and the 15BF will bolt in place with some basic plumbing and a sump mod to clear the drivetrain. 15BF is a beast with a turbo added, and has a gear driven power steering pump ready for the 60/70 power steering mods.
I have a 1984 BJ42 too. Pulled the 3B out swaped with a 13B-T and hooked a boost controller. All the power issues are gone. Runs like a dream. Few years back I had a 1984 FJ40 which I swaped from a 2F to 1HZ hooked to a a H151 and you might not believe me, apart from the engine sound 13B-T runs much better and and the power delivery is extremely linear as well. compared to the 1HZ. Now planning to up grade the turbo charger from CT26 to a slightly more efficient Garrett option. As far as the power steering goes(don't know the aussie laws) but its an easy and simple swap from manual to power steering. Yes space is an issue. You have to learn to live around it.
That sounds like quite the project! Swapping out the 3B for a 13B-T and upgrading the turbocharger is sure to give your BJ42 a significant boost in performance. It's interesting to hear your comparison between the 13B-T and the 1HZ, especially considering the power delivery and overall performance. As for the power steering upgrade, you're right that it can make a big difference in driving comfort, and it's great that it's a relatively straightforward swap. Thanks for sharing your experience and plans for your BJ42!
I had one of these. same engine but after market turbo. I think it was 60 series power steering and a 5 speed gearbox. I feel your pain. now that I've sold it I miss it sometimes. 😢
Toyota used the same PS box in the Toyoace and Dyna Trucks as in the LX version. The chassis number is an LY211, you can easily verify this online. I bought one and rebuilt it with a rebuilt kit and it’s about to go into my 83 BJ42. Great vehicles 😊
The only thing I would change on the Old Yella is the owner - it's should be me 😂What a great car and a classic dream for most of us, well built mate 👍🏼
Hi I used to own a Bj42 LX same colour as yours with power steer and no air conditioner. If i ever owned one again i would definitely fit air con and a Turbo and maybe do something to make it quieter and more easier on my old body. I loved mine and your one looks great. Cheers
I would just work through your list of hates and try to address each one, but try and keep it 40 series or at least traditional LC (I.e. only 1 gen of LC up). So upgrade the 3B to a 13BT or 12H-T, and an appropriate 5 spd. Spend some money on suspension (shocks and maybe some airbags) to reduce the harshness. Space, well there isnt much to do that you haven't done already. AC and PS can both be addressed with the power upgrade and you could go engine powered or even electric... I don't think you "need" to do all this though, you could just fix one (suspension) or four (power, ride, AC, PS) and just enjoy the truck for what it is. Space is always gonna be limited, but maybe you need to look at it the other way and justify why you "need" everything you are trying to bring. When I owned my Feroza I went through the process of looking at everything I put in it and justifying why it had to go in. Reduced my "stuff" by a significant amount, which was good for the next few trips until it spat another head gasket and I finally got sick of fixing it. Bought an FJ and never looked back. Once my young fella gets a bit bigger and the FJ gets a bit older I may come up the hill to see you about a stretch and remodel to make it a little different.
Love everything about this shorty! bring it out to some the 40 series qld club meets so we can all appreciate it in person! Some of those things you hate about it arnt hard to change but not essential. If it was me modifying that rig i'd chase down factory powersteering box, ps pump and ac for the 3b, chuck a new reproduction knee freezer in it, chuck 3.7 diff ratios in it, get some old man emu suspension and maybe a turbo and away you go!
Used to have BJ40 (1984 with "B" 3,0 liter)....later engine swap (13B-T) + air con + power steering + front disc brake....then someone knocks on the window and buys on the spot...
Obviously an engine upgrade Im putting a 1uzfe in mine. But a 1hdfte for the win. Westralia parabolic leaf springs off a 70 series, if its a late model very little mods needed I believe and that will change your world.
3B, 90hp, luxury mate. Try getting around in a BJ with the B motor🤣, then you'll know about not being able to pull the skin off a rice pudding. Love mine and such a magnet for people wanting to us arn about 'em...
Hi mate turbo /aircon /power steering install a lot off the later bj42 come out with aircon and power steering and we’re turbo unless it’s a bj40 and they didn’t have any off the modcons all best
Power steer it also air con it doesn’t reduce much power ... it’s an under powered motor you will upgrade it with time ... it’s the best car on the planet !!!😎
Turbo it. That thing can take the boost. Buy a 1984 and you're going to get a 5 speed and power steering. You're all set. PS the AC is the removable top.
I'd build it into a 80 - you know, new body, chassis and drive gear. I'd use the interior of the 80 or better still the 200 if it will fit. It must have AC and the noise must be well controlled. I rode in the much more comfortable long wheel base 40 many years ago and I ejected two vertebrae like slingshots and that was driving down the driveway. 40 series are RELIABLE but so is a length of train track. It's a museum piece, not a tourer, rock crawler or hauler. - Just wanted to get a comment in for the YT algo and a laugh - hope you take it as intended! :)
All I can say is you bought it, My brother had a petrol one for years had great power the best 4wd Ive driven on the beach would go anywhere in the 70s and 80s up DI and Fraser, but a pig rotting thing, but miles better than my dads SWB landy
If you want to fix these issues, then get a 13bt or 12ht engine and that will get you some power, and then you can get power steering and ac. invest in some good suspension, and except thats its a shorty and you'll never have much space.
2 1/2 out the five are all taken care of with an engine up grade power steer 1/2 ac and power but I guess you would have to mod the engine bay to fit a new one in and in doing so the front suspension to take the weight of new motor so I guess that would be 31/2 out 5 with engine change but other than that it's mint if you wanna give it away I'll take it as is
Hey Ruben to be honest just leave her the way she is and take her on short runs keep her for ever like the wife and build another with all the mod-cons,,
Had a BJ42 LX had PS and an AC knee rattler, one of the best 4wd I’ve owned, you could go down the motor upgrade but keep it Toyota please don’t do the v8.
drop in a warm holden 308 matched up to a turbo 400 auto with power steering and aircon same set up as a 76 statesman deville you will get 400'000 trouble free kms old school.
Buy a 45 Troopy if you're looking for space instead of saying rubbish to get some views... Buy an FJ if you are looking for power, 135hp for the last versions it was quite a lot at that time Buy a real 42, there is a power steering compare to the 40 version, you are note a real expert of this car. The only thing i hate about it is the fact that i dont own it
Gday, I’m not one for changing originality and I’d leave it as it is, just enjoy what all the old fellas had to put with everyday, we really are spoilt with the new vehicles mate, Cheers…
Cheers Matty.
Yeah I agree - something cool about going back in time
Although I should add that in restoring my BJ42 with a 3B the one thing I did upgrade was power steering, but kept the rest stock.

All adds to the character of it!!
Would definitely put a 12HT in the old girl for all that power you need and more
Hi I used to own a Bj42 LX same colour as yours with power steer and no air conditioner. If i ever owned one again i would definitely fit air con and a Turbo and maybe do something to make it quieter and more easier on my old body. I loved mine and your one looks great. Cheers
Thanks for sharing. Go for it, mate! Bring back the good 'ol days! Cheers
We've got one in our club here in NZ,. 350 Chevy powered,. It looks standard untill you start. It's a beast
Sounds like a cracker of a car Brett!

whistle and soot Turbo setup👌🏾👌🏾
Obviously an engine upgrade

Westralia parabolic leaf springs off a 70 series, if its a late model very little mods needed I believe and that will change your world.
Do a mega build new motor, diffs, suspension change seats out and install a vintage air system
Small turbo no more than 12-15 psi safe tune then take it on a trip with the farm truck, shorty, and one of jockos Hilux’s
Love these rigs ! , just replace the 3B with a 13BT with all the fruit , AC , Power steer ect and BINGO problems solved ! 😎👍🍻🇦🇺
I got 76 series , one day my dream I have bj45 landcruiser.
Drop the 12HT will fixed ya power aircon and power steering issue
3B, 90hp, luxury mate. Try getting around in a BJ with the B motor🤣, then you'll know about not being able to pull the skin off a rice pudding. Love mine and such a magnet for people wanting to us arn about 'em...
Hi mate turbo /aircon /power steering install a lot off the later bj42 come out with aircon and power steering and we’re turbo unless it’s a bj40 and they didn’t have any off the modcons all best
I guess I’m lucky. My 1982 BJ42 has both a/c and p/s. Yes, the 3B is a tad slow but that’s the cool part.
That is true! Part of the old charm. :)
1st world problem's Reuben. Don't change it, don't modify it!
Just enjoy it for what it is old mate
That's the plan!
My 3B new has power? Why don’t you just modified it using LN106 power steering?
Looks great as is. One thing that provokes my OCD is you must respray the High Lift Jack to match the yellow of vehicle. :)
haha.. You never know! It may happen.
Power steer it also air con it doesn’t reduce much power ... it’s an under powered motor you will upgrade it with time ... it’s the best car on the planet !!!😎

Sounds like great memories Craig. cheers
@@dirtymuddyweekends yes could tow our boat up thought the blows at DI on hot day easy
Put a 200 series V8 into it
I'm happy to swap my 2F motor for yours if you want a slight power increase.
If you want to fix these issues, then get a 13bt or 12ht engine and that will get you some power, and then you can get power steering and ac. invest in some good suspension, and except thats its a shorty and you'll never have much space.
Thanks for watching, Alex! 🍻
Old school rig but it rocks the 4wheeler club and expensive to own mate.
Nothing shes perfect. So in love....
Me too! it is a little beauty.
Ls motor,on coil sprung cut down 80 or nissan chassis with aircon ,simple mate
2 1/2 out the five are all taken care of with an engine up grade power steer 1/2 ac and power but I guess you would have to mod the engine bay to fit a new one in and in doing so the front suspension to take the weight of new motor so I guess that would be 31/2 out 5 with engine change but other than that it's mint if you wanna give it away I'll take it as is
Yeah lots of upgrades can be done which is pretty great. Still love it as is though!
Hey Ruben
to be honest just leave her the way she is and take her on short runs keep her for ever like the wife and build another with all the mod-cons,,
Not a bad idea at all. I really do love this thing. It is a little beauty.
Nice motor mate 👍
Cheers, mate!
3b? Couldnt be slower than my landy 2.25?
great Ruben you are the best
🍻
If I had it and could afford to do it I’d love to put a turbo in it or engine swap it
That would be a great conversion Jason.
Haha yeah
Build like patriot campers did with the swap of all running gear and motor
Had a BJ42 LX had PS and an AC knee rattler, one of the best 4wd I’ve owned, you could go down the motor upgrade but keep it Toyota please don’t do the v8.
Staying as is for now Matthew. It's a ripper of a car. - Cheers
LS it and electric power steer
Petrol for the win
Sounds like a 15BFT is in your future!!!!!!
LS it and electric power steer
the name on the rego papers.
haha
What would I change 🤔 drop in a LS with auto p/s and a/c, the limited space isn't an issue enough room for a man and his dog 😎
Don't think so mate. Quite like the original charm to be honest.
LS swap straight up 👌🏽😅
You should 1KD swap it
Just get it dirty bro...
Problem solved sell it to me, No Air not so much problem in Melbourne 😎
haha
Aircon and turbo it
drop in a warm holden 308 matched up to a turbo 400 auto with power steering and aircon same set up as a 76 statesman deville you will get 400'000 trouble free kms old school.
If you had more power you would bloody break it.
Buy a 45 Troopy if you're looking for space instead of saying rubbish to get some views...
Buy an FJ if you are looking for power, 135hp for the last versions it was quite a lot at that time
Buy a real 42, there is a power steering compare to the 40 version, you are note a real expert of this car.
At least the only thing to change on this car is the driver...
I would make me the owner instead of you lol
haha
Not my kind of car but leave as is.
Thanks for watching John :)
Put a 200 series V8 into it
